Catalytic Converter Rattling

I have been hearing a noise coming from under the hood when I accelerate or when idling. I opened the hood and would press the throttle and noticed the noise was coming from up under the engine. I got up under the car and could pinpoint the rattling noise coming from the catalytic converter. I cut the car off and tapped the converter with a rubber mallet and could barely hear a rattling noise but it didn't sound like something was loose in it. I haven't noticed the car running any differently other than hearing extra noise. I checked the bolts on the catalytic converter and everything was tight. Is this symptoms of the converter getting ready to die? Should I just wait it out until I start noticing problems? Is there a way to remove the converter and check it out?

Are you sure it isn't the shield around it?

That happened on my 1985 Accord and I just took it off.

Welcome to the club - Me to
Co-worker suggested it could be the double-wall down pipe has collapsed, and is now touching inside (downpipe=pipe between exhaust manifold and CAT)

Odds are quite good it's the heat shield around the catalytic converter. Go to your local hardware or big box home store (an auto store may have this too) and get a radiator screw-type hose clamp big enough to fit around the converter. Unscrrew the clamp completely, thread the open end of the clamp around the top of the converter and retighten. I'll bet the noise goes away.

It rattled with the shield that goes around the CAT, off...
Oddly thought, It stopped if I pushed slightly by hand on the CAT?

I'll attempt to remove the heat shield around the cat tomorrow to see if the rattling stops. Thanks for all of the suggestions and I will update you guys and let you know if that was the problem.

my cat was rattling because the core was broken off the walls, and was rattling around inside

i could tell where it was coming from by hitting it with a pry bar while it was jacked up
