I just noticed there are marks on the OEM Honda oil filters to help you determine how tight the filter should be.

There are triangles (circled in yellow) on the filter can. Note what group of triangles is seen when it touches the block, then continue tightening until the third subsequent group comes up in the same spot. That's it.

I found this is "hand tight, plus a little".

I always go by the WIX engine oil filter instuctions. When the oil filter rubber gasket just touches the engine block go another 3/4 of a turn. That's it. I have been using this technique for 30 years now on all types of oil filters from From, OEM, AC Delco, Fram, etc. With out a problem. In my entire life I have never paid to get my engine oil changed. I myself prefer using the OEM engine oil filter. If I can't I will get a WIX filter or a Napa Gold Filter. Napa Gold filters are made by Wix.

Today I learned that the hex nut on the Honda oil filter cap wrench (p/n 07aaa-plca100) is 17mm, the same size as the oil pan drain bolt.
And the center of it is 3/8" ratchet. On the Pilot I use the 17mm wrench as there is not a lot of clearance to frame rail especially with the oil drain diverter.

BITOG had a link a month ago for this Gearwrench filter wrench for $3.22. It's now back to $13. It was very handy today doing my daughters CRV. I'm not sure what I did tightening last time but my cap wrench version kept slipping on the Fram coating. Many also recommend this Lisle one. Not for tightening but nice for removing. I was quite happy I had the GW today.

The older Honda A01 Filtech filters listed 7.5-10 ft/lbs on it. It also has the 1-2-3-4 on it and says 3/4 turn after gasket contact. I might need to get a new torque wrench as 10 ft/lbs is the minimum on my smaller one. Just seems loose to me if I don't torque it some.
