Cool Rattle in the trunk

Hey everyone

I own a Black '08 EX-L i4 coupe. I have absolutely no complaints about it.

But...

Where I work there are speed bumps every so often on the road, but they're not big ones, so every one goes over them at 30mph...

Anyways, I hear a rattle in the trunk when I go over the bump. It's like something is popping up and falling down. Nothing is in the trunk.

The only thing I could think of is that the styrofoam thing that holds the jack and whatnot is popping up and down.

Anyone else experiencing this / know a quick fix?

Thanks!

Interestingly I hear a rattle in my trunk also in my 07 Accord Coupe (I know, yours is a 08, but the chassis is very similar). It has been there ever since I bought the car. Whenever I go over bumps, it sounds like something is clacking against the metal panels of the car in the drivers side area of the trunk. What is interesting is that if I have my trunk full, and things are pushing against the sides of the trunk, the rattle does not occur. So I suspect something is loose hitting against the metal panel in the trunk area. I tried to take out the felt liner to get to it, but the plastic fasteners are hard to remove without damaging them. So I resolved to just take it to the dealer when I have time ....

I had checked everything .. I even wrapped the jack and tire iron in styrofoam to rule them out...

I would take it to the dealership and let them figure it out.

I had a similar scenario with my 03. It was a "tapping" type rattle that I thought would be easy to find. I tried everything to fix it but to no avail. And it was in the trunk as well.

Turns out that the rear drivers side strut had a defect and was causing the sound. Who would have guessed. They replaced the strut and all was well.

I hear that noise occasionally, too. If I hit a small, sharp bump, it sounds like something thumping close. I'm pretty sure its the removable trunk floor covering the spare tire. In the 08, it seems especially prone to movement because its "doube jointed" with that extra 4" wide flap on the leading edge. When ever I have something in the trunk that weights down the floor, (groceries in the net, boxes) I don't hear it.

I have the same problem. But I don't think it's the tire cover as it still does it when the trunk is full of groceries n stuff.

Are you SURE you don't have golf clubs back there? LOL

No?

Well in that case like others have said, let the dealer check it out--however I seem to recall every Honda I've owned having a sort of "thunk" back there when I hit certain types of sharp bumps... might just be a trait of the suspension when it hits a bump of a certain type.

Well hitting speed bumps at 20 MPH might be your problem all by itself. Your supposed to slow down for them not 4x4 over them.

Check the deck lid adjustment. If the deck lid latch is not adjusted the deck lid will bottom out on latch and make a sound like you all are describing.
Try adjusting the stops first and then the latch second.
My 5th and 6th gen both had this issue. I just had to adjust mine again last month.

So I had this strange sound coming from the trunk on my new Montego when I went over bumps. Trunk was empty, was stumped.. So I went around the inside of the trunk and banged things until I heard the sound. I've got the satellite radio on my new ride, and the receiver is in the trunk - and one of the wiring harnesses was sort of sitting there, and over the right bump it was banging the inside of the fender. A quick reposition and the sound was gone! So don't forget to consider things behind the padding inside the trunk - it could be an easy fix!

That IS slowing down

I'm talkin bout the firetruck friendly speedbumps, not those parking lot nightmare ones you need to creep over.
