that's why you find a service department that you trust, develop a good relationship with them, one tech and service writer, and live happily ever after. and you'll probably never get that at a jiffy lube type place. small independant shop, or dealer that will be personable with you is the best way to be safe. dealers like that are out there, but hard to find.

not everyone can, or should DIY because of this. and this should not entice people that shouldn't be DIY'ers to try.

Well, I never trusted those placed despite never having seen this video before. But from what I've seen of these places, it does not suprise me. I prefer not to change the oil myself because it's just annoying, but I will in lack of an acceptable alternative.

The last time I went to one of those jiffy lube places (about 8 years ago) they left my air filter disconnected and left a pair of vice grips laying in my engine bay. My car was never the same after that, though it still ran and never had any real problems other than making a weird engine noise from that point on probably because it sucked something up. Having to worry about total incompetence as well as dishonesty is a fun combo.

Before I moved I always went to a dealership down the street who had a quick-lube bay. They were always pretty fast and I never went through any of the hassles that I've experienced at any other chain shops. The price of their oil changes was about on par w/ the quick lube places, plus they didn't yank my air filter and everything else out every time, and they checked my tire pressure and tread depth, which I liked because I'm lazy when it comes to the boring stuff. The only reason I never got my car serviced or worked on there for anything else was because their labor rates and prices on parts were rediculous. Also because I really just haven't had much stuff done to my car over the past year that I didn't do myself other than alignments, tire stuff, and some suspension stuff (none of which was a repair).

I like DIY type stuff, but not all stuff as some of it is just mind numbing and not very satisfying. I like DIY stuff where you can tell a difference in the way the car drives and all that. I feel comfortable enough to really get down and dirty w/ the engine and internals, or transmission or anything though... I think it's important to know your limits and not press them too much at a time. This gives me a thread idea...

DIY and if someone goes wrong, theres no one to blame. PLUS you get the sense of security that it was done right.

i think the same thing happen in wheel works.. one of my buddies work at wheelworks and when they do the alignment, they simply just mess up your alignment on purpose saying its out of spec and service is needed. sometimes when shop is busy, the manager will tell them to do what jiffy lube been doing. but anyway, i never trusted any auto shops. i always have my cars served by my buddies and myself.

that's why I rotate my own tires and do any work I can myself. Any other work that I cannot do is done by legitimate mechanics, not the all-in-one chop-shop bastards. I've never heard so much BS slung as in those places. My mother always wonders why I never "just take my car to sears". She doesn't really care so she takes her car to the dealership for everything. At least at the dealership you only really have to worry about high prices, but you can usually be a little more confident that most of the services were done correctly (depending on the dealership, though there really aren't too many shady audi or toyota dealerships that she goes to).

Just last week a Jiffy Lube put gear oil in a Honda MT.... they customer brought it to the dealer because it would hardly shift.

If caught early just changing out the fluid to the right stuff will cure it. If left too long it needs to be rebuilt. Guess who had to rebuild it!!

I agree with Stevel, get a relationship going with your tech where ever you go. It makes a huge difference.

There's no real money to be made in simply doing fluid changes so any place set up for that it is going to likely try to upsale service. KNOW YOUR CAR & what's going on with it. If it ain't broke, don't agree to repairs. Refer to your owner's manual for the timing of maint.

I would love to be a secret shopper for auto repairs....as long as someone else provided the car! BAR sends in people to shops that have had complaints undercover. The majority of complaints are for independent shops, not dealers. Dealers have them too though. Dateline did a report a few years ago that said you only have a 25% chance of getting the repair done right the first time. Going up to a 50/50 chance at a dealer. It's so sad. It's no better for appliance repair.
