A 9½-foot-wide auger started churning up soil and stones Thursday on the east bank of the new Interstate 35W bridge site. The hole will go down about 112 feet, said Peter Sanderson, project manager for Flatiron Constructors. The test shaft will be near where future footings for the bridge piers will go.
