View Full Version : Just got my 04 Accord, and it's a fixer-upper

Just got my new (in my own mind) Accord, and it needs some minor work done to it.

It's got 60k miles, so I'm guessing it'd be a good idea to take it in for the 60k maintenance. What does the dealership do and how much usually should it be if there's no major problems?

The side mirror is cracked on the arm and kind of out of the socket...if I buy a new mirror, how much would it usually be to have something that small painted and mounted on?

The passenger's side A/C knob is cracked and still works, it just doesn't know how to stop itself from turning. Can I just buy a new knob or do I need a whole new panel or whole front radio/AC unit?

The driver's side turn blinker bulb is burned out. I bought the bulb today, and was wondering if a simple, non-mechanical guy like myself can replace it? I have no tools besides a flathead and Philips screwdriver. :dunno:

The driver's side map light is burnt out, how easy or hard is that to replace? I'm thinking the plastic cover just pops out...hopefully.

Lastly, and I'm sure I have no chance of fixing it myself, is that the passenger's side power lock doesn't work at all. I have to manually lock and unlock on that side. Am I probably just looking at a new power lock device?

Also, not much of a problem, but it sounds like it struggles to crank on hot starts...like if I turn it off to wash my car at the wash, and then crank it back up 10 minutes later, it sounds strange, but does start. Is this normal?

Thanks for any pointers you guys have! Can't wait to get this baby in better condition!

Edit: Also one more thing! When turning slightly, and having the wheel bring itself back to straight, it kinda shakes back to straight, like not fluidly. Is this normal, or is there something to check like CVs, power steering fluid (??), or maybe the alignment is off?

you should be able to change the bulbs yourself, without any tools,
you could probable go to a junkyard, and get a mirror in your color:dunno:
and first thing you should do is to check all the fluid levels:yes:i do that before i even buy the car:paranoid:

the power lock sounds like it is just out, they are hard to get to in my 97, and probably even harder in yours, also check in a junkyard for that part, or just go to a few shops and get quotes.

these should get you started.

I'm not sure about the AC knob.

I didn't know if you have a L4 or a V6...if it's a V6, there's a bulletin on the "long crank".

You need to check for bubbles in the power steering fluid. It sounds like it's either low or has air in it.:dunno:

Yes it's the V6. I'm gonna hunt the bulletin now!

the steering sounds like maybe a tire or mounting issue. does the steering wheel wobble in relation to front wheel rpm? any worse in one direction than the other?

Upon further inspection, it definitely could be an alignment issue. My steering wheel is slightly facing 11 'o clock when I'm going straight, so it definitely needs an alignment. There is no wobble or anything on the wheel at any other time, only when I'm making a very slight turn and letting it go back to straight.

I am, in fact, a victim of the "long crank." Letting the fuel pump engage for the 6 beeps has remedied the problem, though. So that's awesome.

Edit: I also found a very in-depth look at the 60k Honda maintenance, and made a list for my mechanic to carry out so I don't have to go to a dealership here:

Replaced the map light tonight, very painless process... NO TOOLS REQUIRED!

I'm taking my car back to the dealership next week since their limited service garage is capable of putting in the turn signal bulb for me. I'm gonna live with the power lock for now since I don't think it's worth the money quite yet.

In regards to the long crank and after further research, it seems that my car doesn't match those symptoms. It sometimes completely quits cranking and fails to start, and for awhile, it would start then immediately start grinding the ignition, like the noise it makes when you crank an already started car.

Here's the weird part! It stopped doing it! The only thing I can think of, is that it only does this when it's below half a tank of gas. I'll ride out this current tank of gas and see when it starts acting up again.

So I'm assuming this isn't the long crank problem!
