No V6 for 2018 Accord. No word on CVT

Audi, MB, VW, Ford, GM, and my Volvo S60 all do pretty well with an I4 turbo. Driven to match a V6 performance, you can kiss all of those precious MPGs goodbye.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see how Honda executes. If Honda detunes the 300-hp Civic Type-R engine, it should still provide plenty of power. That’s stock. For those willing to pay for modifications, I’m confident we will see 400+hp Accords in the not so distant future. With less weight over the front wheels it should handle better. I will be curious to learn about real life fuel economy. I suppose it will reward those who drive easily with better fuel economy and punish those who drive hard with worse fuel economy. Will it require premium fuel? For the Accord enthusiasts, let’s hope a 6MT is offered with the 2.0T. Even with some turbo lag that combo could work. Time will tell.

Yuck. What a terrible idea. A real gamble for Honda, too. People that buy cars with a v6 do so not primarily for the power, but because they think four-bangers are loud and rough. A spec-sheet or dynograph demonstrating that a turbo-four is comparable to a v6, if that is possible, will not sway these buyers.

Engineering progress marches on. You can't get a NA car from Mercedes, BMW, Audi, or Volvo, and many other manufacturers put turbos in their cars too. To me, it is not whether a car has turbos, it is how those engines are executed. Power, response, NVH, reliability, and efficiency are what is important to me, not whether the car is boosted or not. Nissan had a powerful NA V6 engine that was very rough. I wouldn't, and didn't, buy that car.

If Honda executes a 2.0 turbo well, and I expect they will, I have no problem with it.

IMO the only thing worse than losing Honda's V6 engine would be to also drop their AT and pair a top-trim Accord (e.g. Touring) with a 4 cyl. turbo & a CVT.

If that happens sound a death knell for the Accord.

If I'm not mistaken, where manufacturers are adding turbos to their cars, they're reducing the engine displacement and maintaining the cylinder count. If Honda wanted to make a 2.8L v6 with a turbo, I'd be all for that. I'm not against progress. I just can't envision a reality where a turbo-four is any kind of replacement for a normally-aspirated-six, especially in the eyes of the average non-enthusiast consumer.

So who is thinking about picking up a '17 V6 before they're gone? I'm considering trading my '14 EX-L V6 for a '17 Touring.

I purchased a 2016 Touring Accord on 12/31/15. It's a great car, the best Accord I've owned (6 since 1988 & 4 were V6).

My Accord is nearing 13K miles and I'm tempted to refresh it for a 17'.

I'm going to wait & see what the 10th gen. Accords have to offer and should be able to obtain a good price/trade deal for a leftover 17' V6 if I decide to pursue it.

BTW chris322, I traded a 13' Touring Accord for the 16'. The 13' was a very nice car, but the 16' is even better.

I don't know about you, but most of the people that I know have no idea how many cylinders their engine has. None. Zero. It boggles the mind, but... what I am saying is - people will keep buying Accords just because they are Accords. They will not care if there is a turbo or not; well, actually - sales guys will likely sell it as a feature and I promise you that everyone will like hearing they have a turbo under the hood. I mean turbos are cool, right?

Now - before someone says that yes turbos are cool indeed, I am not arguing that. Just that most people have zero clue and could care less.

This is a matter of execution, if they implement CTR power levels, it will obviously be stronger, but peakier, than the V6. So to get more linear power, they'll probably have to use a smaller turbo to reduce spool time among other things, but obviously that reduces peak power.

Then the next question is, if they really get rid of the accord V6, what are Acura products going to use, since all of Honda's V6 products are still J series, which has been in production for 20 years. It's a good engine but dated on features.

The turbo 14 will probably require premium fuel or, like Acura, they will recommend premium. I think my V6 will soon acquire additional value.
