View Full Version : Replacing Fog lens with Lexan?
drcookie 06-01-2007, 12:18 PM Folks,
I searched and did not come out with any info I was looking for.
Like other members in this forum, I also have a cracked fog len on driver side and replacing the whole housing is very expensive.
I also have a Acura TL-S with fog lights with the same problem. However, I managed to replace the cracked fog lens on the Acura with Lexan plastic sheet.
Before I start removing my fog light on the Honda and try to figure out if it could be done the same way, I would like to see if anyone has tried it. Am I going to be the guinea pig on this little project?
Please comment.
Foreign_Wide 06-01-2007, 02:52 PM Just my two cents
Why not put a lexan sheet in front of the glass lens?
drcookie 06-01-2007, 03:46 PM Because the len is already cracked/broken.
drcookie 06-04-2007, 10:26 PM Well, since no one responded, I went ahead and removed my cracked fog light off last weekend and started my little project to replace the len. It came out pretty fine except I think I used too much sealant. :)
Attached are some pics on the cracked len (before) and after I replaced it with polycarbonate sheet (equavalent to Lexan).
Total cost: approximately $10.
Total time taken: 2 hours to clean, cut and fit and 8 hours for the sealant to cure.

Seeing as that the fogs get EXTREMELY hot, let me know if the plastic melts...
If it does, i suggest spending the money for a replacement fog ($94.74 @ handa-accessories.com (http://www.handa-accessories.com/accext03.html) -or- a $64 eBay (http://motors.search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&catref=C6&from=R10&fstype=1&mppfqy=03+accord+sedan+fog&satitle=03+accord+sedan+fog&sacat=6000%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=ZIP%2FPostal&sabfmts=1&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1) kit) and using protective headlight film from xpel.com (http://www.xpel.com)...
That will put an end to your problems, permanently... (info here: www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11210 (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=11210))
drcookie 06-06-2007, 01:07 PM I have replaced the lens on my TL-S fog lights for more than a year now and so far so good (keep my fingers crossed) :)
Definately go for the good quality lexan or polycarbonated plastics sheet since it is a lot durable to scraches and has high melting point.
If you use acrylic plastic sheet, that thing will fade in no time.
lmajthomas 06-13-2007, 12:13 AM why don't you just get on ebay and pick up another set for 50$

i suggested the same, but i assume it was because:
1.) they only spent $10 for their polycarbonate sheet replacement...
2.) they were previously sucessful using this method an earlier vehicle...
& 3.) they didn't want to worry about the fog cracking again...

I did that and the replacement was also broken within 10k miles, and that's using xpel film on it!
I'm thinking I'll be going with the poly diy lense too at this point.
drcookie 06-14-2007, 09:36 AM Ditto. If you replace with another glass fog lens, you are destined to repeat the history. I have been running the fog lights for hours without melting the polycarbonated sheet. This definately saves you a lot of money and if it was done right, it should last for some time. :D

ahhh!!! are you serious??? you're the one that recommended the Xpel film to me!!! LOL!!! did you leave enough of a ring around the edge to dissipate the heat??? Oh well, hopefully i get lucky... either way, 10k is waaay better than the 500mi's it took to break without it!!!
sy272004 07-13-2007, 09:07 PM im gona use it for my custome fogs. even though my dad saying i shouldnt do that. but dont wana chip my projectors
Prix03GT 07-25-2007, 09:27 AM I have had expel on two cars and so far no cracked fogs. I run 95 every day for 20 miles.....

same here, so far... i am showing some "burning" on the plastic though... i must have drove with them on in the daytime again!!! oops!!! i've got quite a bit of backup film though... it does boast a gurantee, but for the price, i'm not going through the hassle...
