What do you call the metal thingy you put on the back (and for some the front ) of your car?

License plate?

Tag?

Or something other? If so, what?

Since you said metal. If it's paper I call it a tag(temp tag)
There may be new terminology soon since several states are going to plastic/vinyl!

Ohio has their own special yellow plate for repeat DUI offenders
"Scarlet Letter" so to speak!

I've read about those. TN is considering doing the same.

Have you seen any on the street?

i usually think of tags as being more like the registration stickers that go on our plates... :)

so for me the metal thingy is a plate! ;)

Here it's a plate & the registration sticker is the tag.

We HAVE to put them on the front too!:( We didn't for the first year or so on our first new one..... then finally got a ticket. He rigged up a holder from underneath so he wouldn't be drilling into the bumper....had it signed off & removed it!

Now they have the place for them & there's no point to not putting them on....

I WISH they'd do a special plate for DUI's!! Then I'd know who to avoid!;) Of course, my luck, they'd been in some else's car.... that's what happened when we were hit by one a LOOOOONNNNGGG time ago!

Are your plate alpha-numeric, alpha or just numeric?

Nebraska has two types of plate numbers - Alpha-numeric for the three 'large population' counties and numeric by county for rest.

Example - in the county where Omaha, Lincoln and Omaha's suburbs the plate would be something along the lines of: NTS 445

In rest of the counties it would be something along the line of 21-DE34.

The old numbering system was put into place in the 1930's based on the number of cars in that county - as a result, the larger counties ran out of numbers and had to go to the alpha-numeric system. Folks were very resistant as they had to abandon their '1', '2', and '59' county plates.
