Dealer says I my car jumped time...

So Friday 4/30 I had my car serviced for an A13 service (oil change, tire rotation, transmission service) + rear pads (again). Monday comes around about 4pm on my way to work my check engine light comes on and my car now sounds like a mack truck. I immediately drop it off at tha dealership to have em look at it. The service rep calls me today saying my car jumped time and it's going to be $900 to fix. Am I getting ripped off here? Because my car rode just fine. I just shelled out $400 on friday. I don't have that kinda of money right now. I have 85k on her right now, all highway.

what kind of question is this? lol you're asking us if $900 is worth it to fix it when we have NO IDEA what they are fixing.

Jumped time? What? Ask them for a full list (printed out) of what they are fixing, price per part(s), and labor cost.

"Jumping time" would mean that the timing chain (or belt for V6) in the engine has slipped, and therefore your cams/valvetrain are no longer in sync with your crankshaft. This can be extremely damaging to the engine (if this is the case and you don't get it fixed your engine will be a $5000 doorstop). That being said, $400 seems like a LOT for oil/trans service + rear brake pads. But keep in mind that driving a car that has "jumped time" is a disaster waiting to happen and you will have to get it towed if you want it fixed somewhere else.

Tell them the car drove just fine before they touched it, if the service manager starts to act up call for the owner of the dealership and explain the situation politely, if they deny you then try to get them to meet you half way at least. I am guessing you are out of warranty (which is why its good to buy extended ones if you are driving the car so much). Good luck

Assuming you don't mean that your car is the Delorean from "Back to the Future", I'm guessing you mean the timing chain broke, in which case $900 does not sound excessive.

Looking at the car for potential problems doesn't mean they tear the engine down to inspect every part.

I find it odd that there would be a timing chain problem on such a new car though. Its even more odd that it would happen right after picking it up from a service. I mean the whole damn purpose of a timing chain as to a belt is so that the chain will last the lifetime of the car.

Doesn't anybody actually read posts???? He said he had 85K miles on thecar. It's hardly "new" and certainly WAY out of warranty.

The dealer will cut no slack because 'the car drove fine' prior to this.

Bite the bullet, fork over the money and get it fixed.
