so i have a 96 accord(its just like a 97 thats why i posted in here) and after i shut my car off about 2 minutes goes by and the cooling fan cuts on for about 5-10 minutes and runs, but then shuts off. Obviously it shouldnt have to do that, so has anyone ever experienced the same problem? If so what did you do to fix it.

if the car is not overheating while it is on, do not worry about it....
honda's are known for the cooling fan to run up to 15 minutes after you shut it off, to prevent heat-sinking. that way, there is less chance of engine damage, if any chance at all....
mine does it too.... there is nothing wrong as long as it's not trying to overheat while the engine is on....
ps: welcome aboard, albeit late.... :)

yea i never over heats on me. it could be hot as hell out and me running my a/c and it never does overheat. just the engine cooling fan runs after i shut it off and Im just like why the hell is that running.

it's normal to do that....
as stated above, all the honda's that i have been around have done that since day 1.
the engine does get strained with the hot sun, heat, and a/c all working against it. it needs a release somehow after the car is off, so that's where the radiator fan kicks in....
trust me, if it's not overheating at all, running normally, you honestly have nothing to worry about here at all....

After about 130,000 miles or so, I noticed that the cooling fan in my 96 Accord would run for about 5-10 minutes after I turned off the engine. Up until that point, it had never happened before (I had owned the car since 45k miles) I was told that it was caused by a bad thermal A or B switch.

itsahonda,
if that is the case, then when my radiator was replaced at 90k miles due to my massive accident, then the switch must have been faulty...
to my knowledge, it states in the owner's manual that the fan may turn on for about 15 minutes after shutdown of engine, in order to help cool off the engine and to prevent engine damage to possible heatsinking / slight overheating...

Maybe popping the hood if your in a garage would help it cool even quicker..just a thought.
Stiller,
Are you still on your original trans???

yes, still original, but noisy once the torque converter locks now.... it rumbles..... :paranoid:
that has been going on since they had to remove the tranny to replace the rear main seal last december....

I had to have the original radiator replaced at 120k miles and the issue with the radiator fan wasn't too long afterwards. Most of my commute was on the expressway around five in the morning. When I would arrive to work and shut the engine off, the fan would continue running. I wouldn't have thought much of it had I just driven for hours in bumper to bumper traffic during the hottest part of the day, but not after twenty or so minutes on the expressway early in the morning.
Unless the fan is only staying on under the most extreme conditions, I suspect a bad thermal switch.

i do not suspect anything wrong, only cause he said this above:
yea i never over heats on me. it could be hot as hell out and me running my a/c and it never does overheat. just the engine cooling fan runs after i shut it off and Im just like why the hell is that running.
in my personal experience, that seems to be normal operation to me.
please correct me if i'm wrong... :)

I had driven the car many times under the same conditions (Florida summers can be brutal) and not once did the radiator fan continue to run after the engine was shut down. Same goes for both the 06 and 07 Accords. Either his engine is in fact running a little hot or he has a bad switch.
Kshack, does the fan stay on regardless of outside temp or length of trip?

My 1997 didn't overheat, but the fan did run for ~5 min after parking. HOWEVER, once I had the radiator replaced (it had a small very leak for a long time, apparently) the fan no longer ran after parking.
So, if it's not overheating or draining your battery, I wouldn't worry about it. I would check the coolant levels regularly and maybe have it tested for leaks (especially if you're on the original radiator) and assume the thermostat is functioning unless the signs and symptoms tell you otherwise.

um if i drive to the store real quick no it doesnt but if i drive to work or somewhere that i have to drive for at least 15-20 minutes then yea it will. as far as the weather goes it started when it was hot out and im in georgia so its still hot here i have not expierenced it in the cold yet. I did have my radiator replaced back 2 years ago. the original had a small crack so i replaced it myself and i never notice the fan staying on and running until here recently.
