I've done some searching on this site and found that upgrading to the 17mm rear sway bar (from the previous gen TL) is a quick and easy modification that anyone can do with hand tools.

Is there any issue with warranty if I go ahead with the modification? I just purchased my Accord last month, so I'm wondering if I should wait a few years and then do the mod or go ahead and do it now.

Interesting... I just got off the phone with one of the service guys at the Acura dealership where I took my Integra. He told me that they don't recommend doing that sort of work anymore because a few years back an RL owner had them upgrade the sway bars and springs and had problems. Apparently, the mounting points for the sway bars started to crack because of the increased stress (due to the stiffer sway bar).

Anyone who has upgraded their sway bar have any issues? In particular, I'm interested in hearing from people who have had it for a while (i.e. over 2 years).

As a side note, he told me that he got has a 7th gen V6 MT sedan. I told him I was envious because that's what I was shopping for, but didn't find any in the area when I bought mine a month ago. He agreed that he had a hard time finding one as well, but really likes it.

There are a couple issues when installing a new sway bar. The main one is to not over tighten the bolts. If you do, you can run into issues like the guy at the Acura dealer explained. There are too many unknowns with that story like how much was the car lowered with new springs or what size the RL owner upgraded the sway bar to. It had to not be so large a sway bar that the dealership didn't think it could cause the mounts to crack. Other than that it had to have been installed incorrectly; either the bushing clamps where too tight, endlink bolts too tight or both. A 17 or 20 mm bar isn't going to be too much for the suspension if installed correctly and your suspension has no pre-existing issues.

I don't recall any accord owners having issues with either the 17mm bar or the 20mm bar. Comptech makes a 22mm bar which I would be a little nervous to put on, but I really doubt there would be any problems w/ that either.

Hi,

Can I change the subject slightly?
I have a 2001. Are there sway bar mod's available for myn, too (Ones that use an Acura's bars)?

Thanks for the replies. I agree that there might have been other contributing factors to that story about the RL.

My other question still stands... will replacing the sway bar affect any warranty coverage?

I've had my 17mm anti sway bar for well over two years with zero issues. The only way it could affect warranty is if they could prove that the part itself directly caused a problem. Look up The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

I'm running the TSX comptech bar which is the exact curve of the Accord bar (the TL bars are different and impact the car, specifically on the 05 lx auto sedan.. and some others)
I love mine, but install at your own risk:banana:

I installed the TL type-s rear 20mm yesterday and the car handles great. I have a 03 V6 4dr. The frame I dont think would be able to have problems with the sway bar.

I had a 98 A4 V6 q and I tore the rear subframe apart from my swaybar. It was 15mm over stock though. thanks neuspeed for putting in alot a research before selling a part... they now offer a smaller on by 7mm and they come with frame reinforcements.

Ps with dual exhaust it is a pain to figure out how to get the bar in lol
