: Nav system upgrade?
04EXNavi 09-23-2004, 08:11 AM I've read that the new Honda Nav system on the '05 Odyssey and RL allows input of addresses totally by voice, without having to type in the street address.
I wonder...would this be available eventually to owners of the present Accord's system via some type of software upgrade? Maybe that PC card slot could be used to hold a system patch that would supplement the voice commands?
princess 09-23-2004, 12:18 PM :dunno: The Odys just got released, I haven't heard much about the Nav system.
It may never be upgradable to that, but another year may include it.
Sometimes it could sure be handy, but so far it hasn't been difficult to use as is.
04EXNavi 09-24-2004, 03:50 AM I agree, the current Accord system is extremely convenient and useful...it would be cool to be able to integrate the latest upgrages though.
I'm still discovering more commands for it all the time...but I still haven't found the one that vaporizes cars in the left lane.
princess 09-24-2004, 05:27 AM Now that would be an updrade I'd pay the $185 for !!!!!:D
04EXNavi 09-24-2004, 09:04 AM I love when the system doesn't hear a command, and the voice just says "Pardon?" It has a snooty tone like she was just asked an insulting question.
anysia 09-24-2004, 09:10 AM now if there was one that vaporized cars in the left lane, i'd have to upgrade my 3 month old accord to one with navi!!!! :D
princess 09-24-2004, 10:35 AM Or when she doesn't understand that you said A/C & changes the CD.... Oh so much fun. Like most females, she doesn't listen to my prince! We get a good laugh out of it! (well, I do) She hears me fine & obeys..... we do argue a little on which route to take sometimes.... I'm a creature of habit & there's no way I'm going her way home off of I5, a way traveled by us frequently....even if it would save us a mike or two!
04EXNavi 09-24-2004, 10:40 AM I find it has a nice 'learning curve', she gets it right except if it's early and I'm mumbling.
Sometimes the directions it gives make me wonder, though. And I still haven't mastered the nuances of the varios ways to have it plot the route.
I had to learn some things too, like holding the talk button until the entire command was given. I had a habit of releasing it while I was saying the last word, and she would have to guess. I thought she was getting senile - it took me months to figure out I was the problem.
princess 09-25-2004, 06:35 AM I was forgetting to let go!
I have a tendecy to do that in games too.....hold.....shoot.......spin..... With some games it's really worked great!
Not so great when using something with a "walkie talkie" way to do things!
push, talk, LET GO, listen....

Yeah I know... It was a joke. *grins*
princess 09-30-2004, 05:47 AM sorry:blush: it's early....to me middle of the night! I had to get up early to help get the boys off to school, mom's not feeling well! She has an infection after her surgery.....
Please forgive the mistake...
If I had the male voice, I'd never listen.... :D
:o :o :o

(Joke) If you had the male voice, I'd be frightened. If it was just your car, that would be fine. (/Joke)
Sorry to hear mom's not feeling well... *offers chicken soup* Hope she's better soon.
princess 09-30-2004, 06:35 AM You're sure "punchy" this morning!
I normally awake about 6-6:30 7 today I had to get up at 5, but ended up waking up at 4 because I was afraid I'd over sleep. I am not a morning person! If the sun's not up yet, I don't figure I should be either!
My daughter's surgery was last week, but for whatever reason the incision has become infected. Her husband asked me if I'd get the boys to school today & of course, I said yes. They should've been here by now though.... he's NEVER on time!
When we bought the Accord we really were surprised that she has a lower vlice than the Pilot, then when the Pilot got her upgrade that voice was lower yet. Still femsale, but not as high pitched as before.
The other day my mom wanted to know how far it is from my house to hers. It was quicker to grab the keys than find a map. Her's is a previuous destination so start, wait, touch..... it's 282 miles! It was nice to have a reason to use the Nav since I rarely need it around here!:)
I should be really awake in a few hours... or tomorrow....or never! It may be just one of those days!:D

That's... interesting. I'm not sure how exactly they come up with the voices for the nav system, but, in general there are two ways of doing text-to-speech conversion (which is what the system uses.) One is to record a real voice speaking various phonemes and phoneme sequences, then select from that set when doing a conversion. The other is to basically write up a definition of what the phonemes should sound like (pitch, tone, duration, etc.) and use that instead of a recorded set.
In either case, you can tweak the output by changing the pitch, tone, duration, etc. during playback. If you have text-to-speech software on your computer, you can see examples of how this works.
It wouldn't take much to change the pitch of a voice in the nav system, in fact it's even something that COULD be controlled by the user at runtime, if they decided to add that capability.
WHY they would change it between versions, I have no idea. Maybe they have a focus group working to figure out what the most 'comfortable' voice is.

Let's hope they don't get to politically correct...
I can just here Bill Cosby's Mushmouth on a nav system....Turnba lefta Abit du Nextba Intrbasecbicksion.......
Or maybe Daisy Duke, Arrrrnold, hehehehe.

billinaz 12-06-2004, 12:14 PM When I picked up my 05 Accord Coupe, the navi system had the female voice enabled.
By the time I got home I had changed to the male voice.
Something about a female telling me how to drive just bugged me.

Welcome to the forum billinaz!!:)

princess 12-06-2004, 02:54 PM Welcome billinaz! I know another Bill in AZ.... my brother!
Hope you enjoy it here at driveaccord!:)
billinaz 12-06-2004, 03:14 PM I dont think Im your brother...... I would probably know!
I go back to the dealer tomorrow to get a new front bumper cover installed, along with foglights.
LoJack goes in Friday.
Waiting to sell our spare car to put in the replalcement headrests with screens for the DVD player.
These forums are great for the knowledge and experience you can leech off of!
princess 12-07-2004, 08:03 AM Yeah, probably not.... my brother lives in Laveen & is too cheap to buy Hondas! He buys most of his cars at auctions or through ebay.:D
If I were to go with a DVD to stay, I'd also be more apt to go with headrests than the ceiling kind. We don't have the little guys all that much on roadtrips, so we went with the clamp on mount screen. That way we can use it in both cars. We don't have a true set pattern as to which one we travel in.
BenjiBoy650 12-07-2004, 02:36 PM Makes no sense to me to put screens in the headrests on a coupe but hey whatever floats your boat.
billinaz 12-07-2004, 02:46 PM I want to give the kids something to watch.
There is no Honda kit to put it in the headliner, that is for the sedan only.
