Synthetic Oil Discussion Thread

It's come to my attention that there has been virtually no discussion on which oil type or brand to use.

This is usually a passionate topic so let's try not to hurt each other's feelings .

After the initial change with all of the special break in juices, I plan to use synthetic oil.

Brand will be dependent upon who makes 0w-20 synthetic.

I also use a Filtermag and a magnet on the drain bolt since it is not leased and will not be gone in 36 months. I plan to keep it for many years and give it to my 12 year old as he heads off to college in 6 short years

syn oil is so prevalent and inexpensive on sale you might as well use it. But it's main advantage is for extended oil change,s but I don't do that anyway, so the advantage for me is lost. I use any national brand 5w-20 that's on sale at the time. Las time Valcoline semi-syn was wabout 16 for the 5 qt jug... I do believe in good filters, so it's the genuine Honda "6 pack" filters from college hills. I have bought the K&N locally too for my 09...

But remember, oil selection and changing is a huge hobby in itself for enthusiasts, so there us always many posts about " I only get the best for my motor, etc"

wanna see major discussions that are a huge ego battle, go to bobistheoilguy.com

I've used Mobil 1 0W-20 (Advanced Fuel Economy) on my soon to be exchanged 2012 Civic Si with no issues.

I usually pick it up in the 5 quart size at Walmart.

I use either a Bosch D3323 oil filter or a Fram XG 7317

Also just picked up one of these to make life a little easier next oil change- http://www.qwikvalve.com/

Mobil 1 is eh. In the ms3 world, the two oils proven to be the best based on uoas were shell rotella t-6 and Penzoil platinum. The mzr disi motor is very hard on oil being turbo and direct injection (fuel dilution).

^^^^ I am liking the Penzoil Platinum the more I learn about it. Amsoil (the first synthetic oil in 1972) is also great but very pricey and I don't think avail in 0/20.
I use non-synthetic Rotella T or Delo in my '80 300SD.

This topic rates right up there with Speaker Wires & Cables-->Brings out the evil side of some.

Over at a Mustang site I belonged to, the subject over what brand & type of oil is the "BEST" brought out the dark side of people and some ended up getting banned.

I have experienced the same discussions on other Auto forums and "bobistheoilguy" is always brought up as a reference for facts...

My advice is, follow the Manufactures recommendation's under warranty, then when it's out of warranty, if you want play around with Viscosity, Types or Brands, knock your self out-->

Amsoil is good stuff. I used to use it when I was in my "I only get the best for my motor" phase (quoting Glen there). Honestly was too much money for me. Wanted to say though that Amsoil does have 0W oils. They have 0W-20, 0W-30 in their top oil (Signature Series), 0W-20 for middle of the road (XL), and 0W-20 in their OE equivalent grade.

Like I said, good stuff, but for me the drive train in mine will probably outlast the feasibility of the car as a whole with name brand oils changed when supposed to.

You can get Amsoil in 0W-20. I have SSO 0W-20 in my car. I'm also using the Amsoil EA filter.

I have the Amsoil MTF in my 6-speed also. Full-syn for me.

I just changed oil, I got Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 from Walmart for around $6 a quart. I notice no difference as far as mpg goes.

Maybe not mpg but in fuel dilution and length of time before it starts breaking down.

I'll bet you I can pull up at least a dozen threads that prove otherwise.

I use the 0W-20 Mobil Synthetic too. Why; because they have the 5 quart jugs on the shelf at 50% of the Wally Worlds. I am just trying to make my life easier. I also buy the Honda filters in bulk from my local dealer.
