i was 2 miles from my exit, after driving all night from philly.....

i looked down for a split second (i know, sounds cliche), and when i looked back up, it was already too late. i hit a deer.

after trying to swerve and avoid it, i first nearly hit the concrete barrier on my left, then overcorrecting and nearly slamming into the gaurd rail to my right.

i called the authorities after i got out of the car, still very shaken up, and reported it. they told me that it was not reportable due to no injuries.

i am very lucky that i was not injured. i hit the thing at 70mph in the slow lane. the right third of thw windshield is smashed in pretty good, and i lost my passenger side mirror. a little bit of body damage to the front pass. door, but all in all, got her home safely....

the funny thing about all this??? my ducttaped bumper stayed on the whole time; didn't budge..... :lmao:

new wndshield is going to cost me about $225 OTD to fix.

feel free to comment if you like...

stiller~swerving to avoid deer=bad idea. even when you don't loose control at all, it still leaves you at risk (aka-go search for the pics of my coupeafter being hit by others trying to avoid the deer after i safely swerved to avoid it.....)

you mean you somehow still managed to not put your car out of it's misery??? how in the world????? man, that car is going to have some stories to tell when it is put to rest! :lmao:

I think "The Boss" above is telling you to get rid of that car!
I thank HIM that you were not injured but feel sorry for the deer, of course. Now you are forced to make a move....DO SO! Impossible due to monetary constraints? It may seem so but there is a way, somehow. Figure it out and go for it. It's time to move on to another ride.

see, the way stiller sees it is that since he was spared and the car can still be driven, it's another sign to keep the car! ;) nothing wrong with his opinion on it. (though i'd have ditched the car ages ago!) but there was a time when i wanted to rehab an 84 accord sedan and keep it running..... not *quite* as bad as stillers, but i know how hard it was to see it go without giving it another chance.

stevel

so the answer is retire the car, but keep it within possession. store it somewhere for personal reasons, but stop driving it. by all means, let the car rest.

I don't mean to offend but you nor anyone here knows how Stiller feels at this time. What you would have done or what I would have done means nothing. No one here knows the restrictions he has to live with nor have you ever been in the military and can not posssibly understand what it's like or the pay scale. My gut tells me he is going through a lot more than any of us will ever know right now. Cut the man some slack! If we get crossways with this topic (I hope not and I don't want to) then so be it. Allow the man to make his own decisions.

oh, rtf, i think you misread my post (maybe i misread yours to begin with... :dunno: )

i'll leave it at that so as not to turn stiller's deer/car issues into another discussion on other things. just please understand that i wasn't meaning anything bad at all! i was suggesting to you that he may be more attached to that car despite whether or not he can afford to replace it and now he has one more reason to keep it (i went thru a period of that thought myself with my old coupe-where i was thinking, hey this car saved my life, there isn't much more you can ask of a car, so why should i "abandone" it?) i thought you were pushing more towards he should get another car despite the cost.... i think we royally misunderstood each other.....

Perhaps so and I apologize if I misread more into your post than was actually there. I'll accept blame since I am extremely defensive towards those serving our country since I'm a Vet. Old fart? Well Yeah, I am but I've earned the title. If you have not served you have no idea of what it's like.

I think we all (mostly) agree here........JOSH, dump the ride if you possibly can, it's time for some different wheels! As a matter of fact I will actually contribute towards another ride. NO payback required, I'll send what I can. PM me where to send it.

So I talked to Josh offline about this, and he assured me that a new windshield and some dents to remember the event by would be all that would impact his car ownership. Sometimes I think the car owns Stiller, instead of the other way around. :notworthy

The other comment - isn't the Deer now his property? I mean, in this rural neck of the woods, many people buy this sort of "road kill" for the meat!! Could have payed for the new windshield, or even a down payment on a new car!!

Still - glad he's OK.

Josh idk if you remember the chris you and I used to talk about (my chris), but he flipped his blazer over doing what you did; swerving to avoid the deer. No seat-belt on, and walked away after rolling 4 times. Crazy!

Just glad you're okay. Hopefully a new windshield will fit right and the frame around the window isn't bent. :dunno:

Be glad it wasn't a moose! They can be deadly!

A local Provincial Police Constable was killed a couple of years ago when his Crown Vic cruiser hit a young bull moose.

One of my customer Dave years ago hit a moose with his early 90' Acura Legend Coupe on the back country road, the airbag deployed to save him the initial impact, however the moose partially flew through the windshield still alive, and proceeded to thrash poor Dave still strapped in this seat by the seat belt, Dave was off work for 6 months due to the facial, chest and back injuries from the moose beating, his Legend was totalled from severe front end damage and all the blood and everything from the moose.......

The best story was a co-worker hitting a black bear on the back country road at night with his Mazda MPV, he said the bear stepped out into the road at the last minute and he didn't have time to swerve. He said he hit the bear on the head with the front corner of the MPV and took the head right off the bear, we didn't believe him until we saw tuffs of black bear hear still stuck between the busted front turn signal housing and the fender.......:jawdrop:

but hey, maybe there's an idea for those who want to help stiller.... anyone know of an older, used, still viable and running car that could be donated is direction??

Per the IRS rules, it has to be a recognized nonprofit with an IRS tax Id number before you can even consider donating it, and then the amount you can write off is only the wholesale value of the vehicle, because that's the "actual cash value" that most of the nonprofits realize with the donation. I donated the old Saab our sons used about 2 years ago, and I have all of this formal paperwork from the Diabetes Association about it, along with KBB and Edmunds trade-in values to support the deduction we used in our tax form. You have to be able to itemize to use this sort of deduction.

So - if Stiller knows of a local non-profit he could twist the arm of, it might be feasible! Otherwise, you'd be donating to our good friend out of the goodness of your heart!

unless you can go through somewhere you can trust to make sure the car got to him. my parents had done that with an old minivan of theirs. i believe it was a church, and it definitley was tax deductible through the route they used, but you couldn't legitimately say it was to go to this person or family or whatever. they had to trust that it would go to this specific family. it did. all parties were happy. in their case the value via the tax deduction was more worthwhile than trading it in or trying to sell it due to it's problems.

so there is hope of some sort!

Glad to see you're okay man. I had a 92 LX sedan and hit a deer myself. Not a fun experience, there was on-comin traffi and the right side had a steep drop off. Luckly it just clipped my headlight, so thats all I had to replace. It was about 120 at the time for just the part.

The deer unfortunately didn't make it, another driver shot it with a pistol he had in his glove box...I let him have the deer.

just a couple slight updates...

- windshield replaced for $187.25. the people matched a competitor's price, as promised....

- gotta get whatever film / streaks that are on there off tonight after work.... i got the barkeeper's friend stuff before work today. :)

- still have some glass shards left. everything needs wiped down. i did buy a duster to help out with that. the best procedure i believe is to take a bucket of water and a wet cloth and go that route, wiping everything down.

- hearing a slight thumping noise around 40mph.... not as bad as before, but it's still there. my guess is that it's from when i locked up my brakes and slid sideways, creating a flat spot on the tire. on a related note, there are skid marks on the SIDEWALL of the tire. think that i should replace it?

- also, while going straight on the highway yesterday, noticed that my steering feels a bit numb while center; it tends to wander a bit. think that i may have a busted tie rod?

thanks again for the responses.....

Sorry to hear about it, Josh.

But look at it this way - it's better it happened to an old car (beater) rather than a brand new one.

Around where I live is heavily infested with deer. They gallop across my front lawn on a daily basis.

I just drive carefully, be extra vigilant, but I figure one day a deer will cross my path and there won't be anything I'll be able to do about it.

By that time I'll have my truck with some nice iron bars in front of it, so the final score will be truck 1 deer 0.

Speaking of near misses, I had a few recently. One was a deer that started to cross the road, but I slowed down and gave him a blast of the good ol' Honda horn. Scared the bejeezus out of him, and he just ran away.

The other was a prius that was making an illegal U turn close to livingston mall. Luckily I have good brakes otherwise that new Prius would have had a nice big dent in it.
