Well Everyone, as promised, this is the J series V6 DIY for the Oil change. Keep in mind that this is on a J32 out of my Acura TL…but the steps and pictures should all be close enough for you to figure it out. I realize that most of you don’t need this, but we do have a few members who’ve asked for this. Just like the tranny DIY, we are the only forum to have them, so that is pretty dang awesome.

Tools & Supplies you will need:

17mm Socket Wrench
Torque Wrench
Oil Catch Pan
Filter Wrench
Rags (to wipe up Oil)
Funnel
5 quarts of 5-20 Motor Oil (Your choice, I used Mobil 1)
Oil Filter (I used a Supertech ST7317)
New Honda Crush Washer

This is a picture of the filter and Wrench I used. There are many different ones, but this is the example. Sorry it is blurry...

Steps
First, I generally get the car up to running temperature before I change the oil. This is so the oil and dirt will flow out of the pan better. My dad always did it this way and he passed it on to myself. I used a lift on base to change my oil, but this is the step where you’ll need a jack, lift, or ramps. Your choice.

Once you have the car up, you will see this. The oil pan says engine oil. Pretty simple. To take the plug out, use the 17mm socket wrench. Keep in mind the oil is hot. As well, the placement of the oil catch pan is key because it will not come out straight down. You will need to predict the arc. Just keep that in mind, otherwise you may have oil all over your driveway.

Once the oil has stopped draining, I use a rag to clean the area around the drain plug and to clean the drain plug. Once that is done, place the NEW crush washer onto the drain bolt and tighten to a torque of 29 ft lbs. I used a torque wrench as you don’t want to go too tight as you can crack the oil pan.

Now it is time to change that oil filter. Depending on the tightness, you may or may not need this wrench. The oil filter is located above the front right tire’s wishbone suspension and isn’t super easy to get at (unless you are on a lift like I am). The filter is up and to the right of the white block I added to the photo.

Take the filter off, wipe the filter plate off, place some new oil onto the gasket of the new oil filter, and replace with your new filter. Pretty easy except you’re going to get oil on the frame/suspension components of the car. Just wipe them off when you are done. To tighten the filter, screw it on until the gasket just touches the metal. Once you are there, you turn it 3/4 of a turn more. If you don’t you will not be able to see if you have any leaks later down the road.

That is what the filter looks like.
Now, you can add oil to the car. The J series V6 in the TL and Accord both require 4.5 quarts of oil.

Just add the oil using the funnel (or not if you have great aim). I bought the 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 and it isn’t as easy to aim as a 1 quart jug.

Once you are done adding oil, check the oil with the dip stick. It should read a little high, but that is because the oil filter is empty. Making sure you replace the oil cap, start the engine and let it run for a minute or so in order to fill the filter. Turn it off and check again.

Now you are done with your oil change. Pretty simple stuff! Also remember you probably need to rotate those tires!

If anyone has anything to add, please let me know and I'll change it.

dude................ you seriously need to detail the underside of your car. no TL should be dirty underneath in the middle of summer. :lmao:

oh yeah, and yeah, it's that simple. hardest part is disposing of the used oil in a legal manner.

Hahaha...keep in mind...that filter was last changed on Feb 23 2007. That means it went through most of CO's winter....including when I got the car stuck w/ snow tires...:lmao:

The rest of the car was washed and waxed today. Interior was vacuumed, leather treated, dash treated, and dust removal.

It was so clean....I'm sure I pissed it off when I looked at a Tundra today:lmao:

Just an FYI that any auto shop that changes oil legally MUST take used engine oil from any person, free of charge...up to 5 gallons at one time. I use my local Jiffy lube for this purpose...I won't let them change my car's oil but they can have the dirty stuff!!:lmao:

You can place a ziptop bag over the oil filter after you have broken it loose. This will catch all the oil and you continue to unscrew the filter. No mess.

jiffy lube probably does the honors of sticking your used oil back into some unsuspecting customers car.......... :paranoid:

No, not completely sure...it may just be a NY thing...but it makes sense. Keeps most people from dumping it where they shouldn't. It is against code in all the areas around me to even put a drain in your garage for fear people will dump stuff they shouldn't...probably a good code.

I used a bag. Previous times I've had the hot oil on me....but it only burns for a second. It isn't really hot enough to do real damage. Be careful not to burn you hand on the exhaust pipe when removing the drain plug.

And the wheels too.

Yuck!

Wheels are clean on the outside. I don't bother w/ the insides...they just get dirty again....

Maybe I'll do it after the dealer attacks the 2 rattles on Thursday. I love the car....but my lust for it is gone until the rattles are fixed.
