View Full Version : 2005 Accord EX - Whining noise on start up, turning
o2fstball 12-01-2007, 12:33 PM I have a 2005 Accord EX. Purchased the car with 36k miles, now has 50k on it. Bought the car in April 2007.
Recently, as it has been colder (in Chicago) when starting the car there is a loud whine, which happens when the car is starting and cold. The noise gets worse when turning, and turning is difficult and noisy until the car warms up.
Taking the car in on Monday to get it looked at. Anyone have experience with this issue, or taking it to the dealer when the car is over the 12,000 mileage certified warranty?
Have read some posts about Power Steering Pump, as well as a couple of other things. Just looking for some things to keep in mind when taking it to the dealer. Power Steering fluid level is fine.

What are the temperatures up there now? I can only speculate but it sounds like the power steering pump. If the temperatures are freezing then there is probably moisture in the PS fluid that is freezing. I would have it flushed/replaced and that should take care of the noise.
If it can take Automatic Transmission Fluid (most cars can, not sure about Hondas) then use a synthetic ATF from AMSOIL or M1.

Honda only approves Honda P/S fluid.
o2fstball 12-01-2007, 10:11 PM The problem happened in the fall..so the temps were not freezing at that point..but since the temp. has been dropping (20 or so right not) the noise has not gone away.
Accordlover 12-01-2007, 10:22 PM Does the alternator run on the same belt as the P/S unit? I can't remember.
I had the same thing happen to one of my previous cars. I added a small amount of power steering fluid and the noise stopped.
Check your power steering fluid. It's possible that the fluid level is a bit low. Cold temperatures might be a contributing factor since the fluid will contract somewhat in the cold.
If you add fluid, make sure you use Honda PS fluid.
o2fstball 12-04-2007, 03:25 PM I brought the car into the dealership..the same place I purchased the car. The car is a Certified Used Accord, and I was about 1500 miles over the 12k mile bumper to bumper warranty.
Turns out the power steering pump is "fried", and so are the bearings. The dealership is going to replace the pump, bearings, and everything else that could have been effected by the corrosion, etc....free of charge.
For once, good news!

Merry Christmas, LOL.
That is great news.
Now that is how you make a happy customer.
