View Full Version : New Owner of a Red V6 MT Coupe! Say Howdie!

Hey folks, Dave from Seattle here.

I buy and trade cars pretty often...cars that I've owned in the past include a Mitsi 3000 VR4, BMW Z3, Acura TL Type S, Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO, and, until today (!) a MazdaSpeed 6.

I really liked the Mazda, but there were some dealbreakers...93 octane fuel required for optimim performance (not sold here in WA; I was reduced to adding Toulene), loud wind/road noise, hesitation at WOT, tricky clutch and sub-par interior.

I owned it for a year and was looking to trade...I drove a Pontiac Soltice GSX (no trunk/storage) and a new 'Vette (too pricy though still a performance bargain)...I have been reading about the 08 Accord Coupe for a while now but thought I'd never end up in a front-wheel drive car. I was actually waiting on the new BMW1 with the twin-turbo engine.

I've been reading about the new coupe for a while and was mildly interested, but only mildly, as I didn't want to end up in what I considered more of a middle of the road bread and butter coupe. The other night I was doing a search of inventories of 08 V6 MT Accord Coupes, not really expecting to find one, but I did last night and called the dealership who said they had taken delivery that day.

Long story short...lots of haggling...they put a 2500. extra sticker price on it and of course wanted to downplay my MS6, but we finally reached a deal at MSRP and off I drove.

By that time, I had test-driven the car 3 times. I am really impressed by this car. My previous beliefs about it being a whitebread car for the masses went out the window. While it doesn't have the immediate thrust of my turbo 6 with a CAI system, it builds power steadily and progressively and very satisfyingly. The tranny is undoubtedly the smoothest I've ever operated. The steering is much lighter. The interior is logically laid out and the materials seem to be of high quality. I find the looks of the car drop dead sexy. I am really happy with the car...having driven it all of 20 miles!!!...and look forward to hopefully being satisfied enough with it that I'm not prowling the car lots a year from now, though given my history...!!!

A couple of beefs...I'm a Sirius fan and miss Howard Stern and hope the merger goes through and I don't have to buy an aftermarket unit...I was surprised that the car, having just about every feature you would want, doesn't include an info center, giving instant gas mileage, miles left to the tank, average ful economy, etc...finally, and most importantly, on the way home from the dealership I noticed a very distict rattle coming from the passenger side. Not metallic. Couldn't pinpoint the exact location, but it's very pronounced. Not worried, though, as I'm sure the dealership will take care of it.

My MS6 was meant for speed. This car is a really well engineered combination of performance and comfort and I feel like I got a good deal on it and am a very proud new owner and happy to be a member of your great forum!!

Now, can someone tell me how to make it faster??? LOL!!!

Welcome to DA Ballard. Where did you get your car from? I'm live in Seattle also and drive an awesome V6 MT!

Make sure if wasn't the passenger side seat belt end folded over on itself , bouncing between the side card and seat.

lots of new 6mt owners on these boards. That's good to see.

Faster?!?! :lmao:

You'd think the 5.7sec run to 60 would be fast enough lol.

I'm sure a CAI and some grippier tires would be a good start. ;-). You'll probably have to give the aftermarket some time to get engine performance parts out. :)

.....tires would sure help getting down. more power down that is.

Road and Track published 5.9 to 60. Somehow I missed the 5.7 source.

great car, ez....

Faster?!?! :lmao:

You'd think the 5.7sec run to 60 would be fast enough lol.

At a recent night at the local 1/4-mile drag strip, I saw a stock Mazdaspeed 6 run consistent 14.1-14.0 times, and multiple current-model GTOs were running in the low-to-mid-'13's. These times are much faster than the V6 Accord's, which is about a 14.5 car (a very respectable time). So I can see why the O.P. would want more power. Only difference from the above cars is that in the Accord all that power is going thru the front tires... :paranoid:

The EXL Navi has the Trip Computer in the Information Screen :)

Congrats on the new car! It only gets better with each drive!

Hey Honda 761, I found mine at Honda of Kirkland.

The salesperson was a kindly "grandfather" type and the sales manager was a slick young shark. I help my ground, though, and finally got the deal I went it for.

+1

Im surprised this guy feels that the car is not quick enough. It pulls 0-60 less than 6sec which is limited because of traction. All I get is wheel spins in 1 and 2nd gears... But if you would like to know how to make it faster.. Heres what you can do

1. I can GUARANTEE that by putting UHP tires you will shave out about 0.2~0.3 seconds off the 0-60 and get better 1/4 mile times too. I myself am about to Install UHP tires.

2. The STOCK Wheels on the Accord are HEAVY. I would put Lightweight ENEKI Rims (about 17pounds each). That should chop about 40~50 pounds of total weight off the car and minimize the loss of HP from Crank to Wheels

3. PREMIUM gas will give you about 4~6 HP. I used premium 93 when i got my 6MT Dynoed it was doing about 5HP more on the charts.

4. Air Intake should give u about 6~8HP but that wont be available untill sometimes next year.

So those are the some of the things you can do to get more HP and better launch times. With all those mods im preey sure the accord will do 0-60 in 5.5 or less. Again being a FWD car I dont think its going to get any faster than that unless Honda make it a RWD. HONDA are already pushing the limits with FWD.

Congrats on your new Accord! You made a wise purchase.

My family has owned every generation Accord except the 1st & 5th. IMO, the 8th generation Accord is the best yet. And your 6MT coupe is the highest performing Accord ever made. You get quality, value, comfort, features, reliability, aesthetics and performance all rolled up into one.

FYI, if you open your hood and look a few inches below your valve cover, you will see an aluminum surface protruding from the engine block. Stamped on it will be your engine code and below that will be your engine serial number.

You should see J35Z3 stamped on the aluminum surface. This is the best engine Honda offers IMO. It's probably still too early for mods, but when they become available, I'd suggest:

* ECU reflash w/premium fuel calibration
* Open air intake system
* Headers & exhaust sytem (maybe from Borla)
* Limited slip differential (maybe from TL Type-S)
* Brembo front brakes (again, maybe from TL Type-S)
* Sticky summer tires (maybe Goodyear Eagle F1 or equivalent)
* Thicker anti-roll bars front & rear

A dyno tune wouldn't hurt either. If you can get all or most of your power to the ground, you should be doing well. As your car is stock, it traps the quarter mile in 101.6 mph (http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=123357/pageNumber=1). It's just traction disadvantaged.

Thanks, Fireball, that's really helpful information!

I just want my car to go faster.."is that so wrong?" LOL!! I love my new toy but I'm used to faster cars. On the forums I belonged to before...the GTO, the SRT-4, the Corvette...it was ALL about going faster, but I realize that these were specialty cars and so speed was the predominate discussion.

I've owned it now for 3 days and it just keeps getting better!

........consider this: now you have a car that combines performance with fuel economy.

That has been the case with my 6M. Better numbers that my (60's) 'Vette. And on the Interstate (you'd have trouble believing the numbers).

great car,

..ez..
