View Full Version : Is 225/55-16 too wide for 16x6.5 rims?

Got a lightly used set of 225/55-16 Michelen PA/2 winter tires at a very reasonable price, I know it's a bit wider than the ideal size for winter tires but the deal was too good to pass.

What I didn't do was checking with the local tire shop if the steel wheels they carry go as wide as 7" width, turns out the widest 16" steel wheels they carry are 6.5".

While some of the on-line shops seem to show 225/55-16 tires are OK for 6.5" width rims, I wonder if anyone here has tried that?

Thanks

Just like in the thread "how wide"

I always go to the tire manufacturer's web site and look up their specifications. They normally list a recommended or approved rim width. It might be a little conservative, but I figure the manufacturer should know what they are doing. I'm presuming your question is just related to rim width not clearance issues. Here's an example:

A bit too wide IMO. You should ideally try to find 7" wide wheels. But they'll fit okay.

225/55-16 size tires will fit a wheel that's between 6" and 8.5" wide.

I have 225's on 16's but not that specific tire, been on them for close to a year now, no problems.

If the price is right (and especially since you already have them now!), heck, use them in good health! Being winter tires I figure they must be for a specific need you have. I don't think I'd worry over a .5 inch difference in rim width...

OK, just found out Acura dealership can get 16" x 7" wide steelies for TSX, current gen TL and last gen TL, but they cannot tell me if which one of these will fit the 7 Gen Accords. :dunno:

Any inputs? i.e. what are the hub diameters (NOT the 114.3mm bolt pattern) for the 7 Gen Accords, TSX, last Gen TL, and current Gen TL? I've seen a couple of conflicting numbers on the web in the 50 something mm and 60 something mm range. I guess worst case I can jack up the car, remove a wheel and measure it with a digital caliper, but it's so much easier to ask people here who may have that piece of info off the top of their head

As well, (perhaps I need to ask on the TL forum), what is the offset of the TL and Accord wheels? I've seen 55mm as well as 45mm mentioned ....... :dunno:

Thanks

not sure what the exact measurement is but the previous generation TL rims work fine on the 7th generation accord. I have a 16" set I use for my snow tires and they've been great.

Cheers,
Steve

OK, since no one answered my hub diameter question, I decided to answer myself, by jacking up the car, remove wheel, and measure, at least this way I can be 1,000% sure.

The hub dia. is 64mm, the offset is indeed 55mm as stamped on the back side of the rim.
