I recently purchased a '98 EX 5sp 4cyl VTEC that is in excellent condition. One little annoyance I noticed is when I am starting out in 1st gear and shifting up the engine revolutions increase 200 to 300 rpms as soon as I
push in the clutch and let off the accelerator(at the same time). It does not do it if I let off the accelerator first, then push in the clutch. Is this normal or is it a problem? Thanks for any suggestions.

MTF fluid change? Lawyer? WTF?

Honda's interval for MTF change is 120K...my belief is that if you didn't change it nothing would happen. It's a sealed system with no slippage, if it's properly driven it's not critical to change it. I changed mine at 113K and 137K and the improvements were minimal both times, if there even were any.

A lawyer, that was really funny. Literally suing over nothing...there's nothing wrong with the car, just get used to driving it. The clutch engagement is rather high so you have to adjust your timing. I had it at first but it's not a problem at all now.

im pretty sure its just the throttle is not completely closed at the time the clutch is completely disengaged. you might think you're doing both exactly at the same time, but in reality you're probably not.

Hiring a lawyer for "one little annoyance" that is perfectly normal is hardly an option...it's more like a waste of time.

the lawyers will love you for it though. :D

Many people find the way the MTs 94-98 shift weird..... my daughter has had two '95s & if she lets a friend drive them, they whine & complain.... they tll her to have it checked out. So far the only thing that's ever been wrong when they do is a bad clutch cylinder. :dunno:

I've read that this is because of a heavy flywheel. Basically what happens when you throw in the clutch, the sudden disengagement from the drivetrain and the momentum of the heavy flywheel keeps the engine "free spinning" for a sec or two. Sounds plausible. I know that a performance upgrade on many cars is to put on lighter flywheels so RPMs drop more quickly between gears shifting.
