Yes, that is amazingly easy. I also have a Pilot, and just finished the a/c filter change. I am a total clod at do-it-yourself projects, but that one was a breeze. Took 30 - 40 minutes, tops, and next time it will be about 15 minutes. Saved about $60, and i actually had fun doing it!:blah:

Thanks for the great information. I looked at a tech's book of directions and it appeared that a Doctorate Degree was required to change the filter! If it's as simple as it appears I'll be tickled.

From previous experience I change mine between 10&12K. On my previous car the filter was just plain nasty @ 11K.

Pulled out mine yesterday. Wow, that thing was NASTY. Lots of leaves and black with soot from our clean new york air. Gonna check the dealer tomorrow to see if I can get a filter from them and replace it myself.

Folks,

I just replaced mine today. All I can say is, "Sheesh, why didn't I do this six months ago?!?"

Really, just squeeze in the sides of the glove compartment box, pop it out and let it hang down, then squeeze the tabs holding the filter holder in place, and pull it out. Not even a five-minute operation!

I got my filter from the local Honda dealer for $20.23, which I didn't think was too bad -- I was expecting it to be well over $30. I hadn't done a really exhaustive search, but the auto supply places I looked for a filter before didn't have them at all. So, again, it wasn't too bad.

And, here's the result:

http://home.comcast.net/~thoots2/cabinfilter.jpg

This was after about 10,700 miles. I'll probably do it every 5,000 miles from here on -- why not?

I checked mine today at just under 12,000 miles. It was full of leaves (on top) but was not horribly tacky. I knocked out most of the caca by tapping it upside down on the concrete. Then I took a spray duster (for computers) and blew the rest out. It wasn't that bad or discolored so I reinstalled it.

I then decided to check the filter in my Sweetie's Corolla....gross to the max. I had another as a back up and replaced it. The A/C blew about 15-20% stronger on high fan speed after the new one was installed.......even she noticed the difference without my telling her I replaced it!

28K and shy of 2 years. Mine was filthy and had pine needles and bugs in it. Changed it by just pulling down the glove box and pulling out the filter holder. Did the wife's Highlander at the same time. Similar set-up. Her's was not so bad after only a year. I'll start changing the Accord every year now. Shame it is $26.95 for filter element. Seems like a bunch of money for what you get.

From thread: http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=456&page=3&pp=15&highlight=cabin+filter

these are the instructions:
http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/cabinair.shtml

Be careful - I think there is a very important third screw you have to remove...

From the same thread:
DANGER DANGER!!!
There's a third, very important screw that they missed. It's under a small snap-out panel in the center stack.

If you follow their instructions and start pulling, you'll see where it's not pulling out. That's where the screw is. If you keep pulling, you'll break the trim panel.

Did the replacement less than 5 mins. tops (including going online and printing out the PDF instructions, yup I'm that kind of car owner  ) Here's a couple of pics of may CAF at 15K. The Accord is our daily driver at around 98% NW Chicago suburbs driving. With the 15K "gunk baseline", I will now change CAF every 7500 miles. Thanks again to driveaccord.net!

makes this site so GREAT! Here I was dreading removing screws and stuff...

I did it in less than a minute. The only thing I might add is that on mine, I had to push in to let the door drop down on the left, and on the right, there is a little hook that has to be removed from the door (part of the closure/cushioning mechanism).

I got it done today, it did need it. (after nearly 130k mi). I have to admit it was pretty dirty, with a few leaves and whatnot in it, but from the comments about 10 and 11K changes I thought I'd find a grilled cheese sandwich in there. I dunno if my A/C is going to pump harder tomorrow or not, glad it's done, but not sure If I'll worry about it again for another 100K if even then. Time to get to the tranny fluid, brake fluid, drive belt, paint touchups and interior detail. (If there's anything I do keep up, its the waxing.)

Local Dealer's generic [all model] service menu lists cabin filter replacement at $125. [Although, I do understand not all are as easy as 7th Gen.] Thanks to the directions on this thread, did it in 5 minutes for the cost of the filter, $20. Didn't even have to empty the glove compartment, just propped it up temporarily with a Kleenix box standing on end.

After 20k, I changed the cabin filter. They had the purolator ones on sale at Advance Auto Parts so I went with that. The fit was not very good. Just a warning to those who are thinking about aftermarket. That said, they did have the instructions in the box with pictures of the car like the onese included here.

Some one mentioned they read that there is cutting required on after removing the glove box on pilots may be. For sure its done on Odysseys. I repalced it on mine sometime ago. The instructions helped greatly. Why Honda decided to put that piece of plastic there in the first place is a mystery specially, if the manual calls for it to be cut anyways ...

princess
11-21-2007, 05:25 PM
You're correct. There's a piece of plastic to remove on the Pilot. I think having it there made assembly easier at the factory.:dunno:

Not on the 06 ODY..... I didn't check other years.

Is that advisable to use an unknown brand of filter? i keep hearing everybody push OEM everything for honda...

zro26t
05-31-2008, 06:50 AM
I'm sure that if you talk to a Honda service rep or tech, they'll tell you that anything non-OEM is ill-advised. I had front brake pads and rotors changed on my AV6, and the idiot tech told me that the Duralast Gold hardware that I had them install would squeak within the first 5000 miles. Now, 15000 miles after the install, the pads and rotors look as if I just put them on the car! The OEM front pads lasted every bit of 20K miles. Warped the OEM rotors b/c of no warning from metal tabs to rotors. Honda didn't even advise of low brake pads when they rotated the tires.

Back on topic... I just had the oil changed less than an hour ago, and I had to call a service rep out for trying to charge me $129.99 to replace the CAF! I told him that's a ripoff for the task to be performed. His response was "there's quite a bit involved to change that out." I laughed and told him the procedure, and he smirked, rolls his eyes and walked away. Going to check prices at another dealer to compare. I never liked this dealership's service dept, and now, I really can't stand them. If you're in the Baton Rouge area, do NOT go to Richard's Honda for service advice! Get what you absolutely need, and disregard the rep's recommendation.. They are no more than poor sales people.

Update...

Since I've become good acquaintances with the GM of Richards Honda of Baton Rouge (I guess b/c I've bought three cars from them), I decided to go back and talk to him about my experience earlier this morning (being that he wasn't there during my first visit). I showed him what was to be replaced, demonstrated the procedure to do so, and asked him how much time & labor he would expect for this to be done. He mentioned the minimum labor time & cost (30 minutes & $42.50), then I showed him the invoice that shows $129.99 (labor) + the price of the filter ($22.xx w/ tax from Honda). He had a puzzled look on his face, and said he's going to get his Service Manager to come in on his day off (today) to discuss it. :lmao: I sat and chit-chatted for a while after he made that call. He told me to let him know the next time I come in for service. I guess the next oil change is on him. :dunno: Too bad, b/c I'm not going back for their service. I'd buy a car there again, but no service work.

This is the reason why I like to do my own maintenance and repair work.

BTW... check out the attachment that shows the old filter vs the new one. This is with 35,280 miles on the odometer.

That does seem pretty easy...I was getting my oil changed and they "recommended" that I change the Cabin filter along with my air intake filter. This is soooo easy. My dealer wanted to charge me $71 for the cabin filter and $54 for the intake filter. I knew I did not need an intake filter as the one I have is only 4 months old. The cabin filter did need to be replaced as it was the original one and I am about to turn 60K on the odometer. It took me 5 minutes to verify the intake was still good, and it took me 2 minutes to replace the cabin filter.

I am tempted to go back to the dealer and demand an explanation, but honestly........with gas at $4.00, I am not inclined to drive there. It ain't worth it.

When I changed mine just today, yikes, it's so filthy. I just had my 2004 Accord LX just this April and i guess that the filter hasn't been changed since the first owner.

Glad that the process was that quick and it only cost me C$20 from an autoshop rather than a Honda dealer which is charging me C$37.

Great help guys.
