Using oil, causing a P1259 VTEC code

Howdy!

my '02 coupe (2.3 I4, AT) now has 215k miles. Right before my last oil change (~7000 miles on oil) it threw a P1259 code. The dealer said it is usually due to low oil, and we checked and I was about 1 quart low. Now it it 2 oil changes later, again with about 7000 miles on the oil, and I am about a quart maybe a quart and a half low again. I've never had this problem before (or at least it didn't use/burn enough oil in 7500 miles to throw a code for me to notice), but am wondering if this is just part of having a 215k mile car?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Using 1-2 quarts per 7k is remarkable for a 215k mile engine. Some new Accords don't don't do that good. What oil are you using? You could switch to one of the high mileage oils like Valvoline Maxlife to see if that reduces your minimal consumption and check the oil level more often instead of relying on the CEL. You also might want to change the PCV valve if it has not been changed before.

I agree about the oil consumption. On a F23 that's quite good for that mileage.

Check the screen in the vtec solenoid (part of the gasket) make sure it's clean, any dirt in the screen can cause the oil pressure to the solenoid to be low, when you run lower on oil the volume of oil available isn't enough to get full pressure up there.

What oil are you currently using in the car?

Well,

On the way into work this morning, the car tried to stall at idle several times. If I kept my foot on the gas to keep the idle at around 1000rpm, it ran fine. It did this for a few stoplights, then seemed to run OK after that. When I got to work I checked the oil again, and it was barely touching the bottom of the dipstick (after I added 1 qt yesterday). So I guess I was around 2+ qts low.

The question is, will having low oil cause it to want to stall at idle?

Not anymore. From 04/07 to 07/08 I was commuting about 160 hwy miles a day, so I racked up quite a few in that time frame.

Now I commute about 50 miles a day, but it is more state route/back road type stuff.

I was asking because mine seems to consume oil too, but only when I'm on the highway with the constant high rpm. I can cruise around town all month and not have a problem, but if I make a trip to the shore and back (hour each way) I'll be down 2 qts just that fast. And no one I know has a clue of why that happens.

Thats odd. I don't spend all my time at high rpms, but who knows, could be a similar problem.

Well I don't like to really have it going more than 3k rpms (which equals about 80mph in 5th). But when I keep it there for a while that's when the oil disappears on me. But like I said, with regular city driving I have no issues.
Here's the thread I started when I initially notice the problem: HELP! My Engine Eats Oil!! gen6

Consider a 10W30 for the next oil change to see if it lessens consumption. With that many miles it may not do squat but it is worth a try. It doesn't need to be Honda branded oil. 10W30 is usually safe to about -15ºF. Try it.

10w30 will actually increase consumption. It sounds backwards, but it does prove out on many cars.

The 5w20 that Honda and Ford use are a much higher quality oil than most, 10w30 oils out there. No dino 10w30 is anywhere near as good as a Ford/Honda spec'd 5w20.

Has your car in its life ever had the thermostat replaced?
