Powertrian Control Module Update and Warranty Extension Letter
Just received this notice in the mail today. It is to due with Carbon Deposit build up and oil consumption.I always thought the oil consumption was a little high between oil changes.
Product Update and Warranty Extension:
Powertrain Control Module Software Update to Prevent Garbon Deposit Accumulation
Dear 2008-2009 Honcia Accord Owner.
We are sending ihis letter to notify you of a Product Update and a Warranty Extension that apply to your vehicle.
Please check that the 17-digit Vehicle ldentification Number (VlN) at the top of this letter matches the 17-digit VIN on the
upper left of your vehicle's dashboard.
What is the problem?
Gasoline sold in some regions of Canada may have certain properties ihat can promote carbon deposits to be generated
under specific engine operating conditions. Our engines are designed to cope with this without impact to performance,
durability or emissions. However, an unanticipated combination of usage of these fuels in conjunction with frequent low
temperature engine starts, high engine Ioad and high engine speed during engine warm-up may create potential for
excessive deposit accumulation on the piston and piston rings.
As these deposits accumulate over time the rate of oil consumption may be affected. To prevent this phenomenon and
maintain peak engine performance, a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software update is available that will prevent
Ceposit accumulation. (This Product Update will expire on 31 January,2015.) However, if sufficient deposit accumulation
has occurred prior to the sofhvare update, excessive oil consumption may result.
To ensure customer satisiaction, HonCa Canada will extend the warranty period for the engine of affected vehicles for
excesslve oil consumptlcn rssues Cue to Ceposit accumulation up to 7 ,-ears1160,000 km from the date when the vehicie
,.'ras fi:st purchased or leased as a new vehicle. r'.hichever occurs first. The warranty extension will only apply to veh cles
,.,,,lth the soft, vare update performed before 28 Fe5n ary.2013. This rvarranty extension provides coverage for the current
owner and any subsequent owners, provided the veh;cle has never been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by an
insurer or financial institution, or has never been similarly branded (or similarly titled) under provincial regulations. Thrs
warranty extension does not cover engine damage due to accidents, misuse, or lack of proper maintenance.
What should you do?
Contact your Honda dealer to schedule an appointment to have your vehicle's software updated. This will also allow your
dealer to give you an idea of how long they will require your vehicle - usually less than a day. The dealer will update the
softrvare free of charge.
lf you believe your engir:e is consumirg an excessive amount of oil, please notify your se..vice advisor at the time of your
nert o;l change. An oil consumption test rvill be initiated on your vehicle to determine whether your vehicle exhibits
symptoms associated with excessive oil consumplion due to carbon deposit accumulation. Please note that this oil
consumption test will require you to return to the dealership after ihe vehicle has accumulated enough mileage to
consume approximately 1 litre of engine oil.
lf the oil consumption issue is determined to be related to deposit accumulation, the pistons and piston rings will be
replaced in your engine. Please be prepared to make arrangements with your dealership to leave your vehicle for up to
one week to complete this repair.
