I just purchased a Honda Accord 02' SE and I noticed that the brakes are starting to squeal and when I felt the rotor w/ my finger tip I could feel grooves in the right front rotor. I got a feeling the pads are probably worn and need replacing but I am wondering how much damage does it take to a rotor before it needs to be replaced instead of being turned. I have never had a rotor turned bc I have always replaced my pads early before any damage was done to my rotor. If the rotor needs replacing, is the process easy on replacing it? And also which pads and rotors are good for the Honda? I saw the how to on putting brake pads on and using that certain paste which I have never done before on any other vehicle. Do you have to use the paste?

There is a tool they use to measure the thickness of the rotor. Once it reaches that tolerance thickness, and I don't know what it is, they will not turn the rotors because it will become too thin and thus will be prone to warping from the heat. The best thing to do is to take it to your trusted mechanic and have him check the thickness and go from there.

The tool is called a micrometer. Usually depending on the condition of the rotor it can be turned. I used to go Napa machine shop to get mine done.

Bearing in mind the inferior quality of new Accord disks, I think your only real option is to get new ones, pref made by someone other than Honda!! :paranoid:

The pads are the culprit, not the rotors.
