Previously, all Honda models had either a 4x100, 4x114.3, or a 5x114.3 lug patttern, correct me if I'm wrong? Well when an Odyclub.com member tried to put his 2000 AV6 wheel (5x114.3) onto his new '05 Odyssey it didn't fit. We found out that the new Odyssey uses a 5x120 pattern, which is the same as BMW. However BMW wheels don't fit because they use a 12mm diameter stud and the Odyssey is a 14mm. Anyone know why they would go to a new lug pattern and is this the start of a new era for Honda?!

Well yeah but the thing just didn't make sense to me at all. Here's what we know about this minivan (which will probably rack up miles quickly and therefore need tires often, and also be used for trips in the winter, necessitating snow tires).

-The bolt pattern is 5x120 but BMW wheels don't fit. Therefore, only ONE wheel in all of tirerack.com fits it, and it's costly and it's 17".

-The Touring comes with the Michelin PAX system, where there is only one possible tire you could fit to it at the moment and it costs a lot of money.

-Therefore if you want to run the Touring in the winter you need to buy a new set of wheels (of which there is only one available on the aftermarket, and there are NONE available from other Honda or BMW or Mercedes or Audi models), and you drive around without any spare tire and no runflats - bad in the winter.

-Your tire replacement costs on the Touring will be high.

-Your wheel choices are limited.

Does this make sense to you guys?????? It doesn't to me....

I don't know why Honda made the change. I'll have to assume it was for a good reason though.

Well, snow is a mere 4 hours away, very irresistable for most. Thanksgiving weekend, you will see so many people on the road up to the mountains, it will be an average of only about 15-20MPH all the way on the highway. That's assuming the highway is devoid of any snow and it's clear and open :D

Find out anything else about the new bolt pattern, Ben?

You know more about Odys than I'll ever know - heck more than most folks know, I'd say - so I figure you'll figure it out soon enough. :)

No clue yet...but my educated guess is that the next gen MDX/Pilot/Ridgeline/RDX will also be using the same pattern.

about the PAX system, there was no room in the van for a spare, they used up that space for the in floor "lazy susan" storage compartment.
they also figured (at least in some articles I've read) that it's a safety selling point.
The PAX system also requires the use of a special tire machine, which as of a couple of months ago, not all dealerships had, and the tire/wheel assy was on an exchange basis.
Maybe they deliberatly changed the bolt pattern to keep people from putting regular wheels on that van or to keep PAX rims off other cars. Or it could be an upgrade to handle more torque. Larger distance lugs (larger as well) can handle more torque from the engine, than smaller lugs at smaller spacing.

The '98 to '02 V6 car transmissions (4 spd auto) had issues with differential carrier bearing failure. I just installed one in my room mates '98 Accord, albeit with 160k all highway miles, when the thing ground itself to pieces, it was a long time in coming tho.

The 5 speed autos in Acura CL & TL, Pilots, MDX, Odyssey had a recall to install a jet kit (replaces the fill plug on top of the unit) to lube a gear in the unit that was starved for oil. The gear was to be inspected for discoloration and damaged, digital pictures were taken and it then was compared to reference pics to determine if the trans needed to be replaced. I've seen some that also have neutraling problems when coming to a stop and going around corners.
In all '04 and up units the upgraded lube system for the gear is now internal.

my guess, is that this wheel patern eliminates aftermarket options right now, thus keeping intact the PAX system on stock wheels.. I'm also guessing the PAX system helps honda in the aspect of the oncomming required tire pressure monitoring systems.
