Hi, I drive a 1997 honda accord v6 and a few weeks ago, my tachometer just to go crazy going from 1,000rpm to 4,000rpm and it would go constantly BUT it doesnt affect the engine while it constantly rev from 1k to 4k. So at first i thought it was just the tach going out but then at times, i feel my engine hesitating to accelerate and what not. I am not sure at all what the problem is and would appreciate it if you guys can help me out. Thanks.

Oh yeah, there is no vacuum leak. I heard that it could be the IAC valve or hte o2 sensor?

Thanks For The Help.

I would take it to someplace like Autozone to see if there are any codes stored to help narrow down the possible problems.

To be clear: The tach jumps around but the engine isn't really changing its rpms?

Yeah, I took it to autozone the other day to get a code for it and they said it passed with nothing so that is what made me even more confused. And yes, the tach basically jumps around and goes crazy but it doesnt effect the engine's rpm so that is why i thought the tach was just broken. Oh and i dont know if this is from the same problem but my friends who drive behind me says that sometimes when i accelerate, there is like a gray/blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Thanks for the help

i'm wondering if the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) would affect the tach, but not the speedo, in this case??? :dunno:

I recently quit my job at a Honda shop, but there was a 1995 Accord V6 that came in with an 'erratic' tach, but it didn't effect the performance. The fix was a $800.00 wiring harness; obviously, the customer declined repair.

But if yours is really effecting performance, then you need to get that looked into.

Thank you for all the replies, i have been asking around and two of my buddies (one with an accord and one with a prelude). they said that the same thing happened to them, the rpm messing up and the hesitation of the vehicle. they said they changed the ecu and it was fixed. Any inputs before i go out and spend a lot of money on somethign that might not fix the problem. thanks

How about get a diagnosis.

That would be the best advice anyone could give. 1 hour of dealer labor could save you alot of money.

how would i go and get one. Just go to the dealership and ask for a diagnosis and how much do you think it would cost?

Depends on the dealer. Some charge a half hour labor & some a full hour.:dunno:
