: Proud New Owner--'08 Accord Coupe V-6 6MT
Darth Do'Urden 11-03-2007, 11:51 PM After browsing around a bit, it would appear that I'm one of the only (if not THE only) V-6 Coupe 6-Speed owners here.
I bought her 4 days ago. Alabaster Silver on Black leather (EX-L).
Oh, she's also sportin' Navigation :D.
This ****er HAULS. An absolute blast to drive...the power is simply impressive. Everyone I've taken on a drive has been quite vocal about how amazed they were with the juice it's got.
The Acura-based Navigation is superb, and easy to learn. Same with the Bluetooth. I'm loving both very much. The Navigation made my trip to Dallas a breeze.
The leather is top-notch quality. Very soft and supple.
XM radio rocks. I love the comedy channels.
Very smooth, very quiet, handles terrific, and looks DEAD SEXY.
Only disappointment is the shift knob. Looks pretty hokey, what with the clear plastic on top with white numbers underneath...can't wait for an aluminum/billet knob to hit the street--I'm all over it.
Well, since it seems I'm in the minority even amongst the few '08 owners, questions are welcome.
Oh, first tank of gas yielded 22.7 MPG according to the Trip Computer, and that was with plenty of spirited driving. I expect to see about 24-25 MPG overall w/normal driving after about 7,000 miles or so. (I don't believe I'll get as low as the new '08 EPA rating states, which is 17 City and 25 Highway. NO VCM FTL)
PS:
I forgot about price (knowing that it'll come up). MSRP is $31,145. As a Honda employee at a dealership I paid $30,258. Now, that may not seem like much (especially for an employee), but keep in mind that virtually NO ONE has a V-6 6MT w/Navi COUPE--PERIOD. It's gonna be a rare breed, so I got a fine deal at that price.
I did a 48-month Leadership Purchase Plan (LPP or "RBF") with $2,800 down (trade-in). With TT&L financed in (didn't want to but had to) my payment came out to 430/mo. As of Oct. 31 the 48-month residual on this car was at 51%, the highest it's ever been. This results in a lower attainable payment (but obviously higher balance at the end of the 48-month term).
Jimbo 11-04-2007, 03:58 AM Darth,
Congrats! I'm getting the same, hopefully before December, except mine will be all Black. Post some pix when you get a chance.

ps - I like your sig quote about truth. Do you know who said this?
krazyfiend 11-04-2007, 05:56 AM congrats on your purchase and welcome to the club... post pics when you can!
thanks for the buyers info too, it's nice to compare what an employee at a dealer grabbed one for.

I sure don't. I've known this quote for so long that it's kinda become "mine", as I can't find who said it.
Glad ya like it. =)

alpha 11-04-2007, 07:14 AM Nice!! The new coupes are nice..
You're not the only one here with a 6speed. Though, it is rare.. There's a few 6 speed 7th gen coupes around here, but you may be the first on the board with an 08 6 speed.
Congrats on the new car!
HondaPOD 11-04-2007, 07:28 AM Nice man! I like it :D
jang859 11-04-2007, 08:43 AM so what exactly is that thing at the bottom of the steering wheel that looks like a speaker, i could never get a straight answer on that.
HondaPOD 11-04-2007, 08:45 AM so what exactly is that thing at the bottom of the steering wheel that looks like a speaker, i could never get a straight answer on that.
Just for style. It's like a mesh grill.
Jimbo 11-04-2007, 02:32 PM My guess would have been a "reverse speaker" aka microphone for the Bluetooth remote phone.
Great pictures! Those are probably the best interior pics of the car I have seen yet. It looks fantastic in silver. I think the silver/black interior is the best combo and is exactly what I would buy. I would not buy the navigation system though, I think it's too expensive. You can buy a Garmin Nuvi 770 that does everything the OEM nav does, plus it's portable so if you ever sell the car you don't loose your navigation system. And of course you can take it with you from car to car. But that's just personal preference. I hear the Honda navs are the best, so I couldn't fault anyone for buying the option if they are directionally challenged (like I am).
I may be nit picking here, but it's too bad Honda did away with the perforated steering wheel and seats on the 6-speed model. That is a really nice sporty touch for the sporty model. I really like the look in my car.
Hopefully you won't have any first year gremlins pop up. You'll have to let us know how the car holds up. Definitely the best looking coupe to ever come from Honda, hands down.
HondaPOD 11-04-2007, 03:08 PM Why are you teasing me with your car?? :bawl:
lol. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
F23A4 11-04-2007, 04:34 PM Congrats Darth!! Nice purchase. I stopped by Open Road Honda and sat in one identical to yours. Beautiful ride.

Oh, I realize that. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I only meant that it seemed that I was the only '08 6-Speed. Sorry 'bout the confusion. =)

I'm fine with aftermarket wheels, lip kits, performance mods, etc., but when it comes to having to mount something in the interior (like an external GPS unit)...I'm out. I don't like aftermarket headunits, either. I prefer stock (if the system is nice enough to begin with). I prefer OEM when it comes to something like Navi and stereo, so for the fit-and-finish and quality of the product, I find a lot of value in the extra $2,000 OEM Navi/Bluetooth.

Same here. I was kinda disappointed they eliminated the perforated seats, but these are so freakin' nice I've gotten over it quickly. =)

This is the first time I've been "first on the block with the new toy" as it were, so yeah, I'm hoping the gremlins at least leave mine alone. =P
Thanks for all the congrats and warm welcome. I look forward to being a part of helping the 8th Gen section of this site grow nicely.
Darth Do'Urden 11-04-2007, 08:31 PM My guess would have been a "reverse speaker" aka microphone for the Bluetooth remote phone.
The microphone is mounted discreetly overhead between the map lights. That mic serves both the Bluetooth and the Navi. "Bitchin' Betty" is the same voice for both. =P
It looks beautiful! I hope in the near future to join you in the 08 coupe club:dude:
And I certainly hope you dont get any gremlins either. I'm still trying to decide on what dealership to go to for my purchase, I hope to find a good one that is NICE.

Please, do yourself and the sales consultant a favor...buy from the one that treats you the best. Sure, that may sound obvious, but note that I did NOT say buy from the one that "gives you the best deal". In the end and several years from now it's the EXPERIENCE that you'll remember most vividly, not the 500 dollars you saved by allowing a place to "buy your business" instead of "earning it" through excellent service, respect, and service-after-the-sale.

Great ride. Congrats on the purchase.
portablecow 11-07-2007, 06:09 PM I noticed you purchased from Fowler. That's where I got my Civic. Okay place.
I completely agree with you about finding the dealer/sales rep that gives you the best experience. Unfortunately the best experience with a dealer I've ever had was with Fowler Toyota up the street. You'd think dealerships that share the same name (not sure if they are owned/managed by the same people) could share the same customer experience.
Anyway, congrats on the new Accord purchase. Hopefully I'll be heading to the dealer soon to trade in my Civic.
Oh, one question for you. How do you like the back seats? Passengers are always complaining about the back seat in my Civic coupe so I'm hoping the back seat in the Accord coupe are a bit more bearable.
Darth Do'Urden 11-07-2007, 08:21 PM I completely agree with you about finding the dealer/sales rep that gives you the best experience. Unfortunately the best experience with a dealer I've ever had was with Fowler Toyota up the street. You'd think dealerships that share the same name (not sure if they are owned/managed by the same people) could share the same customer experience.
To be fair, the customer also brings a lot to the table in terms of how pleasant the experience is. The burden is not solely upon the dealership.
You may have had a better experience at Fowler Toyota for a myriad of reasons. Some of them could be personality and emotionally based, others could have to do with more concrete things like prices and trade values. To wholly blame the dealer is highly unfair and not very realistic except in the most extreme of cases.
Both stores are owned by the Fowlers. Customer service is, by and large, very different. I've heard a lot of people express their displeasure to me personally about how Toyota treated 'em ("pushy", "felt like an interrogation", "Are you buying now? If not, get the hell out"). Of course I'm sure the same has been said about us there at Honda. Fact is people are all different and personalities sometimes clash. But please bear in mind that the customer brings a lot to the relationship in how they are ultimately treated (or more importantly perceive to be treated).
I'm actually a salesperson at Fowler Honda for a few more weeks. I'd be more than happy to help you out if you want to trade in your Civic towards a new Accord.
Oh, one question for you. How do you like the back seats? Passengers are always complaining about the back seat in my Civic coupe so I'm hoping the back seat in the Accord coupe are a bit more bearable.
My wife and kids all say that the back is quite comfortable with plenty of head room. I've ridden in the back myself (6'1") and I've been impressed with the head room as well (don't have to crane my neck). However, like all coupes, if you're sitting behind a tall person then your legs are gonna likely feel the squeeze a bit. But that's really only if the person in front of you is like 6'3" or so.
Definitely better than the Civic, though.
Darth Do'Urden 11-11-2007, 09:54 AM Ok, an update for everyone. Finally got some daytime pics of a clean and tinted car. Debadge still to come. =)

You'll notice in the picture of the back window that the brake light had to be cut around for the tint. Tint shop said the design was too deep in regards to the brake light for their tools to reach far enough down, therefore they had to cut around the light assembly. Looks good enough, though. 15% tint all around. I wanted 10% but the place didn't carry it, and 5% was just too expensive.
Bouncnb 11-11-2007, 11:52 AM Question about your tint.
Did they take the tint to the top of the side windows or did they leave about a quarter inch gap around the top of the window edge? You know the area that goes up inside the sealing area. Also, did they put it below the lower seal?
Thanks

A quarter inch is a huge gap for a window. It should be no larger than an 1/8th of an inch gap. Unless things changed, filing voids the manufacturer warranty on the film. And any tint shop that leaves a gap above the lower seal needs to go out of business.. That is inexcusable.
About the third brake light, can that not be removed?
stevencrosbie 11-11-2007, 05:52 PM Very good looking car. I love the Coupe! I'd never own a coupe as I have to have 4 doors, but by far, this is one of the best looking coupes on the market.
I wish I could say the same for the sedan. Enjoy your new car :) It is very nice.

Yep, sedan was a step in the wrong direction but the coupe was a step in the right direction!
Hopefully Honda will stop this problem they have with making every generation of Accord bigger than the one before, because right now the coupe is as big a car as I would ever own at 190 inches. Since I have no plans of ever having a family (not a kid person) I'll always be able to drive a coupe, and Honda will be off my list when I'm ready to buy another if the next generation gets any longer, wider, or heavier.
Darth Do'Urden 11-11-2007, 07:04 PM About the third brake light, can that not be removed?
The tint guy (who's VERY reputable and does a fabulous job every time) said because the brake light was integrated into the rear dashboard area it would ALL have to be removed. Problem there is with the side-curtain airbags. So it had to be cut around...to my dismay. Turned out ok, but I wish was ALL coverd...=/

Hrmmmm interesting...my guys managed to cover the whole window without cutting around the 3rd brake light. They do all the cutting and shaping on the outside of the glass and then get inside the car to do their magic!
You car looks great! I think it's a must to tint the windows. Notice all the commercials the windows are practically all blacked out in tint!
Darth Do'Urden 11-15-2007, 06:58 PM Update: First Mod
Well, I decided to find out if the billet aluminum shift knob from my former RSX would fit the new Accord. The result is a much better looking success! Enjoy the pics. The flash shots really made stuff look wierd, so pay no mind to the odd colors and what-not.
Here's a "before" shot for reference, then the "afters" follow:

chanke4252 11-15-2007, 08:30 PM Actually, I prefer the stock knob to those straight billet knobs that everyone likes. It fit with your interior a lot better. I had a momo-anatomico which fit my interior pretty nicely, but swapped it out for a TL-S knob which I like a lot better looks-wise. I loved the way the anatomico knob felt though with the full leather in a golf-club type shape, I just hated the way it mounted.
I also definately agree with you about the interior thing. Getting one w/o nav would make a lot of that space where your nav unit is now, wasted, and you would have to add a nav unit somewhere else to get the exact same functionality. The thing about the 8th gen is it looks like there aren't as many places to mount something like that and have it look nice. At least we (7th gen guys) had the pretty substantially sized cubby to do stuff like that with.
Do you have any plans to do anything to it? I would add the honda lips and side skirts, maybe lower it a little bit when 8th genners have some spring/shock or coilover options.
My guess is that those tires are going to give out pretty quickly though if they are at all similar to the 215/50/17 hx mxm4's that came with my car. They were ok for about 7k, then got progressively worse and worse over the next 7k till they were the worst tires I've ever driven on. I hope that is not the case with yours.
I am also curious to see how the 8th gen brakes hold up and whether or not the 8th gen has issues with the pads warping the hell out of the rotors in only a few thousand miles. Hopefully they fixed that.
Anyway, again, looks great. I like your car a ton better than the 08 sedans. Neither are quite my style, but the coupe is definately an attractive car. Some of those pics make the coupe look better than any of the other pics I've seen. Debadging it should make it look a lot better. Why they chose that ugly ass font for the 8th gen badging is beyond me.

How does the RSX shifter feel compared to the Stock one? Does it lower the height or is it taller? Thats what i want to really know.

Since it's smaller than the stock knob it seems to lower the height just a tad bit. But overall it's nicer simply because of that smaller size. Not nearly as bulky and cheesy as the stock one.
FYI...the S2000 and Si knobs should fit fine as well, so....

the S2000 shifter feels good and im sure is smaller in height.

chanke4252 11-17-2007, 12:43 AM skunk2 makes knobs similar to those (billet), only they look a little more substantial and not so plain. They should also be cheaper. I believe they are screw on and use a nut to fasten them in place much like the 7th gen 6mt knob (and I think the s2k and other billet honda knobs too, though maybe I'm wrong). One thing I didn't like about the metal that my oem 6mt shifter was made out of was that it seemed to be very vulnerable to corrosion and pitting and looked very bad after a while. I am not sure if the billet honda knobs are made out of the same material or how they stand up to having a sweaty hand handling them. The TL knob I have now has some metal on the top and exibits no signs of wear, so I'm happy, plus I don't burn my hand.
I kind of liked the stock 8th gen 6spd knob. It had a big shifter, and looked easier for those who use a pistol grip. I prefer a big shifter (big hands), it just feels better to me. It did look a little plasticy though, though I was NEVER offput by it.
Darth Do'Urden 11-17-2007, 05:39 AM IF the S2000 shifter will fit then i am definately doing that upgrade.
How easy is it to Install these things?
First, chanke is correct:
I believe they are screw on and use a nut to fasten them in place much like the 7th gen 6mt knob (and I think the s2k and other billet honda knobs too, though maybe I'm wrong).
Second, here's what I did:
1. Remove shift knob by pulling down on the small ring at the base of the shift knob. Unscrew shift knob.
2. Remove center console panel. This is done at the front end by grabbing the power outlet and small storage cubby doors and pulling up. Working your way towards the back end, the vertical plastic panel that sits in front of the armrest needs to be disconnected by pulling up on the top section. Remove the panel (don't forget to unplug the seat heaters and power outlet).
3. Invert the shift boot to expose the zip-tie that's around the plastic ring. Carefully cut zip-tie and remove plastic ring.
4. Place a rubber grommet over the shift shaft. The grommet needs to be wide enough in diameter to keep the new plastic ring (that came with my aluminum shift knob from Honda) or the shift boot itself from falling down once installation is complete. The grommet also needs to have a small enough hole so as to not fall itself.
5. Zip-tie shift boot around the new plastic ring and re-invert to proper position.
6. Place center console panel back in place (don't forget to plug in the seat heaters and power outlet). Plastic ring should not go too far down.
7. Put on locking screw.
8. Put on shift knob.
9. Tighten locking screw against shift knob, but do so low enough so that the shift boot will also be snug against the bottom of the shift knob once complete.
I would have taken pictures for a nice complete DIY, but I was at work when I did it.
I've had this same OEM aluminum shift knob for over a year now...no signs of where at all.
I kind of liked the stock 8th gen 6spd knob. It had a big shifter, and looked easier for those who use a pistol grip.
Pistol grip method is one of the leading causes of mis-shifts.

chanke4252 11-17-2007, 02:57 PM I've had this same OEM aluminum shift knob for over a year now...no signs of where at all.
Pistol grip method is one of the leading causes of mis-shifts.
I had mine on for about a year, and it looked ok, but there were a few signs of excessive wear to the top of the knob where it was billet. I've seen a few pics of people with the stock 6spd knobs after a few years, and some of them are just plain nasty looking. The top is grey and almost looked rusty. I don't know if it is because they weren't machined smoothly enough or what. I have no idea if the full billet knobs suffer from that as well, I'm sure it depends on the knob.
As far as pistol grip, I like using a pistol grip for 1-2 shifts, but I do agree that using it for every shift would probably make for more frequent misshifting. I like it pistol grip shifting because it really lets you put the lateral pressure on the shifter that you need for really confident gear engagements for certain shifts. A lot of people I think use a pistol grip because it's hypermasculine and "cool". I use it for 1-2, then I grip from the top of the shift for 2-3-4, then almost a reverse pistol grip for 4-5-6. I've never misshifted in my life, I have no idea how people accomplish frequent and careless misshifts like they do, and I never cease to be dumbfounded when I hear that someone has blown their engine at the track because they accidentally shifted into first when they meant to hit third (similar to what you said, this is no doubt due to overuse of a pistol grip).

chanke4252 11-17-2007, 05:33 PM Generally debadging looks a little bit off, but for the 08's, I thought that the badging made it look a bit off. It definately looks a bit more normal debadged I think, in a good way. Definately looks plain, but better plain than having something that doesn't really look the part. I hate the badging for the 08's.

I think the term you were lookin' for is "clean".

Because if you take the 'H' off then there's two holes left...it's not just glued on like the others.
I'd like to have both 'H's off...the front is actually more feasible some time in the future by putting in a different grill.
The rear 'H' would require bondo work and whatnot, and I'm just not a fan of that.

Ah... damn, I was hoping there were no holes....
De-badge tomorrow and tint next weekend. Thanks!

Make sure when you have it tinted that they don't cut around the 3rd brake light. Have them pull it out and put it back in.
And if they say can't do it, show them a picture of my rear window!

Can you put the Sedans Grill on the Coupe? Would it fit?

Darth Do'Urden 11-18-2007, 03:24 PM Can you put the Sedans Grill on the Coupe? Would it fit?
No. Literally the only thing the Coupe and Sedan share (exterior) are the side mirrors and door handles.

Uh, they laughed when I asked about the rear window light cutout. They never do a cutout and that Honda makes it easy to tint the whole window.
Getting rear windows and door windows tinted. Will post Picks on Saturday along w/ De-badging:thmsup:
Darth Do'Urden 11-19-2007, 09:00 PM Every one else getting their rear window tinted without cutting around the brake light is really starting to piss me off now. I know my tint guy is good at what he does...but I'm highly unimpressed with his inability (or unwillingness?) to do what's necessary to not cut around.
Grrrrrrrr.....>=(
Lookin' forward to the pics!

you could probably do that small area yourself relatively easily if that brake light trim comes out. You'd even have a template if that is the case.

I also want to find someone who uses Black Vinyl to do the dot-matrix area with it instead of actual tint. I friggin' HATE the milky look that's there right now. Black Vinyl makes it look absolutely gorgeous...had it on my RSX...WILL have it again on my Accord.

I'm with ya on that...i've been comparing lots of newer cars to see how they have their rear windows patterned out...most have ditched that dot matrix type pattern at the top...it's such a nuisance when tint is applied

Interesting. That is what the tinters said they were going to do, use black vinyl at the dotted area. I just nodded and figured they knew what the were doing! Sounds like I picked the right place! I guess there is truth in their name... TintPros!
MasterRyu 11-20-2007, 11:25 AM Good Pictures. I still haven't tinted mine.
chanke4252 11-20-2007, 10:20 PM black vinyl can look nice and you really won't even notice it. I need to have mine replace as the shop I went to was total garbage. The tint is good quality, the TINT was put on well enough, but they damaged my door release cables and were apparently drunk when applying the vinyl. Mine has the same issues in some areas that the tint had, though it is just in some areas, and you can by the pattern that it is from a lackluster squeegee job.

How far down does this vinyl get placed? Is it noticeable once the window is tinted?

I was told it will match the dotmatrix line

Could you please post a pic when it is completed? Thanks

Will do. Having it done Saturday am.
Darth Do'Urden 11-21-2007, 09:10 PM The black vinyl goes over the dot-matrix area only. Where the dots end the vinyl ends. The tint is then applied ever so slightly overlapping the vinyl. Looks amazingly better than tint over the dot-matrix, and the only way you will ever notice is if you are in the back seat and you tilt your head back to look straight up.
Take my word for it...DO THE BLACK VINYL ON THE DOT-MATRIX. =)
Bouncnb 11-22-2007, 05:22 AM Cool, I found a place in North Philly that looks like they do good work and they said that they do the vinyl. Also, has anyone figured out if the felt stuff is on the front window seals on the 8th gen? (The ones ones that causes the scratches over time.)

paulisme 01-28-2008, 06:41 AM Update: First Mod
Well, I decided to find out if the billet aluminum shift knob from my former RSX would fit the new Accord. The result is a much better looking success! Enjoy the pics. The flash shots really made stuff look wierd, so pay no mind to the odd colors and what-not.
Here's a "before" shot for reference, then the "afters" follow:

i really like the look of the aluminum knob vs the stock one. i find the stock knob awkward to handle and really aesthetically unappealing. was the install simple? im thinkin about gettin the skunk2 billet shift knob since it looks similar to that and it's got a nice weight to it. i dont wanna get it tho if i have to replace the rings and boot tho haha.
