View Full Version : New tire advise
hudson66 09-16-2007, 07:24 AM Hello All,
I will need to get a new set of tires soon for my 2004 EXL V6 accord but I'm not sure what to get. I have v rated tires right now but are they necessary? I Was leaning toward the Michelin primacy H rated tires at a 113 dollars a piece. Does anyone have experence with these tires or can let me know which one i should consider? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
benjamming 09-17-2007, 08:09 AM I assume that you are looking at stock tire sizes?
I would also consider the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity H-rated.
BTW, H-rated tires will be fine for you or you can go with another v-rated tire. There are some overlaps in tire performance.
James.uk 09-17-2007, 09:10 AM Several factors to consider here.. ONE Your local terrain? TWO your local weather? THREE the way you drive? once we know those, we can talk tyres.. :D
hudson66 09-17-2007, 10:45 AM I have about 40,000 miles on the car right now but the tread is low. I have a 10 month daughter so i want to make sure the car is safe regardless if i a more miles left on these tires. I also Hydroplaned for the first time ever a few weeks ago and i think it's time to get rid of the OEM tires. I will replace with a the stock size so i'm just looking for something that is good in rain and light snow. I was looking for something that is quite as well. I was considering the goodyear assurance tire line as well. Again any help is appreaciated

I read the reviews on the Assurance ComforTred and decided to buy a set for my '04 Accord. The ride and road noise factors are very good. The wet traction is extremely disappointing, with quite a bit of wheel spin on acceleration. The biggest disappointment is the 10% hit to gas mileage they cost me - I dropped from 22 - 23 mpg around town to 20 - 21. This might be OK to tolerate for a great set of tires, but not for this average-performing set.
I do not recommend the ComforTreds. You might want to look at the Michelin HydroEdge - they were very impressive with wet traction on my 2000 Accord, and they are considered top-of-the-line (at Sears, anyway).
benjamming 09-17-2007, 12:32 PM Ok, so what is the amount of tread left - 4/32? Just b/c you hydroplaned last week doesn't mean it's time to get new tires. All tires will hydroplane at some point.
hudson66 09-17-2007, 12:59 PM well i can say i can see just about all of Abe Lincolns head when i put a penny in the tread.
RTexasF 09-17-2007, 01:21 PM This is the way I'll be going when it's time:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=Avid+V4S
EDIT: $111 each at the local Discount Tire. They have to order them so that does not include mount, balance, etc. I believe they are directional so rotate front to rear only.
chanke4252 09-17-2007, 01:49 PM ^^Those sound pretty good, and I like the tread design. They look more summer tire-ish than most other high performance all seasons. They are also quite a bit cheaper than my pole positions were and get reviews that are almost as good. Maybe I'll try a set of these out next if I don't get another set of pole positions.
Also, ADVISE is actually spelled ADVICE. Correct spelling ftw!
hudson66 09-17-2007, 04:44 PM sorry about spelling it wrong I didn't know how to go back to fix it

hudson66 09-17-2007, 06:38 PM thank you. does anyone have some tire ideas that i can look at? thank you to those you have given me some ideas so far
brickman 09-17-2007, 06:51 PM Go to www.tirerack.com and check it out. They have many resources to help you pick out your tires, not the least of which is consumer reviews of the tires. The website really is a useful resource for researching a tire purchase.
Audi Junkie 09-17-2007, 09:25 PM V4S are awesome, but poor in snow. A typical driver could use a tire like Kumho ASX or KH-16. I assume your size is 215/45-17? A lot depends on driver preferances.
namegoeshere 09-17-2007, 09:30 PM Take a look at these (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12400&highlight=tires) two (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12188&highlight=tires) threads.

That is likely so but where I live it has snowed once in 125 years!
hudson66 09-20-2007, 10:16 AM Well i think i have narrowed it down to 2 tires which are the Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge 92V and the Michelin Primacy MXV4 92H. Has anyone experience with either tire? What would anyone lean towards buying of these tires? These are just a OEM replacement i'm not lookingto modify anything.
thanks
I just got the michelins.
Quiet. 8/10
Ride good. 7/10
Steering response is okay - was better at the first few hundred miles. 7/10
Traction is not bad. 6/10
Will I buy them again? I can't tell. I'm not so thrilled with them at the moment. They're very good for a daily driver.
ELLSSUU 10-13-2007, 06:00 PM Don't discount the Hydroedge's. I put them on my wife's Odyssey and they are way superior to the OEM's that were on it before. Wet handling is has been upgraded by quite a bit. They are a little noisier but I'll take that for the comfort of having a safer tire.

This might be a bit old to add to, but a statement like that is just dumb. That's a very good reason to replace tires, especially considering most manufacturers now recommend replacement at 4/32" tread (due to testing they have done, Consumer Reports has done, and other independent agencies have done). 2/32" is just the legal minimum by law.

I run these tires now in a 225/50-17 and I do not recommend them. They flat spot and have become extremely noisy after 20,000 miles. They wear well and handle well but are now noisy to the point that it gets annoying. Buy something else.

You've made it your personal mission to trash a tire that ONLY YOU have had problems with. The only thing bad you can say about the V4S is that it has poor traction in the snow. IT'S NOT MADE FOR THE SNOW!
Despite what this uninformed and opinionated poster has said, they are great tires. You should buy them. I have sold over 150 sets out of the shop. I have NEVER had one come back for any problems due to anything. I back these tires up they are amazing. They don't get noisy at 20k miles, they don't flat spot (unless YOU flatspot them)....that's totally bogus. :lmao:
I should start threads hating on the continentals I had on my spec v's factory wheels. Those tires were TRASH!!!!!

Uninformed??? I have TWO sets of these tires...yes TWO sets on TWO different vehicles...my Accord and a Suzuki XL-7...both sets were installed on the same day and both have about the same mileage. Both sets have become noisy after the same mileage. Based on my experience with TWO sets of these tires, I do not recommend them. I am not making a personal mission out of this. I am sharing my experience and my recommendation and that's what car forums are all about.

Well, I don't know what to say. I can tell you I back those tires up like crazy, I think they are great and my customers love them. I have never heard of any problems. Sorry to hear about yours. Anyway- V4S's on an XL-7? Not a good idea really. GVW of an XL-7 is a little high... :dunno:

Curb weight on the XL-7 is 3,700 lbs.
I really liked them when they were new and up until the 20k mark...real nice price too. Oh well, I will do some more research before I decide on my next set. I think it might be Bridgestone. Any comments on Kumhos?
Thanks!
stiller fan 11-14-2007, 04:38 PM i have had good luck with kumhos so far. i had those on my 93 3 times (once they were all slashed, ruined), and plan on getting them again.
i did not have many issues with traction until the end. this was only with the touring tires. once they wore pretty low, they were downright dangerous in the rain, ok in the dry.
before the 93 was perma-parked, i was running one of their summer tire sets. never had a problem in the rain, really, unless there was nearly an inch of water due to very heavy downpours. if there was decent drainage, i was still able to do 50mph in blinding downpours. i use rain-x, btw....
