Well, I'm on pace to do about 35K miles per year. Made me think: anyone out there do more? Who does the most?

i did about 42k last year (average since i had my car), but the year before that, ending 15AUG05, i did 49,500 miles.... :notworthy

i normally do about 40-45k a year, regardless of repair bills.... one of these years, i'll get 50k a year.....

The oldest that car can be is ~4 1/2 years old at the time of that post...45K a year.

Count me out :( I'm only doing about 7K a year now, and that's split between the two cars = Accord 2K ish, ZX does the rest.. :)

In the late 70's -- early 80's I was doing well over 1,000 miles a week.. :paranoid:

I seriously doubt I could that in todays traffic.. :(

Back in the late '90's, after my "ex" moved 2 hours away (and the judge said I had to do all the driving to visit/pick-up my son), I was racking up 44k to 50k miles per year. I drove an '82 Datsun pick up to over 200k miles and also drove a couple of Civics a lot of miles (including a 50 mpg '92 Civic VX, and a 46 mpg '98 Civic HX).

But I've moved closer to my son and with job location changes and all, I'm only driving about 15k-16k miles per year. Which is one reason I rationalized buying my previous car, a BMW 540i 6-speed.... :naughty:

Good Gosh. I remember those days. I used to travel extensively when I first started working for the railroad. My wife and I are expecting our 1st (son) and I decided to bid a job a little closer to home.

Trips to Kansas, Oklahoma, El Paso (from Houston area) every other week add up quick.

I guess maybe I could throw in a little twist, or qualification here.

Who is driving the most of *their own* miles? That is, not company miles, or a company-owned car, or a company-sponsored car, or a car driven primarily or a significant amount for business. We know those cars rack up a lot of miles.

So perhaps another way to say it is who is driving their car the most miles on personal business or pleasure, e.g. long commute, trips to the coast, gotta go see Grandma Myrtle in Schenectady every weekend, etc.

My 35K are mostly due to a 100 mile rt commute every day. At 27-28 mpg and about $3.00/gallon for gas, it costs me about $55/week for gasoline. :(

Where the heck do you guys find time to drive so much?!

My friend has a 00 Civic DX, he put 60K a year on it for the first 2 1/2 years and not for business (heck half the time he didn't have a job :dunno: )

Work man, work. Thats all I did was travel the 1st 3 years of my railroad career. Unlike your friend, I racked em' up because of work.

Dang, you guys/gals drive a lot. I'm barely at 6939 since July 14, 2006. Looks like I'll be averaging about 8,000 - 8,500 miles per year. So that means I lose this contest.

But we win in resale value.

My miles will greatly increase this summer as all of my miles are pleasure miles. No commute for me!

+2 on the excessive work travel, mostly to OEM assembly plants, plants that belong to my company and on occasion I travel to one of our suppliers.

I could take a company car on the trips but, I get paid for mileage so it all evens out.

But wouldn't you also get paid for mileage on the company car too? If so, then you're racking up miles on your car for nothing. Putting the miles on the company car would cut down on the wear and tear on your car.

If, on the other hand, you don't get paid for mileage on the company car, that would suck since you're using it for work related trips.

I've put 9500 miles on the Accord in 3 months, but the car missed out on a couple of trips due to not being broken in and ready for long highway trips at a steady speed. It will be up to 12,000 miles in a little over 2 weeks from now.

I own an inventory auditing company in the tiny state of Montana, and the car is slated to be driven about 3200 miles per month for this purpose; along with being the 'commuter of choice' for my wife (~est. 600 miles/mo) when I'm not out of town with the car.

So about 45,000 per year. The car will be given to our 12-year-old son in 5 years.

If I drive a company car I pay for the gas used on the company credit card, if I use my car I pay upfront out of pocket for the gas but I am reimbursed $0.36 a mile on my next pay. So I am actually getting paid for the wear and tear and gas, PLUS I get the enjoyment of being in my car!

You should check with accounting, the federal reimbursement rate is at .485/mi now...

We have had the debate here where I work, and the only real downside to driving your own car is the insurance coverage. This has happened on several occasions, an employee will go out on company time and hit a deer or have another similarly minor accident. Now if they were in a company/rental car (the recommended way to travel) they could just dust their hands off and walk away. In a personal car, they rely on their own insurance meaning if they had a $500 deductible for the incident, c'est la vie!

Of course, I throw caution to the wind since I can drive my old saturn that gets ~35mpg and pocket probably $.30 per mile after I account for gas and oil, and all the while not worry about the condition of the car. Thats basically getting paid $22/hr if you can keep it at 75mph!

same goes for me as well.... i have a 1/4 mile commute during the day....

i drive more miles by going to get gas and mt dew at the gas station....

i used to swap trips b/w pittsburgh and norfolk every week, if i was able to afford it.....

plus, going to NC for the wknd as well, if we felt like it, and driving an hour for dinner about every time that i went down there.... closest buffalo wild wings to my friend bryan is in richmond....

So unless I misunderstand anyone (smithski, turbeau, et al), you drive your cars on business. Not just "commuting" per se, but actually for direct business purposes...correct? If not, what is the length and frequency of your commute, if you have a regular one. Like I said, mine is 100 miles rt 5 days/week, with a 360 mile rt commute usually 2-3 times per month. I drive it very little on the weekend...like to let her rest.

As for mileage reimbursement, my company currently pays $0.485 per mile on my trips to Indy. And no, you can't double-dip, as MotorCity said. It's either/or. You drive a company car, if available, and they buy the gas. Or you drive your own car and get the aforementioned mileage reimbursement.

When it comes to winning on resale value, that's true if you intend to sell it or trade it in. But if you plan to keep it "forever" (like me), then it's a non-factor. Moreover, if you look at the price you paid for your car and divide it by the number of miles you "get" to drive it, then I will pay much less per mile than most people. :D (Not the costs to operate, just the purchase costs per mile driven.)

Like MotorCity, I look at driving my car as a pleasure, so the more miles the better, especially since I won't be getting rid of it, unless it gets wrecked or blows up, of course.

About 30-35k per year. Most of the mileage is from commuting nearly 100 miles to/from school and out of town/state traveling. I used to do about 50-55k in the 96 Accord when I lived in Michigan.

WOW, you are right!!! I checked my Travel & Expense report and it sure enough has been auto calculating my mileage using $0.485...

Sounds like Kabong and I are on the same page because resale value is a non issue for me. With all the miles I drive I don't sell my vehicles when I am done, I just either give them to a family member or friend!

Wow 48.5 cents a mile I oughta get a job like that! My 99 Accord only cost 24 cents a mile including gas/insurance/reg/smog/maintenance AND depreciation. If I drive 50K a year I pocket $12K!

Company reimbursement is great, Consider you are able to drive 40,000 for your company in your own car at 0.48 cents per mile 40,000 x 0.48 =$19,200.
You basically got your money back after 40,000 miles.

Since I bought the Accord about a year ago I've put about 18,000 miles on it.

To figure out my average miles per year I'd have to figure out how much I've driven the Metro, this past year. The Metro is my daily driver. I use it to drive to school, work, and dance Monday to Friday. I average around 85-95 miles a day. No wonder that I have to fill the gas tank every 3 days.

After I get home I'll add up how many miles I've driven the Accord and the Metro this past year. I'm guessing somewhere around 30,000 miles.

Well I calculated it for the Metro. In the past year I've driven the Metro about 13,134.4 miles. I've driven the Accord about 18,053.5 (not sure, haven't calculated the last fill up in, yet).

13,134.4 + 18,053.5 = 31,187.9 miles this past year (End of May 2006-end of May 2007). Eek!

Driving the Metro and Accord, (not counting my mom's Accord, her Civic, or the Odyssey)
2007 I've driven about 13,617.1 miles combined. (3rd year of college)
2006 I drove the a combined 24,618.1 miles. (2nd year of college - 3rd year of college)
2005 I drove about 11,004.9 miles (1st year of college - 2nd year of college)
2004 I drove about 9,402.8 miles (senior - 1st year of college)
2003 I drove about 5,832.3 miles (Junior - senior year of high school)

Geez, I sure do drive a lot!
