Replace shell of key and how to get old transponder chip?

I have to replace one of my keys. Last time I paid 150 to have a new one made. My 2nd one broke at the same place, right where the screw is holding the actual key.

I wanted to buy this off ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-H...ht_1901wt_1165

And transfer all the interior components and the just get the key cut at a Locksmith.

Looking at the original, on the iniside there is a rectangular are that has the chip I think. How do I remove it and transfer to the new one?

Thanks.

I used a razor knife and cut through the side and top of the little plastic holder and was able to get the chip out that way. It's a very small little rectangle chip inside that little plastic box.

i didnt even cut the rectangle thing when i took mine out to do the switchblade key. There is a cover on it that is held on by a slot, you can see it on the side of the rectangle "box". pry the cover off and then youll see the transponder inside. its just held in with a little bit of glue, I just used a small flat head and started to pry the transponder out slowly.

Better to slice open the shell as the tight fit may cause undue stress on the chip when trying to extract. I bought a shell off ebay (around ten bucks) and had the key cut at Ace Hardware for another $10. You wouldn't believe the ridiculous prices I heard prior just to cut the metal.

Total expense $20.00!!!

The only problem is... I only have one key right now. I need a spare key. Wouldn't mind a switchblade key but they seem so damn big.

How did you get the key laser cut at ace hardware, they only cut keys they don't laser etch the key like it's supposed too...

My Honda dealership cut mine for free. Buy the switchblade key off eBay for $20 you'll love how it looks.

Laser etching means using a laser to burn an image onto the surface of the metal. You'll see this on craftsman sockets nowadays. I don't see any etching on my original key.

Laser cut suggests that the groves of the key are cut by laser, but it's not really true. The keys are cut like this...

Send me a link for a good switchblade key... I understand they are not all the same quality.

Thanks for the information. Does the chip need to contact the metal of the key? How does the chip get its power?

It's weird that some Ace hardware won't do it and some will. I was told to expect that by the person that referred me. $15 at the dealer is not bad. Around here, the dealers would rape me.
