View Full Version : 2006 Resonator Removal

Conundrum

Well I bought an AEM V2 a few days ago, and in preparation of installing it this weekend I figured I'd remove the resonator to see what it was like, then put the full CAI system on this saturday...

Anyhow, once I jacked it up, removed the tire, removed the inner fender trim, low and behold my resonator looked NOTHING like what the 6MT "kidneybean" shaped ones did in AEM's instructions (in fact, it looked a lot like the ones on the auto, except maybe 25%-50% smaller in overall size). I removed the one bolt I could find, but there is at least 1 more holding it in place, and its one I could not find/see before it started getting dark and I had to put things back together again.

If possible, could Princess or someone with access to Honda's tech dbase post removal/replacement instructions for the intake resonators for 2006+ Accords? I only need the 6MTs of course, but I'm sure others could benefit from having the others posted as well. Also, if I can't get the instructions, could someone please post the instructions for removing the bumper on a 2006+ coupe (I found some for the sedan on the forum but I know the bumper is different)? And if I have to pull the bumper, how do you remove the hooks near the headlights (if the coupe is like the sedan that is)?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out here. Looking at the AEM V2 box is painful for the moment...LOL (considering its not living in my bumper where it should be).

I searched "resonator" and this came up...

I saw that link when I did one of my searches, unfortunately the res for the I4 is different from the V6-5AT, vs the V6-6MT...and also my 2006 6MTs looks nothing like the 6MTs in K&N's or AEMs instruction manuals for either the V2 or Typhoon intakes. Arguably my resonator looks similar to the one in the pics on that thread, although its smaller in size (doesn't go all the way down the the bottom of the bumper as the box is smaller in size).

I agree. From what I have seen the bumper needs to come off.

I got all of the bolts off w/o removing the bumper, but in order for the resonator to come out intact you need to remove the bumper. I did it the bad way and pulled on it against something sturdy untill it broke. I was lucky I didn't damage anything, but I was in no mood to remove the bumper.

:lmao:

You shouldnt have to remove the entire bumper. Just get enough of the left side off so you can squeeze in there to get to the bolt.

I just got my AEM CAI for the TL-S. But its just too friggin hot to install right now. 106 degrees...ugh...

Lemme know how that goes. I want to get one in in the TL....but I'm scared.

I just changed my Air filter in the TL down in TX and when I changed it...I found it was full of water....soaked.....and I only drove in the rain..nothing more...

I plan on doing a comprehensive DIY as the ones at Azine suck ass.

Thinking about it, I'm hoping if I remove the trim under the bumper (part of the fender liner), and stick my head under there, I can reach up and in, and access that stupid bolt...then I just have to pull the assembly out via the fenderwell. I really don't want to pull the bumper if I don't have to (in case it doesn't align after or worse), plus I still can't find the instructions to completely remove it, as there is only the instructions on the 2006 sedan, and the fog instructions don't seem to show how to remove the complete bumper (just the grill really). Even going by the sedan instructions, I don't like having to deal with those hooks, as I'm not fully sure how they work and I don't want to break any (I already picked up a few spare "push-pin" style clips in case I damage any of those).

The bumpers are pretty easy to take off...I wouldn't worry about it.

no no, I got ALL of the bolts and completely disconnected the resonator. You can remove all of the bolts w/o taking off the bumper, but it is a pain. However, as I said, I was in no mood to remove the bumper as I hate dealing with the wheel well lining. So anyway, due to the way the resonator is shaped, I couldn't figure a way of actually removing it from the car w/o removing the bumper. It is wrapped around something (there are two relatively substantial tubes that are part of the resonator on my 06 6mt), I think it was part of the frame, but I forget as it was a few weeks ago. And even w/ the resonator completely disconnected, there wasn't enough play to allow me to unhook one of the L-shaped tubes from the car. Since I had no intention of ever putting the resonator back on the car, I decided to literally rip it out.

heh so the car is jacked up outside right now, battery out, stock airbox out, fender lining removed, and 1 bolt off the resontaor removed...but I just cannot get to that last bolt. I can litterally feel it with my hand, but I can't get a ratchet in there blind.

Does anyone know how the "hooks" work on the bumper...I really really REALLY don't want to pull it without completely knowing what I am in for. Until then, I'll be outside trying to access that bolt with the bumper still on the car.

I know what chanke is saying too...there are two large pipes that seem welded onto the resonator (one leading to the airbox area, the other is a j-pipe leading up past the battery to the intake inlet). Does anyone know if these just pull off? Arguably too I am never putting the resonator back on, so even if I have to break some of this getting it off I don't care anymore (so long as the airbox itself is ok in case I want to swap back, I'm happy.

Well its done, resonator is off, V2 installed and tested (can't really say how much of a difference yet, but I do feel more pull esp around the vtech crossover and def afterwards).

When I went back outside I removed the fog cover, and that gave me access to get the socket on the bolt, then attach the ratchet from the wheelwell and remove that bloody bolt. After that it was a real pain getting the resonator out of the car (had to pry it out actually, as there still wasn't clearance after removing the rubber connectors for the pipes), but once it came it it was relatively easy to install the V2 and finish the install.

Anyhow, I think I need food and a beer for all my hard work today...LOL
