My son is turning 8 on the 22nd of this month.

The only thing he REALLY wants is a wii..He also wanted one last year but it was such a hot product that I couldn't find one.

So fast forward to last week, I figured enough time had passed since the release of the wii so I should be able to find one no problem - figured I pick one up this week... WRONG!!

I've had such a freaking hard time finding one that I was bout to buy a stupid bundle package that was a couple hundred more expensive than just the system but came with games (that my son isn't interested in)

I had basically given up and was just going to give him the money and tell him we would search every weekend for one... This option was very anti-climactic and I was really bummed..

On a whim I called a Wal-Mart that I have been calling everyday for a week... what do you know THEY HAD 2 OF THEM IN!!! This was at about 10am I bolted from my desk, headed out the doors from work and was driving like a maniac..And there it was a wii!!!

I am sooooo excited to give this to him, he is a really great kid. Very kind, courteous, respectful, does well in school, follows directions...in other words, he deserves it..

I can't wait to give it to him on Saturday that I just had to share!!!

Congrats on the find. You should have said something...they are pretty easy to find down here and I would have easily picked it up for you :)

He will enjoy it. Guitar hero comes out at the end of the month. Mine is pre ordered so I can have it the day it comes out. I love my Wii.

For accessories...go to Sam's Club. I got the recharable Li batteries and charger for 25 bucks and a sweet backpack for the Wii (he and you will be carrying that thing around everywhere).

Also...you can hook it up to wireless internet if you have it in your house.

Did I mention I love my Wii....:)

What a great dad you are, that's true committment. You are going to make his day with that, maybe even his year. I'm not sure sure if you've played Wii before, but it is definately the most fun gaming system out there. It may not have the best graphics and features, but you can really get into those games.

You know what I didn't even think of that (duhhh)..man that is awful nice of you to even put two and two together and come up with that kind offer..top notch!!

My son loves guitar hero on his PS2..he tells everyone "I can beat surrender in hard mode" he's so proud!

Thanks for the Sams club tip.

So how does this thing work meaning the controllers? as you mentioned they are battery powered. How do you charge them? Does the system come with the charger?

Is there anything else I NEED to buy right at this moment besides games?

Tell me more about the wireless internet part. Is that to game with others that are on-line or can you actually web surf?

Thanks man, I try my best and it is pretty easy considering I have a superb son..I really lucked out!!!

I've never played the wii but my son has...there is this "gamin cafe" that has a ton of wii's, xbox 360's, and PS3's. You play by the hour and I have taken my son there a few times... he gets so excited when I say "Hey Zach, wanna go play wii at the "chill zone".

I can't wait to give this to him I am sooo excited.

I'm going to put it in a HUGE box, and then inside another box etc, etc..

Thanks for sharing in my excitement guys!!!

The Wii is fantastic, and GH3 comes out on Sunday.

You may want to get another controller and nunchuck so two people can play. You will go through AA batteries like no ones business. Invest in a good charger with rechargeable batteries.

If you have a wireless router you should be able to connect the system to your network. Otherwise you can buy a USB wifi adapter (I believe it only works with PC and not Macs) or an Ethernet adapter for wired connections. You can surf the web, read the news and weather and buy old video games (for price). You could also pick up a couple of point cards or just purchase them with a credit card. Some games have multiplayer over the internet (Madden 08 and Mario Strikers).

You can connect to other Wii's with friend codes so their Miis can travel to your system and you can write notes.

I love the Wii, my wife surprised me for my birthday last year by waiting in line with a bunch of "Zelda sweatshirt wearing nerds" (her words, not mine) to get me one on opening night.

I hate all of this video game insanity. But I'll admit I fell into it back when my older 2 kids were younger. This was back when the Nintendo 64 first came out. it was like the Thanksgiving timeframe - early 90's if I remember correctly. I was at the mall and stumbled across a new batch of consoles that came in at one end (Lechmere was the store - big in New Engand back then). But I also wanted to get a game cartridge, and Lechmere didn't have any. So I walked to the other end of the mall to an Electronics Botique, and there they had cartridges but no console. And there were a boatload of people there looking for a console. I walked to the counter and asked for one of the games, and the guy said "did you find a console yet? They're backordered thru us for 2 weeks".. I said, yep - just picked one up down at the other end of the mall. Almost immediately at least 8 people RAN out of EB towards Lechmere, trying to get a console before they ran out. For once in my life, I was ahead of the mob, not behind it. :lmao:

My youngest son (10) wants a Wii for christmas, and from the sounds of it, I should start tracking one down sooner rather than later....

thanks - andy

Princess: ha cute...my family on the west coast called for his b-day and he was so excited that he got the wii he told them within the 1st 30 seconds of the call. They asked me, what the heck did you get him? I said it's a wii, they said "a what" I said like you are on a ride "weeeeee" ha ha

Filpco: man, I didn't know it did all that. When we were setting it up I realized it had a SD slot so I popped in my card that had pictures that were just taken from his party and we enoyed a slide show..pretty cool.

Yesterday we went to EB games and he spent almost all of the money he has been saving -he pre ordered guitar hero 3 and some mario & sonic Olympic game

Andy: yup, better start looking bud!!!

I can't wait for GH3, I need to track down midnite openings around my area.

If you get Excite Truck you can import MP3s into the game and listen to them when you play...it's not a bad truck/driving game.

Around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area I see a few from here and there, but supply could be tight. Until this month it had been the best selling console since last Novemeber (thanks to Halo 3). The best bets to find on is to watch ads in the Sunday paper.

Around here (college town) they're pretty easy to find used with games for under 200. When I was a kid, used was the same as new when it worked :)

I personally bought the Energizer E-series lithium rechargable batteries for the controllers. got 8 batteries, 1 charger, and can only use 4 at a time anyhow. Works out nice, since the Xbox360 uses AAs too. Never without batteries!

When you buy a 2nd controller, be sure to buy the WiiPLAY package! Comes with a new disc full of games and with the 2nd controller as a "BONUS".

I use this too and it is nice, batteries last for a while too (20-30 hours is my guess).

My girlfriend somehow managed to get me a wii for Christmas last year. I'm so tempted to tell all the corny wii innuendo jokes now!:naughty:

Congrats on the new wii. Hope your kid has a lot of fun with it. He sounds like a good kid.

Can you play others in GH3 via Wifi?
