View Full Version : How often do you run your engine to redline?
daavo 11-01-2007, 10:34 PM I was thinking that I only floor it once or twice a week but after more careful inspection it appears that it happens about once per day :nuts:. Somehow I still manage 24 mpg in mostly city driving. My 03 5-speed averaged 27 mpg over 60k similar miles. But I rarely even meet the speed limit and usually drive under by 5 mph or so and I guess that helps with the mpg :dunno: and keeps me low profile :nerd:. How often do you floor it or run it to redline??
DuckMuck 11-01-2007, 11:07 PM I live in the East Valley...and Chandler/Tempe/Mesa is more or less connected by wide four/five lane highways with everybody going around 75mph...I find myself pushing the car pretty hard to merge onto these highways...I don't think I am hitting the red line...but it is getting up there...given that I have a finite amount of pavement for the on ramp and I have to match/exceed the speed of vehicles on the highway in order to successfully merge...it is really nuts...I come from Vancouver, BC...where most of the driving is city driving...and people are pretty easy going on the road...I still cannot get use to driving in Phoenix...retards who don't signal when they change lanes...retards who don't even slow down when they see somebody trying to merge...retards who completely ignore yield signs...the only place where I think the traffic is worse is LA...sigh...living in these mega satellite cities is so stressful!
chanke4252 11-01-2007, 11:09 PM ^^yah, there are a few select cities in the US where people drive like bastards. You sometimes just have to just change lanes or merge and make people get out of your way in those conditions, which sucks and is obviously unsafe. I have no problem sliding in between cars if I have to though as I can usually outrun and outmaneuver those jackasses who actually try to keep you from changing lanes or merging in front of them even though you sometimes don't have time to slow down enough to merge behind them w/o nearly stopping on the freeway (why do they do this?). I always give them plenty of time to see my signal before I resort to such jackassery though. Indianapolis isn't bad as the traffic is generally pretty light. Denver wasn't bad either considering the amount of traffic it sees. Washington DC is not my favorite place to drive though, especially during peak traffic hours, and Chicago plain sucks.
I bring my rpms up to and a little over 4k frequently. I don't run it to redline very often, though I will bring it a little over 5k at least once a day. I think I redline it maybe once a week or once every other week, depending on my mood. I have never actually hit redline though as I tend to back off about 200-250rpm before that. I average 25-26mpg with about a 50/50 mix of driving.
VTECaddict 11-01-2007, 11:21 PM i run it past 4000rpm very often, and past 5000 at least a couple times a week. i rarely redline it because the power drops off very quickly after 5500 rpm on my 4 cyl.
Heckler 11-02-2007, 03:45 AM Me?...well..before my kid (15+ months ago), I redlined the spec v everytime I drove it. My accord? It's an auto, and I drive it like a senile 89 year old
Accordlover 11-02-2007, 03:56 AM Hmm.
Probably everyday getting onto the freeway. I get on at one of those stop and then go kind of on-ramps. Usually my chaotic entry to the freeway is unnecessary; but I do it for kicks! :D. :lmao:
I like how the A/T can switch moods really quickly. If you push the pedal down it goes. When I pass, I tend to drop the gear shifter myself to save me the trouble of flooring it just to drop 1 gear.
I like how you can toggle back and fourth between D3 and D4. It's been my passing tool lately.
mwmcginn 11-02-2007, 04:11 AM Ive made a concerted effort to drive more efficently. So I rarely do it. This is where most of you gas mileage loss comes from, I think. So I kinda do the opposite of you. I generally dont floor it and maintain a higher constant speed once I get on the interstate.
I do not see the point in a 4cyl or even a 6. Plus is trashes your fuel economy.
Now if this was a V8, you need to do it very early after the first 2-3k of miles. This will season the engine and make it more responsive for racing in general.
ItsaHonda 11-02-2007, 07:41 AM I've only hit redline in the 07 once in the last 13k miles. In fact, the engine has been over 3k rpms only twice that I can recall. I've never needed to push it hard and I've got better things to do than to dog the engine out just for kicks.
Accordtx1 11-02-2007, 08:23 AM they make the white space on the Tach for a reason and I feel that it is my duty to use it. I often take the car to 4-5k and I still manage 28 mpg.My wife manages 30 mpg with mixed driving. I rarely take it to redline, only in emergancy situations like two weeks ago. With the auto, holding it to the floor will make the tranny shift right at redline. I always back off slightly to make it shift 250-500 rpm sooner unless I really need the extra rpm. Then I keep it to the floor and let the engine and transmission decide what they want to do . :)

turBeau 11-02-2007, 10:33 AM The ECU has fuel cut-off @ redline. The actual redline on our cars well below what the engine can handle. Its just a safety margin so no need to worry about damaging or hurting these K's longevity.
Use the rpm's, thats what they're there for.

Exactly... :banana::nuts:

That makes no sense. What does the number of cylinders have to do with anything? Plus, a lot of Jap. cars powered by 6cyls (even 4cyls) stand up to the Domestic V8's really well in terms of performance.
I was just wondering this the order day actually. I tend to use the RPM's a lot. I usually get 22-24 on an AT V6 with my heavy foot. I drive about 2 miles of solid banked S turns (who wouldn't fly through the corners?). I should take some pictures of it, it's really fun and usually when I drive about 9AM and 11:30 AM there is a lot of traffic. I always boot it down after the corners. I tend to floor it off the line at least 1 time a day, hopefully I'm not killing my car
snodog 11-02-2007, 12:32 PM I drive the accord like a 40 year old (probably 'cause that's what I am).
I baby that car; wash and wax her on the week-end, rotate the tires like church on Sunday morning...check the SYNTHETIC oil at every fill-up. 303 protectant on everything vinyl...
...All the compsulsive routines I follow...
I treat that car like a princess beacuse the 5 or ten times a year I have to nail the throttle to the floor for some required reason I don't want any excuses why she cannot get to the limiter and I mean right NOW:thmsup:

What does this have to do with, well, anything?
HondaPOD 11-02-2007, 01:23 PM Almost everyday. I live on a road and have to pull out fast to get on the main road. Fun! :D

Mine doesn't give me any excuses and I hit the red daily. The calibrations are very de-tuned on these motors. You have nothing to worry about.

Same here. But I would use the word "paranoid" to describe my case instead of the word "compulsive"... and that is a gooood thing
I only redlined it once and that was a matter of survival... on the on-ramp of a freeway the guy on the right lane was actually matching my speed while I was accelerating to get on, didn't pull to the left to let me on... obviously a person with issues. With not much room left ahead of me to get on the freeway, I floored it, VTEC kicked in and the poor Chevy was just a bit embarrassed when he realized that little black thing on his right wasn't kidding.
Other than that I go to around 3.5-4.0K, daily, and thats about it.
stiller fan 11-02-2007, 03:57 PM when i was driving my 93, i had no issues with bringing her up to 5500 rpms (redline = 6300).....
since the first time that i had the oil seal issue tho, i kept her under 4k rpms, unless i really had to.
of course, if someone really pissed me off, i was shifting the car into D3 around 60-70mph..... :naughty:
as for my mom's car, i shift it manually, due to the tranny issue. the car has seen upwards of 5k rpms as well, altho it does burn a trace of oil. i love the kick-in of vtec at 4k rpms, and visit it often enough to keep me happy..... :D

Accordtx1 11-02-2007, 06:29 PM car is in for repair, and they gave us a V6 loaner. I like the V6 and I have already gotten her to her sweet spot... :) Our next honda will be a v6. I dont know what I was thinking when I bought the I4. I have v6 fever..... :)
SiClone 11-02-2007, 06:51 PM I wish the redline was higher than the 6400 rpm mark.....
FYI for you 5mt owners if you didn't know - the rev limiter (fuel cutoff) in 2nd gear hits right at about 62-63 mph....:D
KunalPatel87 11-02-2007, 06:54 PM Only if I need to get in front of the stupid WM truck or Verizon truck that decided to drive in the fast lane and kick up stuff onto my car. :headbash: :furious:
I probably don't even redline it. It just feels like it.

Yep, I really liked my old car with the I4 but this V6 is a work of art in my opinion and I can't keep my foot out of the accelerator.

Do yourself a favor--don't drive a V6 with the manual. I made that mistake and wound up driving it home right afterwards. My checkbook might not forgive me, but damn it's fun to drive.

I would suggest just the opposite. The 6mt accord is one of the more satisfying cars to drive currently, unless you want to pay well over 30k and jump into a high quality rwd/awd car of some sort (g35, bmw anything, a couple more). I drove a lot of cars when I got mine, and the drive that the 6spd accord offers is immensely better considering the price tag. The other cars in the price range were kind of dull feeling, or low quality. Plus, it's a honda! My only issue with it is honda's declining quality when it comes to the interior and exterior (interior panel rattles, materials, exterior paint, etc), though the drivetrain seems as solid as ever (which is what I really care about in a car that I plan on driving into the ground).

Bleh, it's a honda. I wouldn't describe it as killing, meerly using. I was not knocking anyone for redlining, just saying I don't do it anymore...I drive like an old man at age 22 now! Plus with the I-4 flooring it does little but create noise and burn more gas...my accord moves slow no matter what :naughty::naughty::lmao:
DanL06MT 11-03-2007, 07:32 PM Sometimes I can feel the rev limiter cutting the ignition off at redline just at the moment where I lift off the throttle and disengage the clutch to shift up. So I have tried leaving it in 3rd while flooring it to the redline and not shifting. The rev limiter cuts the ignition and sounds like rapid staccato. bababababababab...! So the engine won't rev more than 100-200 rpm into the red zone while pulling a load in 3rd gear.
I also find the secondary intake runner butterflies don't open at 5000 rpm like they're supposed to unless the pedal is on the floor. The engine will certainly rev to the redline in 1st and 2nd at less than full throttle, but those secondary intake runners don't open, and you don't get that big surge of power unless the pedal is to the metal. This is more noticeable in 3rd gear than in 1st or 2nd. I suspect this is an aspect of the drive-by-wire engine mapping.

I know. He playfully said don't drive it or you'll buy it, I said drive it and buy it. Regardless, the point was the same, it's easy to get hooked on the 6spds.
SiClone 11-08-2007, 10:38 PM I purposely didn't want to try out the 6mt v6 when I test drove the 5mt 4 banger even though the sales lady offered it....

HondaDude 11-09-2007, 06:14 PM Ive had my baby up to 5rpm plenty of times. Its kinda of hard not to driving in the city on the express way. Its like motor speedway in Atlanta. My motto is either floor it or get floored.
