View Full Version : New Brake Parts Poll
jeffmeden 05-16-2007, 06:52 AM My brakes are starting to chirp, so it's time to pick out a suitable replacement/upgrade for them. Buying the car used I dont know what kind they are or how old they are, but they have at least 18 months and 20k miles on them. The front pads are in good shape but the rotors are a little warped, the rears are the ones chirping on me, and I figured I would just replace them all at once to get it over with. I am leaning toward just getting 'duralast' premium parts from Autozone which are ceramic pads and decent rotors. The other similar option is to get Akebono pads from an e-tailer like tirerack. Its not really worth it to buy rotors online unless they are super cheap or so awesome that I just have to have them.
I am asking for advice on what brand and type you all have been happy or sad with. After searching for some specific items, I didn't turn up much so bring on the poll!
VTECaddict 05-16-2007, 11:43 AM havent changed them myself yet (i only have like 10500 miles) but i constantly hear good things about brembo blank rotors with hawk hps pads.
namegoeshere 05-16-2007, 12:15 PM "You have to change those?" and "I brake like Fred Flintstone" are in the lead. :lmao:

....not to screw everything up by being (gasp!) serious: but straight away now - - - - at 34.5k the OEM's are still about 80%..............
..to some it's called driving alertly (you don't speed up to a stoplite(sign)......
..all the best...
..ez..
Amanda Moen 05-31-2007, 02:19 PM I know very little about this but I'll put in my thoughts.
What style of driving do you do? Do you just daily drive your car, or does it ever see any track time? (ie, autocross, lapping days, 1/4 drags, etc)
I think knowing that information will help to narrow down the selection.
I bought my Accord with less than 35,000 miles on it. I'm guessing that my dealership, or the previous owner, put brand new brake pads on it around the 34,000 mile mark. Contrary to everyone's complaints about the brakes not being big enough for the 6MT, when I did a driving school last month my instructor said I had really good brakes, and my car was extremely stable.
princess 05-31-2007, 04:24 PM Although I marked the "stopping is for quitters".... we have replaced the pads with OEM ones. They weren't worn out yet, the rotors needed to be turned & he always puts new ones one when he does that. I'd likely be on the first roundof pads if it weren't for the rotors. We always have put Honda ones on Hondas because many aftermarket don't have the built in wear indicators.
I'm now over 25K in nearly 4 years of having her. :)

Your car is going to be a real creampuff to whoever buys it when you get that 'dream' RL. :naughty: :)
You drive about as much as I do.
princess 05-31-2007, 05:15 PM I can't believe how long we've had her!! It will be 4 years on Aug 9th! If we don't get some Disneyland trips in, it will easily be '08 before she sees 30K!! :paranoid: Disneyland put 1K per trip. So about half her miles have been going up & down I-5!! :lmao: That means she's got 50-50 freeway & in town!!! :D
The dealer teased me about never driving the '02 when we traded it in to get this one. It had 13K in 2 years. So I guess I'm pretty consistant. When we first get them we put on a chunk of miles. So the first 5K racks up faster than the rest.

Mom has had her CRV for just over a year now and it just turned 11,000 miles. I had nearly 33,000 on the 06 Accord within the first year (and according to the local Honda service dept., the car needed rear brake pads) I don't expect to put as many miles on the 07 since I've got the two vehicles now, but I'll still have close to 100,000 on it in four years...

Our cars have the same birthday/purchase date! According to my owner's card my Accord was purchased on August 9th, 2003.
I vote for more DisneyLand trips! I love DisneyLand!
princess 06-01-2007, 08:12 AM Let's go!! (I wish). I'm "grounded" from there until I'm all healed up! :thumbsdow

Well, it could be worse. You could live in LA county, Ventura county, Orange county, etc. That would be so much worse if you lived within an hour driving distance from DisneyLand. That would be cruel and unusual punishment. It'd be like forcing me to do the Atkins diet. Bring on the carbs!
I know that I will be going to DisneyLand next President's Day weekend. But I'm going to try and get down there at least once before then.
I call for a DisneyLand trip after you're healed and no longer grounded.
Now back on topic. :P
princess 06-03-2007, 08:12 PM THAT would be worse!!
When I'm at the parks, it's still a bit of torture.... I'm a low-carber & it's hard to pass up those churros!! :D
One of the good things about I-5 is that before we hit the traffic, we can test those rotors. I can drive around home & never know how bad they are. (we've caught them before they make noise) A light brake on a downhill will tell you right away that there's a problem!! :paranoid:
Isn't Disneyland ALWAYS on topic??? :lmao: I've done so many trips there that I can make a car story out of nearly any thread & mention the parks!!!
From what I've heard OEM pads can last 50K easy if under the right driving conditions. I've also heard after market can be noisier. :dunno: I don't have first hand experience with that. The kids have had other brands. Whatever cheapest. Since they all drive manuals they haven't needed many brake changes.
dohcivtec 06-03-2007, 08:31 PM DRIVE ACCORD CLUB MEET AT DLAND PARKINGLOT! 5TH FLOOR MICKEY MOUSE! sike
princess 06-03-2007, 08:48 PM   Sounds good to me.....but it may have to wait till Fall! :D
jeffmeden 06-04-2007, 08:25 AM I don't drive it too hard, especially with the brake noise getting worse it's like a little reminder every time i hit the pedal 'chirp chirp dont drive like an ass chirp chirp chirp'... that and with gas prices through the roof I have been making a noble effort to do less needless accel/decel and generally drive more relaxed. I put on about 20k/yr so I need pads/rotors that will stay smooth for a long time. Thanks for the input, all!
