View Full Version : Looks like a Saturn Ion
Yep, sure does! I am so disappointed in the new sedans looks. It is FUGLY in the pictures and I don't hold much hope for it looking better in person. The tall greenhouse, the low hoodline, the bland rear end...all Saturn Ionish.
I've been waiting, planning, hoping to get a the new Accord...that idea is gone! Out the window. How can I be seen in something so ugly and conservative looking?
The current Civic design is great. Stylish, forward thinking, hip, trendy, whatever you want to call it. Why oh why could the Accord not have looked so cool.
The Accord and Civic now look like parent and child vehicles. Hi I'm the parent, I drive and Accord. Hi I'm the kid, I drive the Civic. Used to be that the main delineation between the two was money. You have more money, you drive the Accord. Now you drive the Accord, you have less taste-it seems.
The saying goes "There's no accounting for taste." So please don't YOU get offended by MY opinion of the looks of the car. Sorry if the car of your dreams just dropped off my wishlist, don't flame me for my opinion. I am interested in others opinions...does anyone else hate the looks?
stiller fan 08-29-2007, 10:32 PM sed,
if i may here....
give the new design time.... you may not like it at first, but it may grow on you....
i know my personal opinion of the 7th gen accord was terrible at first. i thought at one time that the only thing that they got right was the back end. the rest of the car was trash. but, over time, i slowly warmed up to it. and now, i greatly appreciate the "ahead-of-it's-time" design....
you may hate it now, but you may love it in person.....
VTECaddict 08-29-2007, 10:48 PM i dont think the 8th gen is hideous. i really dont see the saturn/hyundai resemblances that so many other people see.
i did think the 7th gen was hideous the first time i saw it. look at me now.
chanke4252 08-29-2007, 10:54 PM I never thought the 7th gen was hideous, but the sedan can look very boring w/o some much needed additions. The oem body kits for the 03-05's is a necessity otherwise it's just bland. But w/ the kit it looks great. I think that a spoiler is a necessity, preferably a wing, for the 06-07's. The 08 sedan does look very boring imo and takes a lot of styling themes from other cars. Plus, it's a boat. I don't think I'll ever get past that. The coupe is ok, but it's getting too large for a fwd coupe (supposed to be sporty). The 7th gen coupe was borderline.

Nimoxp 08-29-2007, 11:17 PM I disagree with the civic sedan looking all that great. It looks like someone cut off a part of the rear. Just a cheesy corny look it has. And the interior...blah, what a turn off.

I see no resemblance whatsoever, besides them being both modern sedans. They both have four wheels..I guess..lol. The 08 Accord is definitely not hideous, and the back end is not boring. If anything, I'd say it's the best part of the car, class and sport rolled into one.
I agree with others when they said that the 7th gen was unattractive at first. I thought the 7th gen was really bland (even still looks bland right now if stock). But you tint the windows, throw in some nice wheels, and a few side skirts and spoilers, and you got yourself a sexy car. The key is subtlety, otherwise it would just end up looking like a Ricermobile.
All in all, why would people even consider the Accord sedan if they a want sporty looks. None of the Accord sedans in the past have exhibited "sporty" as much "classy or stately".
LOL and to the OP's post, the Honda Accord is hardly anybody's DREAM car.
Terps_Fan 08-30-2007, 06:08 AM I'm thinking the new accord is more likely to be taking it's cues from the BMW 5 series. I see NO resemblance to any saturn. The new accord also has a lot of the same design elements as a lot of today's luxury cars, and I'm sure that's where Honda was headed with the design as the car seems to be geared towards an older crowd with the money to afford it. This crowd is also more likely to appreciate alot of those design elements. The civic on the other hand is geared toward a younger crowd and that is why people seem to be referring to it as "hip" and "trendy." It doesn't really appeal to my tastes though, but if people are more into the civic, than thats what they should be buying instead of complaining about the accord. The accord is what it is, a solid family sedan with a great reputation that pretty much provides all the necessary features, IMO. Complaining about how bad the design is won't change any of that.
benjamming 08-30-2007, 06:13 AM I definitely like the looks of the 8th gen better than any 7th gen. You know what they say: smarts (in this case good looks) skips a generation.
RTexasF 08-30-2007, 06:21 AM The Accord & the Saturn look like they hatched from the same egg to me. Initially I don't care for it but will reserve judgement until I see one in person.

I don't like the fact that the sedan went bigger, but I definitely can see myself driving it if I didn't already have an '06. The design is definitely different, but Honda wouldn't be Honda without innovation at the very least. The side profile shot is pretty pleasing to my eye, except for maybe the wheels, but you can always upgrade to HFP. Also, notice that there is no uneven wheel gap! With the right color/accessory options, the '08 sedan can definitely give the current gen TL a run for its money.
SCABADA 09-06-2007, 01:09 PM LOL and to the OP's post, the Honda Accord is hardly anybody's DREAM car.
You never know. A lot of people (especially non-car enthusiasts) just want something that feels comfortable and safe and is known to be reliable. I've got a friend that while she was in college owned an old grand prix that was falling apart. I remember we were doing some icebreaker type of survey one time and one of the questions was "what is your dream car." Her answer: Toyota Camry. She's done well for herself and now owns a Solara. I think its an 02 or 03 V6 fully loaded. She could probably afford more but last I knew she loved that car.
Those of us who read lots of car magazines or websites, or play a lot of racing video games probably have a different class of cars in mind as dream cars.
accordexlv6 09-06-2007, 01:26 PM It does look like a Saturn... the midsize model (2003 or so) after GM added a huge blocky front end and truncated the rear light clusters. It made those years look terrible... totally out of proportion.
Remember when Honda was known for "bigger on the inside, smaller on the outside" engineering? No more.
The new Accord is too big... I was shocked to see that interior volumes with sunroofs between the Camry and Accord are almost identical (the Camry actually has more rear legroom and larger trunk), but Toyota kept the Camry under the magic 190 inches in length. The Accord at a tick under 195 inches is just shy of an Avalon or 300C. My in-laws have a 2006 Avalon, and as nice as it is, I think the car takes up too much space. I would never need an Avalon-sized Accord, or anything else for that matter. I mean, the BMW 5 Series is only 190 inches long!
Too bad Honda couldn't have a smaller sedan version that is appx. 188 inches long, with the same V6 and crisper, sportier styling (hey, just like my Accord!:D). And I don't mean an Acura priced some $10K higher just for the nameplate.
Let the Accord become Honda's Avalon fighter (obviously Honda's intention, especially after they crowed about how proud they are of it's newfound big-ness in the press releases) and create a new Honda Inspire model (great name with tons of potential) for those of us who want cars to be faster, lighter, more tossable, with a smaller footprint... still with V6 power, of course!
Just what Honda should be: an affordable Japanese alternative to BMW.:notworthy

Exactly. Give it some time. I'm not in love with the car's looks, but nor was I expecting to be. Come to think of it though my first impressions of it are better than my first impressions of when I first saw the 7th gen.
Then again sed6, think what you want. When it comes to cars I'm so boring now. I'd rather have a nice looking & well fitting interior than an impressive exterior. I'll be spending more time looking at the dash than looking at the exterior. Maybe its a self confidence thing or maybe I'm just getting old and boring I don't feel the need to impress others with a good looking surface like I use to.

It's definitely a valid point/concern, and the size will probably keep many people (like myself) out of an '08 sedan. For those of us that live in a heavily urbanized area and space is at a premium, vehicle size is my #1 consideration.
The mid-size market has such broad appeal, whereas the large market is a niche market and I am VERY surprised to see Honda going this route; in fact I thought they would go the opposite route to be honest, since they are so good at making smaller cars seem so large inside. :dunno:
rfs830 09-06-2007, 03:06 PM Its not really that much bigger. Is 3in really going to be that bad. I dont think so.
Honda knows what they are doing. I think it looks great.
joerockt 09-06-2007, 03:29 PM I'm waiting to see the sedan in person before I pass full judgement. I think the coupe is going to be a big hit.

Actually in the auto world, yes, 3 in. is a big difference. Think about garages, tight parking spaces, etc...3 in. could make or break it...
Cordi2005 09-06-2007, 07:02 PM I like the look of the 8th in the pics except for the front end. I will wait to see it in person for a final judgement. I really don't see any Saturn similarities and I think the 7th gen was more conservative. Overall I give it a  strictly from the pics.
Accord! =] 09-07-2007, 07:55 PM In the pic of the BMW 5 + the Accord 4-door, the Accord looks WAY better. I like the 5 but put them together and it looks bland. Anybody agree?? :)

I guess I am a practical deamer! I love to read lots of car magazines - Car and Driver, Automobile, Autoweek, Motor Trend - and play lots of racing video games. However, when it comes to spending my own money the dream car list is practical. Probably part of being an accountant. I love to keep up with the technology of racing, performance, and luxury cars, because it ultimately makes it to our more mundane daily drivers ...
I was out with my dad looking at Avalon's today and made him stop by the Honda dealer to see is any '08 Accords had made their way to the lot early. But, alas my new dream car has not arrived yet .... :):)

Stevie Wonder could see the similarities. Twin sons of different mothers IMHO, looks-wise. There's one other Saturn that looks even more similar (the L200 I think?). And as a former BMW E39 (1997-2003 5-series) owner, let me point out that the newer-design Bangle-ized 5-series (E60) design was greeted with MUCH wailing and dismay by loyal E39 owners, many swearing to never buy another BMW. Yet somehow BMW has managed to sell a few of them. The design hasn't grown much on me tho.
And I disagree that a design has to be "given time" to "grow" on me. For example, the TSX looked good to me right off the bat. The sketches of the upcoming new TSX look great too. It shouldn't be impossible to design a car that looks good from Day One. I'll spare you from my listing the many other cars out there that looked good to me from the beginning, but the 8th-gen Accord sedan isn't one of them. The 2006 Accord looked great to me from the beginning (the 2006's beginning, not the 2003's beginning because I hated the rear end).
The 8th gen coupe is another story though. THAT looks great to me, except for the bulbous, pedestrian-friendly front-end, made to look even more bulbous by the sinewy, curvy rest of the car. I could tolerate that one gaffe though - just give me a 6MT V6 8th gen coupe and I could be happy...
08exl 09-18-2007, 09:29 PM Definitely doesn't look like a saturn at all in my opinion. I (obviously since I bought one) think the 08 accord is a great looking car, I have caught a lot of stares in parking lots and on the road in just one day of owning it. I did get a couple of "looks like a BMW" comments which I didn't see so much until I saw them side by side on here. The car definitely has some similarities to a 5 series though...just my $.02 What is it on that saturn that looks like the accord? The headlights? Not at all, the tailights? Nope...Mirrors, doors? No...Rims? Not even close. Body lines? No way.....Just not seeing it.

You and Stevie Wonder think those two cars look alike? We're talking about the Saturn and the accord right? A blind Stevie wouldnt even say that. Even if he did, he's blind. What's your excuse? 4 doors and some lights make it look alike? Great eye

zro26t 09-19-2007, 05:15 AM I wouldn't say the front end of the Honda & Saturn in the pics posted previously look that similar. However, the rear ends of each car DEFINITELY show the styling resemblance. I saw this at my local dealer this past Saturday, and the back end of the '08 looked too boring, and Saturn-like styling. I'm glad I bought my '07s. I was hooked with those right off the bat. I can't say the same for the '08s. All was fine with the '08s until I saw the rear.
BTW, the interior of the '08s are A W E S O M E!!! Thumbs up to Honda for the improvement over the previous years. But I'd like to see a redesign of exterior (particularly the rear end.

BTW... what's up with the CRAPPY alloy wheel design for the V6 sedan? :thumbsdow Do they really look at these when making the final decision? I don't like "blinged-out" wheels or anything like that, but the styling is under par IMO. Maybe I'm just too meticulous. :dunno:
08exl 09-19-2007, 12:20 PM Do you really think the ion looks like the accord? I'm sensing a bitter 7th gen owner...cause I don't see it. They are both red though...
