2011 Accord 0w-20 Oil?

My wife has a new 2011 Accord and the owner's manual states that the car requires 0w-20 oil. It seems that particular oil only comes in synthetic at $25/gal.

What are most people doing in terms of oil? 5w-20??

My 2010 says 5w20 on the engine oil cap, confirmed by dealer. Not sure why the switch? perhaps it's part of the increase mpg claims honda is making with the 2011's.

They keep going down in order to get more MPG. I use 5w-30 in my I4, handles harsher driving better, 20 grade is too thin

0w20 should start hitting the Wally-world selves again soon for around $20-$23 /5Qt jug Full Synthetic. On sale of course...

My 10 calls for 5w20, Mobil1 5Qt jug ~ $20 on sale. Keep your eye peeled!

5w-20 is safe. The only reason they switched to 0w-20 is for improved fuel economy and easier cold starts.

I have been running M1 0W-20 since the first oil change. 60K on the odo and will be running 0W-20 for the foreseeable future :p

i have no intention of using anything other than the recommended 0-20w.

Good choice. Why use anything other than what the manufacturer recommends? Honda has a reputation to keep and they're not going to specify an oil that results in premature engine wear.

On what scientific testing do you base the assertion that 20 weight is too thin? Do you know something that Honda is hiding from us?

its simple, oil breaks down over time. see some testing done with say Mobil 1, it was found to to thin faster than it should. So say you buy Mobil 1 at 5w-20, later down the line it will thin and you are left with 15 perhaps 10. Oil breakdown and thinning isnt a new concept, again it depends on the oil used and how you drive your car

Right, but 5W30 breaks down too. The question is does 5W20 break down quickly enough to be a problem in our cars, and you have yet to answer that question. I must assume Honda is aware of the viscosity breakdown and wouldn't have recommended it unless they knew it wasn't an issue. You have asserted that 5W20 is too thin but you have provided no evidence that 5W20 is in fact a problem.

I have a friend with a 2005 I4 Accord. He pushes his car very hard and uses only 5W20. At 320,000 km his compression is the same as it was when his car was new. Seems to me like 5W20 passes muster just fine.

You are correct but again it depends. It depends on how often you change your oil, filter you use for that extended time and etc. I use Pennzoil Platinum and change it every 5-7k depending on driving conditions. The way I figure is my oil is probably at that 5-20 level after that millage at breakdown. I don't know how good Honda 2 system oil is (half and half), maybe it doesn't break down at all. I also dont know how well Pennzoil holds up for a longer period but every review and people on bobistheoilguy.com swear by it so its good. I am just speaking from what I am using, and it suits me well. 5w-20 is not always available and 5-30 doesnt make an inch of a difference other than the same price, being readily available and holding up to harsher driving a bit better.

But the crux of the matter is that despite your assertion that 5W20 is too thin you still can't back up that assertion. You can't show that using 5W20 will ever cause any damage as long as the manufacturer's OCI is followed. I mean, manufacturers like Honda and Ford have been specifying 5W20 for many years and there don't seem to be any complaints about engine damage due to the use of said oil.

My friend with the 2005, BTW, uses only Honda oil and Honda filters changed at Honda specified intervals and UOA's show no engine wear or poor filtering whatsoever.

You say you figure your oil is at 5W20 at your drain interval. It sounds like you've never had it tested (because if you had you would have said "my oil is at 5W20") and therefore you can't really know. It's all supposition and very unscientific. And like I said, Honda knows that viscosity breakdown occurs and they still specify 5W20 - I'll stick with the guidelines of the Honda engineers.

I ran 5W-20 in our '01 Accord with the 2.4L four cylinder engine for 150k completely trouble free miles. Specifically, I used 'regular dino oil' of whatever name brand had the best deal going at that time ... Castrol GTX, Penzoil, or Vavoline. Changed oil and filter at 5k mile intervals. Only reason we sold the '01 and got our current '09 is that the primary driver of the Accord wanted a new one. Now, we run the same juice in the '09's four cylinder. Seems to me the 5W-20 works just fine.
