Key Stuck in ON I, can't remove

I have a '94 Accord EX. Once in a blue moon I would have to really wiggle the key to get it to go from the off position into where I could start the car. But, very rare.

Last night, however, the opposite: I cannot get the key out of the ignition! It won't go past ON I, but it will start. When I try to push the key in and turn it back really hard, I can hear a clicking near the shifter, but I have tried putting it back in neutral and even just shaking it around while trying to pull the key out.

How can I get this key out of there? I have another key but I can't try it to see if it helps since the current one is stuck!

Thanks for any help. I go back to school in three days and I can't just leave this sitting around with the keys hanging in the ignition, heh.

is the steering wheel locked? try pulling the steering wheel towards the left and push in and pull out of the ignition. if thats not the case try wiggling the wheel and your keys to see if you can get it out.

The steering wheel isn't locked. I tried wiggling it by turning the wheel and even trying to move the whole column up and down using the adjusting lever thing. Very weird.

can you even start the car up? if its an auto is it in park?

well, if its an automatic, there is some sort of soleniod to keep you from truning the car off with it in gear. Sounds like a failure with that. I know some cars have a manual release next to the gear shifter, under a small cover that has to be pryed off... You might pm princess to see if she has any thing on this - I think its calles shift interlock

Yep it's in park and an auto. I can start it. I actually just got back from driving it around the block. It was extremely hard to get it out of park into reverse (I had to force it), but I drove and went through the gears and got it back into park and got the key out. I'll try using the other key from now on and monitor what's going on. I sometimes unlock my trunk with the key and use it to lift the trunk, I'm sure I just bent it along the way or something. I just hope the difficulty of getting it out of park had to do with the ignition switch and isn't something else.

sounds like either worn out ignition switch or worn out key to me.....

As a 1996 Accord owner with a failed ignition switch I say switch as well. Sometimes the tumblers inside break, and you'd be surprised how much faster the car starts with a new switch!

New switch with wiring is about 190 at th dealer. It's not available as an after-market part to my knowledge.

I kinda agree with Accordlover. It could be the switch. I had the "pleasure" of replace the switch about two weeks ago by the stealership. But I owuld goahead and replace the whole unit. Only problem with that is you would have one set of keys to open the door and another set to start the car.

My brother drives a 92 accord, and he got the key stuck in there and has yet to take the key out or get an new switch. They has been in there for about a year now and no one has yet to do anything. But i guess it doesnt matter because the car has 250,000 miles and still goin strong. Good thing you got your key out though.

I had a 97 Odyssey that had similar problems. There was a recall on the ignition switch. After the recall was performed, I had no problems.

I had an Olds Cutlass many years ago with a similar situation. I had a lot of trouble turning the key to start the car, with a lot of jiggling involved. It finally got to a point where I could no longer do it and had to get the car towed to the dealership where they replaced the ignition switch. I was advised at the time that this was strictly a dealership item (as mentioned by one of the previous posters). Once replaced, I never had another problem with it.
