2008 Honda Accord Caught in the Desert
By Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor

Date posted: 07-10-2007

In a few short months, we'll have all the information we could possibly want about the 2008 Honda Accord coupe and sedan. It's set to go on sale this fall, so even though we managed to catch a few prototypes conducting hot-weather testing in the California desert, most of the major details are already set in stone.

We know for sure that the hybrid model is gone. Slow sales of the performance-oriented hybrid made it a one-generation wonder, so the top-of-the-line Accord for 2008 will carry a conventional gasoline-fueled V6. We're expecting power levels somewhere north of 260 horses, so this Accord will be one of the faster family sedans in the segment.

Honda isn't forgetting its fuel-efficiency mission statement, however, so the Accord V6 is likely to feature a cylinder-deactivation system. It shuts down half the cylinders under light loads to improve fuel economy. Combined with a six-speed manual transmission, the Accord V6 could maintain its fuel-economy rating of 30 mpg highway even under the revised EPA guidelines for 2008. If the automatic transmission goes from five to six gears as we expect, even the V6 automatic models might get close to 30 mpg on the highway.

Then again, if fuel mileage is your primary concern, a four-cylinder Accord is the way to go. The base Accord will get a slight bump to anywhere between 170 and 180 horsepower, but the focus will remain on fuel-efficiency. At the same time, whatever gains that are made will be offset by the new EPA procedures, so expect to see the 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway rating of the current model drop a notch or two.

If you're after a serious high-mileage Accord, you might want to put off your purchase for a few years. Honda is working on a diesel-powered model for the U.S. market that will beat the four-cylinder gasoline engine's numbers by a wide margin. And with lots of torque, the diesel will drive better, too. Honda is still working on making it clean enough to meet tough U.S. emissions regulations, but we're expecting it to happen within the next several years.

The 2008 Honda Accord will probably incorporate all the things you expect — slightly more interior room, a quieter and more refined cabin, plus new technology like a navigation system with integrated traffic maps. And as you can see from the pictures, its styling remains conservative in every respect with a little extra chrome its only extravagance.

I was wondering when NavTraffic was coming to the Accord!

I wonder if it has Bluetooth?

The only problem with all those technologies, is driver distraction. But its all great for communication on the road.

That is the same impression that I got. Hopefully it will be more exciting when it arrives without the tape in the fall.

Since when has a new accord model been not boring looking? To me, they were all pretty boring. I liked the 6th generation coupes rear but the front was pretty boring. I like the over all design of the 7th gen coupe, but the front seems boring as well. Lip really helps.

I agree.

It's a family sedan, and family sedan based coupe.

If anything, the Mazda 6 and Ford Fusion win for sportiness, and handling, but I think the Accord is the most fun to drive.

Ford Fusion :thumbsdow

Way too much chrome on the front end, and the tails look terrible too.

I was thinking Mazda = Sporty looking, but they both handle incredibly well. Road Huggers

I totally disagree and IMO they were never, ever as boring as this thing appears to be.

From this video it does look better in white, though, and it may be better in person...I'll have to make my final judgment when I see it.

The Edmonds review says............

"......Accord V6 could maintain its fuel-economy rating of 30 mpg highway even under the revised EPA guidelines for 2008................so the Accord V6 is likely to feature a cylinder-deactivation system. It shuts down half the cylinders under light loads to improve fuel economy.............."

.....cruising thru Pilot and Odessey boards (VCM is already in use on some models) - - I get a rough guestimate that an extra 2 to 4 mpg can result from heads up application of the cylinder deact. feature.........

I'll say it again: Honda engineers probably graduated in the top 5%.............

..best, ez..

To me the Coupes' rear cabin / windows are looking a bit Audi TT like .. I dig the way the dual exhaust looks .. the front and side view is nice but looks less Honda-unique to me, almost more BMW 32*i like.

Funny how these companies seem to adopt parts of other popular selling cars into their looks .. you'd think they would want more brand identity by keeping a more unique look rather than less. In my opinion, the new Hyundai and Camry 4 door sedans are creeping towards being much more Accord like :p while in the 2008 preview pictures Honda seems to be creeping more towards other manufacturers' looks.

It looks alright but I'm an 80's baby and that looks kinda like an old people car.

I wonder if a hard drive will be optional (or standard on the EX-V6) ? Possibly a 32GB SSD for your music library/navigation maps with two USB ports to transfer your music from home by portable flash or hard drive. Music management software installed on the SSD could allow you to browse your music library and create new playlists. Honda could strike a deal with Apple to use iTunes. You could also download new map updates from a secure server for free or minimal fee and transfer them to the SSD by portable drive.

Maybe I'm dreaming too much, but other manufacturers are beginning to add hard drives to their vehicles so it's possible.
