My mechanic..........Honda certified, is doing my oil change tomorrow. He swears by the regular Mobil 1 oil for Hondas as long as you change it at the 3000-5000 mile intervals. Well, he also carries Redline synthetic and he says its a great motor oil.......difference in cost is $20 vs $60. What would you recommend??? :dunno:

Stick with the Mobil 1, Redline is not worth the extra $40

You could change the oil and filter three times for only one fill of Redline. I think if you had too much money in your pocket, that's a better way to get rid of it than using the Redline  The only exception would be that if you are far away from your service center, and/or you NEED the car every day for business, and you travel a lot, then the extended intervals might help you out.

Thanks for the replies.....
But, do you all also think that regular (not synthetic) oil is as good as the Redline full synthetic??? Do you think the engine will run cooler and have less wear?

Between those two, I'd run Mobil 1. There won't be any real difference in engine wear or how cool it runs, and you'll just be wasting $40 per oil change, and too-frequent oil changes at that. Changing it at 3-5K is a waste for synthetic. You can very easily and very safely go the full distance on your oil change interval with Mobil 1 or any other synthetic. Heck, you could even do it with dino oil if you don't punish it too much.
Of course, I'd use Pennzoil Platinum over either of them for the price, but that's a whole different discussion for a whole different thread. :naughty:

Folks,
be aware he can't be talking about Mobil 1. He's got to be talking about Mobil DC 5000.

So you are recommending Mobil 1 synthetic?? My mechanic suggests using plain old Mobil 5w20. Which is what Honda delivers their cars with.

When you said Mobil 1 in your original post, I assumed the synthetic because that's what true "Mobil 1" is. Mobil Clean 5000 is dino and Mobil Clean 7500 is a syn blend. Either would be fine for 3-5K intervals. Nothing that special about them, but nothing really bad either.
No I'm not "recommending" Mobil 1, only that between the two you mentioned originally (again assuming M1 synthetic), that's what I'd choose.
Also, be careful about saying Honda delivers their cars with Mobil. I don't think they've ever said conclusively that's what they use. But even if it is, it's a different/special formulation designed for break-in, with high molybdenum and perhaps some other stuff mixed in during assembly. They are very clear that it is specifically created for that purpose. It's not just plain old off-the-shelf Mobil (or other oil).
Good luck! :)

Thanks for your input.
My mechanic only works on Hondas and ordered a barrel of Honda OEM motor oil for his oil changes......It says Mobil 1 on the barrel. But its not the synthetic he said.

The stuff they put in at the factory isn't necessarily what they sell to you. My dealership uses Helm manuals but sells you Haynes (gee I wonder why...)

Redline is a top notch, boutique, true synthetic ester based oil. Their 5w20 is very good stuff and has an HTHS rating (high temp/high shear) as good as some 5/10W30 viscosities.
But it's very expensive and not necessary for the engines Honda uses in the Accords and Civics. These engines are very easy on oil and most any 5w20 will meet the need.

Over at BITOG, we did a bunch of VOA's on Honda's factory oil. It's loaded with moly for one thing, hence the need to keep it in longer as a "special" oil for breaking in, and the other spec's were pretty close to that of Pennzoil. However, in this business, it's the lowest bidder that meets the spec's. So at any given time, it could be any oil. Just depends on who gets the lowest bid in first that meets factory specs.

Schmoe,
VOAs or UOAs? How was a VOA done on a factory oil?
