I have a question for you about the Catalytic Converter on my 2003 I-4 Accord. Yesterday while comming to work the check engine light came on.
I have 112K on my Accord and it runs great. I stopped by the Honda dealer before going to work. The service manager had my Accord checked for codes by a Tech. The manager came back in about ten minutes and told me he had the Tech reset the computer to remove the check engine light and that the code was for the Catalytic Converter. He then said if it came back the coverter may need to be replaced
to pass emissions which I have to do in May. He then told me if it had to be replaced it was $800.00. Anyone have a similar expierence or a fix that isn't going to cost $800.00!!
Thanks Bullit

if the code was a P0420, yes the cat is bad.
$800 or a little less is it.
You really can't use a cheaper cat, check out other threads on this.

aftermarket cats don't work as well and Hondas are especially sensitive to how well the cat on the car works.

You can try two things, one, beat the absolute crap out of the car to get the cat hot. Cars that are driven sedately and not at extended highway use seem to set these codes more often.

The other way is to run some carb cleaner into the intake while the car is running to artificially raise the temp in the cat, this can be dangerous if too much is done and make the car stink like hell.

On the '98 V6 here at home, beating the crap out of it, as in flooring and holding it there all the way into 4th gear (auto), 3 times in a row, kept the light off for 6 months.

The light on that car started coming on at around 120k, the cat finally died for good at 175k.
