I thought the 03's were far superior to the 99-01's. I drove an 04 for ~1000+ miles and it's much more powerful. The +30/35HP and extra gear makes a HUGE difference :yes:

Unfortunately this might mean I may have to be selling the Accord I haven't driven a pre-03 Odyssey for very long. I don't recall ever driving one even when I worked for the tint shop. But the 03 was really nice, really comfortable on long trips. But my parents didn't need a van, it was nice to have the extra space and the comfortable ride for road trips though.

i am glad that my mother never bought an ody...... not cause of tranny issues, mind you, but wanting to pack even more crap in there for vacation.....

i can only imagine what else she would cram into that vehicle..... :lmao: :nuts:

If you want to add Honda Alloys, and want to keep the tires, I suggest the wheels froma 1997-98 Odyssey EX. I always thought they would look good on a white 2nd gen ody.

Hmm- does the 2nd gen Odyssey work with 15" wheels? Not sure on the caliper size. Regardless, though, the offset is closer to the Accord range than the Ody range - I actually bought a set of the 1st gen ody wheels on ebay to use on the accord, but they were all bent and the seller took 'em back.....

Personally, I'd go with 16" rims on ben's ody for stability...

I don't think 15's are going to work either, I took a quick peek at the brakes when I was under and they look huge. If I were to upgrade to alloys, I'd be looking at the 16/17" polished lines from Honda...98-02 Accord EX V6 Coupe, 99+ 3.2TL/Type-S, 3.2CL/Type-S, AV6MT :)

Nope - when they went from the Oasis/Odyssey 1st gen to 2nd gen, they went to 16" for both steel and alloy. I owned a 96 Isuzu Oasis - very nice small van :thmsup:

Accordlover, that's kind of how ours looks right now, I mean with the missing center cap over the passenger front wheel. We lost ours somewhere between Anaheim and Seattle. We weren't going to even consider trying to find it. Although those suckers are expensive. I'm trying to remember if they're $40 or $70 but they're really expensive. We had to replace them before. Sadly I can't find them on HandA. Our '97 is Black Currant Pearl.

The interior...I don't really know what kind of people the previous owners were but they had a 10 month old kid, yet the interior is spotless...didn't know that a kid and a clean interior could co-exist :dunno: :lmao:

I am jealous of the van Ben. I am really thinking about it. I called my local dealer and asked what they would give me for the accord. Only 12k, so I think the wifes car may be traded.

KIDS & clean cars coexsist here. At least with ours, not their parents. My kids weren't allowed to eat or drink in our cars.... long trips had exceptions sometimes, but I was picky abouot what they had in there. I still am.

Nothing sticky, nothing around town. I do still use a felt backed plastic seat protector for the kid booster seats.

The main problem I get with them is the footprints on the back of the front seats! They get to see me turn red & the veins pop out when I see them!! :lmao: With them back here, I have them in my car more than mom's.... but mine's always cleaner!! :thmsup:

We got an LE I4 AT. Camry is an ok car, really quiet and smooth. One thing about it is that it's really HUGE inside...I was absolutely shocked at how much bigger it is than my Accord and the 97 Camry, it's really like they pulled space out of nowhere. The engine bay looks equally open compared to the 97, the trunk is bigger, and the rear seat feels like 2x the size :lmao: Dunno how they do it. Handling is typical Camry, floaty (dare I say, even worse than the Ody? haha) but smooth. The powertrain is stronger than my Accord's, huge improvement over the previous 5S-FE. I would like to have myself a SE V6 5-speed but that won't happen :(

You're right. The previous gen Camrys are huge! My ex g/f's mom has an '05 SE V6 and we would take that out for a spin at night. The car is floaty but the ride is very comfy. Oh, the back seat...wow!! TONS of space!! :naughty:

and 17s with 255s/55s would be perfectly comfortable.

215/55?? I think the originals are 225/60 16's so 215/55 17's would work (if you had the 6MT rim)... Just got to find something that has the same/ better load rating as the OEMs (98T).

Originals are 215/65 and changed to 225/60 in the 02 MMC. As for the rims...all is a pipe dream at the moment :lmao:

stevencrosbie told me that apparently the replaced ones are even worse than the original ones, but I really have no ideas either way on that one. I just replaced my tranny fluid again today and there was still crud on the magnetic drain plug, even though I'd cleaned it twice in the past 500 miles. Guess that's how they work

First gear has usually has a delayed upshift unless you lift off the gas. Either it's gonna shift between 2000-2500 or it's gonna shift at 3500+. Consensus is this is normal. Also you'll feel the downshift to first coming to a stop.

The sliding doors tend to stick. If it's an EX, this might affect the door motors (trying to open doors that are crazy hard to open, then they burn out). On a LX this ain't really a problem, they still stick but it doesn't really do anything. The fix is easy...so far my silicon spray done alright, but the more permanent fix is some gauze type tape.

Rear drums tend to squeal. Only way to fix that is to replace the shoes AND drums, no two ways around it. But if it doesn't bother you, I don't think it does any harm.

Some people have problems with the rear vent windows, not sure exactly what...mine been okay.

Curious what is the price gap between the 01 and 02 in your area? I believe the 02 is a much better van, if you drive both I think you will see the difference. The trannies I've seen the 5-speed is more reliable but less durable...they break less in the early miles but they started going like clockwork recently after they hit 60-90K. I've seen the 4AT's been chewed up as quick as 20K and seen em go almost 200K too.

Sounds like early stages of decline on tranny life.. Mine started that at about 130K at in over 25k has preceded to shudder as well on shifts. It has banged hard a few times from a rolling stop and actually set the check engine light once, then it would not shift to D4 until I stopped and cleared codes.
I will be replacing my tranny sometime this month or next week :dunno:

I really haven't noticed any ill driving effects really...it shifts like butter now after 3 drain/fills, the only thing you really feel is the 2-1 downshift but I can feel that in some other cars without tranny problems too.

I asked about the late shift on Ody forums and they all say it's normal, some people have had it since new and have quite a few miles on their vans.

I look at the crash ratings for the different vans and its really those two that stick out. I liked the gm vans until I saw the steering wheel was implanted in the dummys face after iihs tests.

I am leary of the tranny issues on the 01 oddy and the sludge/looks on the same years sienna. I get myself in such a damn hurry to buy something and I don't know why. Her car is still in great shape and the truck does what its needed to do. The accord is still best for my commute too.

Anyway... to sum it up... I am waiting for that deal to come along, and in no real rush. I will keep you updated when it does happen though.

I agree you should wait. Ours just came along at the right time and right conditions. We were in between cars (sold the old one and the title on the new one wasn't here yet) so we needed one, the Ody price was right, condition was great, and we'd been lookin for a van anyway but were kind of on the fence since we didn't wanna pay full coverage+collision insurance.

The Sienna of that generation I think were pretty decent vans, the sludge is not too bad an issue IMO. I've seen several Toyota V6's go 300K+. Although, my friend has a 98 and his tranny went out around 80K too...so the tranny is not an isolated Honda issue (they failed on the RX300's as well). The new 5-speeds have hesitation problems too. As for the looks, well can't help you there...but I have to say they look VERY nice in certain colors with alloys.

I like the GM vans a lot too. Had a couple, one for Vegas/Grand Canyon and one for Seattle/Vancouver. Excellent vans with decent power and great comfort, and 22MPG with 6 people going over the Northern CA mountains gets a :thmsup: My friend has a first model year Venture with over 120K goin strong :D We probably would have gotten one if we ever ran across the right one, but I never did an active search.
