Report: Honda To Pull Plug on Accord Hybrid
Date posted: 06-04-2007

TOKYO — In what may signal a major strategy shift by Honda, the Japanese automaker will phase out the gas-electric version of its Accord next year and replace it with a clean diesel, according to the Nikkei.

The move is expected to reflect Honda's future emphasis on clean diesels, in contrast to Toyota's focus on hybrids. The report says Honda will offer clean diesel options in its CR-V and Odyssey minivan as well.

In North America, Honda apparently will only offer hybrid systems in its smallest vehicles, including the Civic and a Fit-based subcompact car.

Inside Line has learned from supplier sources that the upcoming Accord diesel is likely to be a torquey 2.5-liter unit that gets 45 mpg on the highway and is inspired by diesels from Fiat and Renault. Honda is also said to be working on multiple-displacement diesels for the U.S. market. The move toward diesels by Honda is seen as a very significant step that may ultimately rewrite the book on diesels, since Honda is widely viewed as a leader in powertrain engineering. The Accord diesel is also expected to help Honda regain sales momentum that it has lost to Toyota in the alt-fuel fight.

The Accord Hybrid puts a premium on performance above fuel economy and is priced nearly $4,000 more than a conventional model. The automaker sold approximately 5,600 Accord Hybrid models last year, compared with more than 31,000 hybrid Civics. Toyota sold nearly 107,000 Prius hybrids in 2006.

What this means to you: Your next alt-fuel Honda may be a diesel.

I'm not surprised. Since the Euro Accords get a diesel...on a world platform, I'm sure the diesel models will eventually migrate to the states. On top of that, Accord Hybrids aren't really in for the gas savings, but for performance, which isn't that much more than a normal V6, IMO. Hence the lackluster sales performance for Honda compared to 100k+ Priuses in 2006. You know, I'd rather get a diesel than a hybrid. At least we won't have batteries to worry about. Plus diesels are very durable and torquey too!

...knew they had the diesel in the works. Was hoping (but not expecting) for a diesel hybrid. One step at a time I guess.

Diesel is almost 40 cents a gallon cheaper than gasoline now. Makes sense if the price isn't too high.

Everyone please go buy a diesel so gasoline will be cheaper. :lmao: I kid...

I would think that if demand for diesel went up so would prices. Greedy industrial world!

It hasn't been mentioned so far, but the Honda diesel on sale here is NOT available with an auto gearbox.. Do members think that will that have much effect on US sales?

45 MPG is about ave for med-large soloon car with a 2litre Diesel here, and being a new design of low compression diesel engine, the car doesn't seem to have taken off very well, in fact, personaly I have yet to see one on our roads. Maybe there is more info available about production-sales figures on the net someplace... :dunno:

>>> I would think that if demand for diesel went up so would prices. Greedy industrial world!<<<

Good guess lol.. diesel is now slightly more expensive than petrol here, due solely to demand.. (tax revenue).. :(

If we get a diesel Accord here and Honda still knows how to sell a car they will remember that Americans like their autoboxes, and will offer one.

Bearing in mind the amount of trouble Honda have had making a decent autobox for there 6 cyl engine, how much confidence have you got in them making one that can cope with the much bigger torque put out by a diesel engine? Would you buy one?. :paranoid:

Personaly, if Honda do make a diesel-auto, then I wouldn't buy one untill I had seen at least a few (preferably a lot!) manage 100K+ with no problems.. :naughty:
