Maybe I didn't understand some responses, but what I'm trying to find out before I attempt a tranny fluid change is:

Does the entire transmission pan have to be unbolted and drained or is there a drain plug similar to that of the oil pan??

Also I was told by a couple of auto parts shops and a honda dealer as well, that there is no transmission filter on my car.

Again I have a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6.

Can anyone explain what needs to be done on my make and model??

Thanks--

Remember if you want to have a case if your trannie goes within warranty, use HONDA ATF, and change it every 30k, I reomment 25k or 15k if you can, especially if you do alot of city driving.

Ridiculous mileage? You make me laugh. :lmao:

30k has been the starndard fluid change interval on Honda automatics for a long, long, long time. (Is it not still 30k? Our 03' was...)

Have you seen the failure rate of recent honda transmissions? I'd rather get my fluid changed for 55 bucks by my mechanic than replace a $2000 transmission. Just MY $.02

BTW: Your vibration at idle, if its not 'really' bad, is basically a Honda thing.

I don't know what you're talking about but when I look at the maintenance schedule for 7th gen I4 AT, it's at 120K. I have never seen a Honda with a regular 30K interval...even the Odyssey's were a 45K normal, 30K severe.

I have seen the failure rate of the 7th gen AT. It amounts to maybe 2 or 3 out of the entire forum. And we have several 100K+ V6's.

That said, it's not a bad idea to replace the fluid. Each time you drain, you only get about maybe 25-40% out - our Ody drains 2.9qts out of 7.2 at one time. So if you think about it, if you wanted to change it at 60,000 miles, you should really do it every 15-25K since you don't get it all out at once.

I've never 'looked' at the maitennace schedule, but I follow Hondas reccomendations by mileage and the dealer or my mechanic says 30k. My bad.

So are you saying that I just drain through the drain plug and refill or should I drop the transmission pan to change the filter also? I assume the filter is not accessible without dropping the pan, is this correct. But I must poing out that my local honda dealer said that the 2005 accord v6's do not have a serviceable filter?? If you can, please clarify.

Thanks--

It is not considered a "serviceable" filter but as with any part, of course it can still be replaced if you try hard enough. If you are concerned, just get a MagneFine filter, and do drain/fill. I wouldn't take off the pan, it's really not necessary and the filter isn't in there anyway.

To Benji, thanks for your help. I will try to drain, but as to the filter, my car has only 29000 miles so maybe this time I should just drain and fill?? At what mileage would you suggest that the filter be changed. I will probably make the transmission fluid change a regular maintenance item and do it about every 15,000 miles. But if so does the filter really need to be changed each time.

thanks-

The filter is not considered a serviceable item even though it can be changed. If you do your proper drain/fill at regular intervals you will be fine, don't worry about the filter.
