Extended Warranty - help me decide

Hard to believe I’m nipping at the heals of the 36k “no more warranty for you” mark. I checked with the dealer and I can extend the Honda factory warranty to 7 year/100k for around $1600.

As this is the first time I have ever owned a new car that had warranty – I’m trying to decide what to do – please provide advice.

I purchased the Honda because of its repetition of lasting forever if maintained. My fear is, from previous experience with other manufactures, that ‘things’ may start go to wrong. In my mind, I can justify the expense with “if one major thing goes wrong, it will be worth it”.

Your thoughts…

Although we wouldn't bother with it, I think they can be a great idea for others!

Check the fine print though.... there's some that cover things in an odd way. What's the deductable?

For us, not paying labor, none of them are really worth it.

also, try to negotiate the price on the warranty. i was originally quoted $1200 for the 6yr/100k honda care warranty (no deductible, all the good stuff...) after i turned them down, they came back with an offer of i think $900 for the same exact package. i still didn't purchase it though since i tend to trade my car in way too often!

Q: Extended Warranty

That $1600 price s/b more like $1000; might make your decision a little easier...

Are you mechanically inclined or do you like working on your own car? If so, I wouldn't recommend the warranty. If a car gets too expensive for me to fix, I'll buy another one, & not one from the mfg that just gave out on me.

I haven't considered buying one at any time. That's another reason why I try to keep everything in good shape mechanically. Of course sometimes, things break or wear out.

According to the business manager at the Honda dealership that I bought the car from – it’s an extension of the current warranty that is on my car now. No deductible.

As far as fixing the car myself – I have no interest doing that at all.

think about 3rd party

you might want to think about buying the warranty from a 3rd party, essentially the same people the dealership buy it from.
the dealerhsip just markts it up a little bit.
research it online.
ill say this, depending on your car, it might be well worth it to get the warranty for say the navigation system on the car.

volvo s80, had 34000 miles on it, bought extended warranty from a 3rd party for 1800. extended the warranty to 100 k 5 more years
within 3 weeks 6 airflow sensors on the car gave out, and were replaced under the new warranty. total bill that we would have had to pay 2100.

case in point warranty works if you have a car that charges you loads of money for stuff it has under the hood.

Rumor has it that the Honda warranty if NOT used can be sold back at the end of a time frame.... I don't know if it's the whole warranty period or just a specific time frame.... this may help with a decision...... Ask about it!

My dealer offered me the Honda Car extended warranty for alot more than I purchased it for at Curry Honda.

Take a look at this link:

I paid less than 1000 bucks for the warranty for my Accord....

avoid third party warranties no matter what. repairs paid by them mean you may easily end up with used, or cheap aftermarket parts, if the cover the specific failure at all. go with hondacare if anything.

I agree 100 percent. No, make that 1,000 percent.

I've know too many people who have been hosed by 3rd party warranty companies - including my wife, before she was my wife. Problems with deductables; not covering items; long waiting periods to get work approved; etc. Also, some companies are in trouble - Warranty Gold is the best example.

Same here. I think we paid around $900 for the 99 Accord. I need to ask my wife, she'll know for sure.

That is my understanding also.

In a related story, my wife's friend transferred the extended Honda warranty from her Prelude to her Accord. I don't know all the details as I didn't see the paperwork, but the extended warranty is still on her Accord.

Definitely.

The local Honda dealers varied considerably in the price they wanted to charge for the warranty. Shop around and you'll get the best price.
