View Full Version : My new PC build!
messfeeder 05-08-2007, 06:50 AM OK, so I just ordered a bunch of stuff off of newegg.com and did a new build for my PC. I'm really excited about it, so I thought I'd come in here and brag to you guys. It was definitely a fun hobby putting this thing all together!
Here are specs:
mobo: MSI P6N SLI PLATINUM
PSU: Thermaltake 600W
MEM: 1Gx2
CPU: INTEL|C2D E6600 2.4G
Video: Geforce 8800GTX
Sound: Creative X-FI ELITE PRO
OS: MS WIN VISTA 32BT HMPREM
Now I just need to learn how to overclock.
Running BF2142 on highest settings with no lag is awesome! And it makes a difference, too. I was pwning fools last night!
Anyone else do any recent PC upgrades?

Good choice on the vid card man! Go big or go home right man? Im looking to upgrade myself. Ill probably stay in the AMD and ASUS camp for processors and mobo's since everything is so inexpensive.
Are you goin up to 2 gig's o ram at some point?
James.uk 05-08-2007, 07:45 AM Sounds nice. :) I hope you get a lot of pleasure out of it..
I just upgraded my graphics card from a Radeon 1600 thingy to a Radeon X800XT platignum..
After changing it, I had to reload all my video players as they all went weird! :( I only changed it because a friend was selling his PC and offered to do a part ex, my old card plus £20 (40$?) for his X800XT, so I did the swop. :)
FS 2004 doesn't seem to have the scenery clarity it did on the old card even after a reinstall, but other than that all seems well. :) I have a GIG of DDram maybe I need another GIG for the new card to run properly.. :dunno:

Nice build. The X-Fi card is amazing. I have one, and I love it. Probably the second best thing I bought for my computer, next to the X1800 video card.

True story. I thought I deleted that from my post. hah, Im a horse's a$$
dohcivtec 05-08-2007, 08:57 AM you can overclock with motherboard settings. i can overclock but my pentium d runs too hot. since you run msi, you have the overlocking software on the cd. im on the msi p something neo. overlock by when turning on the pc, press del to go to bios setting. look for it in there to overclock also.
namegoeshere 05-08-2007, 09:10 AM Nice set up you got there. I'm tempted to do a full system rebuild but I can't justify it yet. My current set up is still going strong. I'm thinking maybe in a year or so but :dunno:
Matt-Guy 05-08-2007, 09:15 AM I built a new computer too about a month ago. My specs are as follows:
Case: Antec P180 with 4 120mm Fans
Motherboard: EVGA 680i A1 board
Processor: Intel E6600
Ram: 2 Gig PC8500 OCZ SLI Ready 1066
Harddrives: 2 Western Digital Raptors 10,000RPM 150GB, 1 400 GB Western Digital 7200rpm.
DVD Drives: 2 Samsung DL burners with lightscribe.
Video Card: EVGA 8800 GTX 768mb ram
Audio Card: SB X-Fi Fata1ity pro
Power supply: Thermaltake ToughPower 850watt
HeatSink: Tuniq120
Monitor: Acer 24 inch LCD
I don't play BF2142 but I do play BF2 and it is outstanding. I now have to wait for people's computers to load the game. Sometime I will be in the game 10 seconds before people start showing up, giving me the time to capture some easy bases. And it looks awesome now.

Not sure about the MSI (Although I was going to use it based off of Toms Hardware review, but it was not around when I built.) but the EVGA has a tool in Windows you can use to overclock everything (Including the Video Card). Pretty sweet, you can also adjust fan speeds and voltages all while in the comfort of windows. Another nice thing is they have a stability test all built in so you can test your new settings.
With the 4 120mm fans and the Tuniq120 (Which has a 120mm fan) I have been told I can overclock like crazy, but since BF2 plays fine without it I still have not done anything drastic. At this point I am using headphones (Sennheiser HD201) to play games because the X-Fi can turn each side into I think 7 speakers which allows you to sense where stuff is going on around you much better than just a set of stereo speakers in front of you would.
Also this is not my regular computer, at this point it is only for games (Microsoft FS X, BF2, and sooner or later my classics Empire Earth 2, and Age of Empires).
My Super Pi times (mind you this just works the Processor and Mem, not the Video Card) are for 2M 50 Seconds, and for 32M 20M48S stock. Overclocked to 2.6 (200mhz OC) 2M goes to 47S and for 32M 19M22S. The whole time my processor never got above 100 Degree's OC 200Mhz. I kept Ram at 1066. Not sure how high it can go and I don't feel like testing it as I can't measure temp on it to see when I am stressing it. So overclocking 200Mhz give me a 6-7% increase on a 12% overclock.
psyshack 05-08-2007, 06:19 PM Enjoy your new e6600. I know Im enjoying mine a long with a e6300. They overclock very well. :)
dohcivtec 05-08-2007, 07:32 PM im waiting to upgrade to core2duo. juss gotta wait for the quad cores to push down the price :). is there really a big advantage compared to the pentium d's? i have the pentium d 945.

That setup is overkill for any current game, I am running BF2142 to the max on my Athlon 64 3800+, 1gb pc3200, and 7600gt, granted, i am running at more than 3ghz on stock cooling
thesteve151 05-08-2007, 08:21 PM i have regretted building mine.
i have been trying to solve a freezing problem since i built it almost a year ago.
i think my mother board is bad :thumbsdow and i had a raptor hard drive go bad on me, still need to send that back, but not till i find out what else is bad.
newegg is a good choice though. that is who i went through.
what hard drives you running?
here are my stats since you asked.

Obviously, it would depend on what you do with your computer.
If you do a lot of number crunching (e.g. Mathematica), video editing, photo editing, music editing... etc., then yes there'd be a difference.
If, on the other hand, it's just for Internet, email, etc... then no.
dohcivtec 05-08-2007, 08:34 PM i usually run cs mainly.

Wow, that's a hefty PSU! Nice build.
I haven't been on BF2 since I started playing 2142. I thought the game looked dumb when it came out, but then I won it from GameInformer. It takes a pretty special game to steal my attention from BF2, BF2:SF, and Oblivion. I don't even sleep anymore between work and school!
messfeeder 05-09-2007, 12:07 AM what hard drives you running?
The master hard drive is the stock Western Digital out of my old emachines (160G). The Slave is another Western Digital (250G). I don't know RPM's off hand.
The master CD drive is also out of the good ol' emachines. I also have a Sony DL DVD burner. I have a card reader as well, but I can't get it working on this mobo for some reason. Maybe I need to update to a new one.
That reminds me...I still need to send in for my rebates. :naughty:

Oblivion is quite the power hog. How does it run on your setup? I have to run everything a little below the medium settings. My XP 3000+ and 6600GT is showing its age, I still play it though.

The only thing that I have run so far is 2142. Oblivion ran fine at medium settings on my 64 Athlon w/ 6600GT. I'm sure the new setup will dominate it!

Wow I havn't played BF2 for some time, I rmber when I would play everyday for atleast an hour. hehe kinda miss it.
I upgraded my pc last year. AMD 64 4000+, 1800xl vid card and MSI motherboard. Kinda out dated now but it runs counter strike and BF2 smooth. My PC building days are kinda over now ....so busy with work. :thumbsdow
stevencrosbie 05-09-2007, 07:13 AM I bought a new Laptop? Does that count
HP Pavilion dv9000t
2 GHz Intel Dual Core
256 MB nVidia GeForce GO 7600
2Gigs Ram
320 Gigs HD (2x160 drives)
17 in HD Screen
HD DVD/RW CDRW
HDMI out....and all of that other jaz that comes w/ one of the new top of the line desktop replacements.
Nice computer, not as fast as y'all's, but I don't like being confined to a desk to use my computer.

ya i love how fast mine is, but it is kinda the definition of non portable. :thumbsdow
it is a task in its self just to cram it in my back seat. :lmao:
i would love to buy a cheap laptop for at work to work on my school stuff.

I got a laptop in the September (Dell 1705) time frame because I game on the go as well, same processor as yours, 256meg Nvidia 7900GT, 1 gig of ram (One day I will upgrade) 100gb 7200rpm HD, 17 in HD trubright screen, DVD+-R/RW, DVI out. It games alright but it cannot max out BF2 at 1600X1200. At 800X600 I can however. When playing on a big screen that extra detail really helps. But the laptop is really for only when I am on the go.
MessFeeder, it’s a big PSU but the SLI ready website said I should get it because I will upgrade my Processor in a year or two to a Quad, and throw in another 8800GTX in probably a year. That will eat up all the spare watts I am leaving right now (And allow 20% for safety of the hardware). When I tested it with my P3 Kill-A-Watt it is currently pulling 225watts idle, and when in a game is loading it peaked at 350 (Both raptors are run in raid so they go at the same time.). I could have gotten away with a 700, or even 650 but like with the video card, go big or go home. Also I got a deal from ClubIT.com where I got the Videocard (EVGA 8800GTX) and PSU (Thermaltake Toughpower 850) for 690 after 30 dollar Mail in Rebate (Which I got back yesterday). So really could not have got a better deal (back in March).
This system is highly upgradeable (Made sure of it) so rather than upgrading the whole system every 3 or so years I can upgrade parts. But alas even then I will probably throw this on my wife’s desk in 3 years and by something bigger…
As far as Battlefield 2142 goes, I borrowed a copy from EA :naughty: played it for about 2 days and decided I did not like it enough to leave BF2. It was good, just not good enough (Not much for future tech/mech). But I hear BF3 is coming out in the next year and that will probably make me jump. 3 Years is the longest I have ever spent playing one game (with this much of my time/resources). Once BF3 arrives I will have been on it for 4. And I wonder where all my spare time goes... :dunno:
stevencrosbie 05-09-2007, 12:51 PM Y'all have some powerful computers....
I got mine b/c I was tired of my 4 y/o Dell D600.....
I also do a lot of Patran/Nastran, and that old computer just couldn't take it anymore...
I have yet to play a game on this machine...I guess I could try it! The best part so far for me is the DVD burner. Been making DVD-a disks for the TL and enjoying the 5.1 surround sound for the first time!
thesteve151 05-09-2007, 01:51 PM solved my problem :lmao:
it dose not like my dual monitors. :thumbsdow
i have to leave the 2nd one off untill windows boots up, then turn it on and i am good to go
i have no clue why though. :dunno:
as for games i havent been playing much. half life 2, oblivion.
diablo and diablo II are my all time favorites. i can't wait for diablo III. if it ever comes out that is.

What's your nick on 2142? Maybe we can get a round going some time. Here are my stats. I know, my kdr sucks!
