When to change CVT fluid - miles or MM driven?

Hey guys!

My '14 Accord Sport popped up the wrench and the A12 code yesterday.

Planning to do the oil change with Mobil 1 EP and Honda filter, air and cabin filter off College Hills Honda (hope that is the best place for parts?)

Question is : do I change the CVT fluid out now, or wait for the MM to show the code for it?

The car has 27820 miles on it as of today. I'm in Michigan, 30 miles a day (majority highway), some short trips in the winter and I like to step on the gas hard and play with paddle shifters once in a while.

Factory CVT fluid is still in.

What do you all recommend?

Air and cabin filter will be cheap on Amazon

Searching! This question comes up often. Good write-ups here. Several have changed it early- before the MM. Most just change it when the MM pops up. No issues.

Take a look at my signature, and you will get an idea of what the MM will tell you. I drive mostly highway too, 125 miles round trip M-F.

How long do you plan on keeping your car? Repairs don't look bad at all for 173K miles.

I've been changing my CVT fluid every 30K just because. I might be wasting money doing this though... Are you doing the 3X drain and fill every 3rd CVT fluid change?

It seems like MM will suggest CVT fluid changes around the 50k mark. It seems pretty darn easy to change, so my plan is to do the changes around the 40k mark. That's about every 2 years with the miles that I put on the car.

No! The CVT does NOT have a torque converter where some of the old fluid would remain. Hence, no need for a 3x3 drain and fill on a CVT transmission. One drain should remove 3.7 quarts of fluid- which happens to be the stated capacity of the CVT transmission.

I plan to keep it until it dies lol, and when that happens I will probably replace the engine with a rebuilt. My previous Accord ('02) gave me 406K miles haha. I know, I feel that I have been pretty lucky so far.

No, I take it to my local Honda mechanic and I'm pretty sure he just does the drain and fill. For my next one, I plan to do it myself going forward.

I forgot to write down the mileage and even the date on my service manual, and took a guess at when I did that oil change, however, when I left work yesterday, I re-did my calculations, and it should be something like 114K or so. I'll update later on when I get a chance to see the new number I wrote down. No, I didn't forget to reset the MM, I am very adamant about resetting it after I do the work.

I have only had the valve clearance checked once, which I believe was at the 107K mark and my mechanic said they were fine and didn't need adjustment. When I check my manual, I will add that to my signature. I don't plan on doing it anytime soon though, since he charged me like $100 for that lol.

jumping into a thread, hope it's on topic enough.
I am just changing it every 40,000... and as I approach 80,000 let me ask this:
I did a simple drain and fill at 40,000 ...
What do you guys think at 80,000, drain and fill?
Or the extreme 3x drain and fill over a short period to accomplish a 82% full change out, or whatever the calculated % is......????????

New to this forum thing so sorry if this is the wrong thing to ask, but i have been reading into doing this as i just hit 40k. Have you been using the honda fluid or amsoil? I am leaning towards amsoil but any advice helps

Depending on who you want to believe, the general consensus is to use OEM Honda fluid. High quality fluids are probably just as good, some of us had older Accord's with notorious transmission issues.

My question is why not just go with the Maintenance Minder? I owned a 2000 V6 Accord Coupe and the transmission failed at 93,000 miles. Honda extended the warranty to seven years and 100,000 miles and replaced it for free. However, the automatic in my 07 Fit runs just fine and no one on the Fit discussion boards have had automatic transmission problems after driving a lot more than the 86,000 miles we have on our car. Honda has invested a fortune in their CVT technology and I believe that if a problem arises they will extend the warrantee to cover any manufacturing defects that might arise. On the other hand, if you just like replacing the fluid more frequently for peace of mind, I'm sure Honda dealers, independent mechanics and part's supply houses will be happy to sell you their services and products.
