Hey guys, last night I went to a party and ended up driving into the corner of a sewer - after i got out i could hear the air streaming from my tire. so i spent the first half hour of the party changing my tire.
Now I've got a predicament as to what i should do. My car (06 Accord LX) has like 38,000 miles on it. My original tires are on there plus a spare now - they are Bridgestone Turanza EL41s which didn't score all that well on Tirerack.com. They still have a bit of tread left though, probably about 75-80% worn.
After some reseach I found Michelin Pilot Exacto ASs which scored top in the hi performance all season tire. My tires now are performance touring i believe.
My question is, should I replace all 4 now so i have a whole new set, or should i save some money and replace only 2 with the Pilot Exactos even though its a different tire category? If I do 2 now then the treadwear will be a lot different from the front set to the back set.
also, does anybody have experience with the Pilot Exactos?
Thanks a lot

consider how worn they are, i would replace them with a whole new set of tires.... :)

i do not have experience with the pilot's..... sorry....

I would replace all 4 with the Bridgestone Potenza RE960 Pole Positions. I don't have personal experience with them, but everyone raves about them. They look to be a great tire..

Something else to look into.

Just replace all 4. If money's tight right now, replace 2 now and then the other 2 when the tires need to be rotated in 5,000 miles or so. Oh, and put the 2 new tires up front.

I agree with the others, replace all 4 if you can afford it now. If not maybe you can get a used Bridgestone Turanza EL41 to hold you over until you're ready to replace them.

Thanks guys. Have you guys ever bought used tires? Where do you go to get used tires, the dump?
I guess you'd have to put it on yourself, since no shops would put it on, right?

there are used tire shops, they stock tons of used tires, and they will put them on for you when you buy them.:thmsup:look it up in the yellow pages.

and my friend used to buy used tires, and they were fine.
almost all of them are off of wrecked cars, so they are mostly fairly new tires.

I have 4 Pilot Exalto A/S stock size. If you mainly looking for handling, steering and road feel it is as good as the ratings on tirerack.com. Its is leagues better in this regard than my old Falken St-115 which is a performance tire. As far as road noise I really cant tell the difference between my Exaltos and other tires I have had. My ears are not that picky with tire noise.

i got used tires on my van before. not too bad. i paid 20 bucks per tire installed or 25. i forgot because i had to replace 2 tires. came out to 40 or 50. however, if one tire is replaced and the other has a higher tread, then itll cause your steering to drift to the side a little.

Cool, thanks guys. I called a used tire place today and it sounds pretty decent - $30-35 for the tire, and $10 to put it on and balance it. But I asked them if they have my exact kind of tire and he acted like it didn't matter much and that they would "match it up." They would match up the treadwear also. You guys think its fine to have one tire not the same model - just until they all wear out in about 15,000 miles?
the only reason I'm a little hesitant is b/c we are going on a roadtrip next weekend. But I'd hate to spend $400-500 when i can keep my tires now for another 15,000 miles.

Generally, re-mounting low profile tires is not recommended. There is so little flex in the tire wall that that the tire is damaged.

I learned this from the plant manager for a company that does OEM tire mounting for BMW. Does anyone have any facts to shed more light on this?

You said your tires are 80% worn. So the remaining 20% of tread life is worth about $90. Since you would spend $40 on a used tire, you are saving $50. Get the new tires! (Maybe the used tire place will give you a few bucks for the 3 old tires ???)
