View Full Version : C&D on the 08: "Accord we hardly know ya"

..."you're 32, going on 64"...
...there you have it, Car & Driver agrees with me. Honda kinda blew it with the new 8th gen in many areas. Its flat out too big now, they agree, I said the styling was a bit chunky and disjointed, their version says overstyled with too many differing elements. I said the new dash was too busy, bingo, thats what they think as well...
...oh well, they'll probably continue to sell like hotcakes, which is good for Honda, but I'll be hanging on to my '05 EXL and when the time comes for the next move I may have to see what the new TSX is like, this new Accord just has no appeal for me...
...go check it out for yourself: http://www.caranddriver.com/previews/13695/first-drive-2008-honda-accord.html
...don't think it'll get C&D's 'Car of The Year' this time around, maybe in the 9th gen, we'll all have to wait another 5 years...

but they make no mention of "...going on 64." Unless of course I'm completely missing something.>>>

Very end of the paragraph on page 4.

"Factor in the extra inch and a half of cabin width, and, Accord, we hardly know ya. You’re 32, going on 64."

...not really a "repost", there hasn't been a specific posting regarding the Car & Driver review, the C&D article was bunched in with a number of other mags, and most of you assumed it was going to be a favorable review - its not!!

I didn't see it as a bad first drive. And if one had thought anything else was going to happen with Accord. Well they were wrong. It is squarely aimed at Camry.

Wait until its road tested.

I just read it. Seemed pretty favorable to me. Though I dont know where the 268HP number was coming from around here an on other boards. C&D showed 273. Bedard seemed to be mostly focused on how large the 8th gen is. And that article was really just a first impression. We'll see how it does when they do a comparo and put it through its paces.

Also the up and comming Hynudai Genesis...which is suppose to be pretty huge.

They got that sedan to 60 in 5.8 seconds. Not bad. I'd like to see the 6 speed coupe results.

Wow the new Accord coupe is over 2 inches longer then the seventh gen version. And the sedan is over 3 inches longer. If this keeps going these cars will one day be as long as those old school limosines.

I'm not sure when they do "COTY" but I'm betting it's going to be a GM for once. 08 Pontiac G8. It's for sure going to be a good seller.

Yes it is. I think it will be an excellent car.

IMHO it's much better looking than the 7th generation accord. I'll probably purchase one in it's 2nd or 3rd year of production. I had been seriously thinking about jumping ship to either the Camry or Sonata.

Hi gang,
...ok, I figured my post would generate some 'reaction', and it did. It is my 'first reaction' point of view or opinion of the new Accord, and I do realize that its just C&D's opinion as well. We all have opinions and if we were all in complete agreement regarding everything it would be a rather dull world to live in...
...the writer of the first drive review is no spring chicken when it comes to these things, Patrick Bedard has been around the automotive world since the late sixties, so he knows a thing or two about what he's talking about...
...let me also state that this is kind of my first 'gut reaction' to the new car, but to put a bit of a spin on that, you have to know that my first 'gut reaction' to the car I now drive was very much the same, I didn't really like it at first. If you recall many referred to it as Honda's new Buick...
...I really do think the new Accord is getting too big, Honda is taking the new car into different waters this time around. Maybe that is a well planned out strategy, maybe they've changed the target group their aiming at. But I'm not alone in my view that the new car is getting too big, which is my greatest objection. The 7th gen is an almost perfect size, it carries four very comfortably, has decent luggage capacity, is very easy to park and still drives like a much smaller car, which endears it to a great many folk...
...as they say, time will tell, I know the new Accord will continue to sell well, but I'll have to wait to see how I feel after I've 'lived' with teh new design, and as many of you have pointed out, it may look a lot better in person, just like the 7th gen did in the end...

Nope. The 5th gen is shorter than the 4th, and the 6th is a bit longer than the 4th.

Ok and this point matters why?? Psyshack's point is still valid as the size of the Accord has definately gotten bigger over the generations. You said it yourself that the 6th is larger than the 4th, which means they are getting larger. One outlier in an otherwise obvious trend doesn't really matter much.

Nope. The 5th gen is shorter than the 4th, and the 6th is a bit longer than the 4th.

I have brochures for the '92 and '95model year.

LX Sedan (92): 185.2"
LX Sedan (95): 184.0"

so the 5th gen is only a wee bit shorter, however the total interior volume increased from 93.0 to 94.7 cubic feet (LX sans sunroof).

Also check out exactly how much the sedan has grown since the 7th gens first came out:

03-05: 189.5"
06-07: 191.1"
08+: 194.1"

Bigger means more than just length. Stop trying to antagonize people.

Based on the new Accord, the 4G TL will also grow in size, so I guess the next gen TSX will be higher on my list when the time comes to replace my '07 TL.

It appears, from a size perspective, the Accord will be in the Avalon/Maxima market. Hopefully when a new TSX arrives, it'll be between the Civic and Accord again.

I'm just not feeling this new effort, sorry Honda and I'm in the 50 something category for which some have said this was marketed.

...that's how I feel as well, which is why I started this thread. It would seem they've readjusted their target audience somewhat. I'm also in the 50 something category and really don't feel that comfy with a bigger car, mine has all the room I'll ever need, makes no sense to me to make it bigger, you can add more power without increasing size...
...even after reading all the opinions from others on how excited they are about the new car, I'm just not getting any thrills about it, sorry but I really don't like the new front end that much, it just looks too large, too out of proportion to the rest of the car, don't like the headlight bulges on the sedan, why couldn't they do them the same way as the coupe?
...my lease is up in less than two years, I'll have to see if the new car has grown on me, or if I need to look at something else from Honda's stable...

anyway,

I am in the 30-something group, but I don't think that the target age really drives the like or dislike of the car. Beauty, or lack thereof, is in the eye fo the beholder. Many target audiences don't end up being the ultimate customer of a vehicle. I for one am thrilled at the prospect of a larger, more powerful Accord . I moved from a Crown Victoria back into an Accord and sometimes, not often mind you, really miss the larger car. The fact that the new Accord is larger and yet more efficient in V6 Automatic format is a real "win-win" for me and my future passengers.

It seems to me that every generation gets bigger, better, more fuel efficient, more horsepower, more emmission free. I simply don't know how Honda does it.

Same way toyota and every other car manufacturer does it.
