I'm on the prowl for a 6MT Coupe and they seem pretty popular around here. So, if no one minds I'll post anything I think is a good deal. When I suddenly stop you'll know I'm in the market;)
Here's one I know I'd pounce on if I was ready to buy.
2006, no Navigation
$17,395 on Autotrader (AT-DF3CBE7).
$17,150 Buy it Now on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBTOX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=290196616721&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI)
37,240 miles. VIN: 1HGCM81646A000994 The only problem I can see is that it seems to be missing the shift knob and there aren't any pictures of keys or manuals. Seller has good feedback.

I don't know. I can't imagine they'd go much lower. $17,100 is below NADA, Edmunds AND KBB Trade 'value'.
Here's (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=235145673&dealer_id=602713&model=ACCORD&make2=&start_year=2006&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=y&fuel=&search_type=certified&distance=0&make=HONDA&color=&min_price=&body_style=COUPE&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=2&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2007&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=)another 2006 6MT Coupe. Wow, that is dirt cheap for an 06 V6 6MT. When I was looking just 4 months ago, they were $20K+

CaptainVideo, I am originally from Harrisburg and have dealt with Bobby Rahal numerous times years ago. IMO they are a little pricey, but very easy to work with and I had really good experiences w/ their sales dept. (and service, as my Aunt bought a car from them; I am guessing that may not matter much to you depending on your location, though).
And to sweeten the pot, the forumer on here JwesG2 (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/member.php?u=1348) works for their dealership family and may be able to help you out.
*Wes, I get some $ if this works out. ;)

Well, like I said I'm not in the market yet. Wish I was though!
I was stationed in Carlisle Barracks 20 years ago (damn! Am I THAT old?) and may have driven by the dealership.

here you go
I finally found the Ridgeline I want to buy (from a private seller) so I need to sell my Accord. I was hoping to get about $20,000 Now I am down to $18,500 for the car since I paid over $32K OTD in November 2005, but I am willing to work a little with it depending on whether or not you want the factor extended warranty transferred and want to winter tires with steel rims.
Even if you aren't interested in the car, let me know if you think this deal is fair or not. I also have it posted on Autotrader.
It does have 41K miles on it but runs great, I never had any problems.
I change my own oil using Mobile 1 oil.
OEM fog lights, splash guard, trunk tray, auto dimming mirror and wheel locks.
Anyone in the Albany NY area is welcome to test drive it.
I have to take some more pics this weekend if I can. I haven't really taken any lately and this is all I have at work.
I have a couple of very small dings from parking lot mishaps (I didn't see who did it, just came out and there was a ding) I think from carts and doors.
I think a lot of these pictures were taken a while ago, but here they are anyway.

NOT recent mileage: Car has a little over 41K miles on it now.

Hmm. An '06 Sedan for $16,800 (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=232477533&dealer_id=61365159&car_year=2006&model=ACCORD&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&start_year=2006&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&only_price=1&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=&make=HONDA&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceASC&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2006&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=20000&cardist=367) is tempting.
49K miles is a lot for an '06 Coupe, but $16,870 (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=232477533&dealer_id=61365159&car_year=2006&model=ACCORD&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&start_year=2006&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&only_price=1&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=&make=HONDA&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceASC&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2006&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=20000&cardist=367) makes up for it.
CPO Coupe for $18,595 (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=229602437&dealer_id=342902&car_year=2006&model=ACCORD&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&start_year=2006&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&only_price=1&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=&make=HONDA&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceASC&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2006&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=20000&cardist=542). That's about the cheapest CPO 6MT Coupe I've seen. How does a dealer IN NYC afford such a good price? It must be astronomically expensive for a dealer to operate in the city.
I've been tracking prices since last September and have seen a huge shift from the low $20k's down to under $19k. This seems to be a bit more than your average $2k/yr loss on an average used vehicle.
That NYC car was $20,995 on 9/20/07. Autotrader's AT-DFE32BC went from $18,450 on 11/29/07 to $16,990 today. AT-D53E098 was $21,000 on 9/18/07 and $18,000 today. And those are asking prices. Since the seller has been trying to sell them for 4 months I'm sure they'd be open to lower offers.
I'm guessing it is a combination of the '08 Accord rollout, a slowing economy and high gas prices. No matter what the reason, around $17k for a low-miles '06 6MT Coupe is pretty incredible!

No, I'll do that when I'm ready to buy. I don't think Honda would allow a dealer to specify a car as "Certified Pre-Owned" if it had a salvage title.
Also, the price isn't THAT out of line compared to other prices I've seen.
For example, this (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=228185003&dealer_id=606776&car_year=2006&num_records=100&model=ACCORD&systime=&make2=&start_year=2006&engine=6+Cylinder&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&certified=&body_code=2&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=used&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&make=HONDA&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&body_style=COUPE&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=2&sort_type=priceASC&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2007&transmission=Manual&doors=&max_price=&cardist=2037)isn't CPO, but it sure is cheap for an '06 6MT at $15,995. At that price I'd be more concerned that the title isn't clear. Unfortunately, California too far away.

ok then, i was just curious.
actually once i was shopping for 05 malibu with 20.000 or so miles. I remember seeing this one that was 1 to 2 grand below the average (canadian). I called them up and the car was still available at that price. next, i checked it in on carfax and it was a slavage. i remember thinking that there was really not that big a difference between a salvage and a GM Certified i ended up buying...

This beats the crap out of the CPO 2004 EX-V6 6MT I almost bought in September. With 21K miles, they wanted $20,995
Then there was the non-CPO 2004 EX-V6 6MT with 61K miles for $14,888. I offered $13,500, and the dealer wouldn't budge. Needless to say, they called me almost 3 months later asking if I was still in the market

Your most powerful weapons are time and the word "no".
My problem is that local prices are SO much higher ($3k to $5k higher) I can't imagine talking anyone down that far. And my wife REALLY doesn't like the idea of me going out of state to buy a car.
I'm still a few months away from starting to get serious. We'll see.

well i don't know if this helps.
i was browsing thru ebay for accord stuff one night and came across this 06-07 v6 6mt accord that was for sale for about 12000-14000. the main reason for such a price is bc the car was involved in an accident. BUT the dealer did fix and replace the screws and damaged parts including the deployed airbags so u wouldn't know unless they told u. i believe it's black-on-black. no navi but i'd go for it. screw the fact that it was in an accident. =)

Yea I saw one like that. You could see the dust on the steering wheel and the seam was more apparent. The one I saw admitted in the listing that the airbags had been deployed.
I agree that any used car should get checked out by a mechanic who would be able to find things like that.

It looks good in the pictures. But it has that HPF kit, whatever that is. I'll do a search.

Probaly HFP (Honda Factory Performance), it can mean shocks, springs, wheels, or body kits as part of the Honda OEM "racing" accessories.
CaptainVideo
02-01-2008, 05:43 PM
How can you tell which of the HFP parts are on the car? I'd definitely want stock springs and shocks but I'd prefer not to have to get out the tape measure to tell if they've been swapped out.
So, $15,900 sounds too good to be true. Can any of you sleuths here see any reasons why this one is a bad deal? I understand you can only be sure by test driving it and having a mechanic check it out.
Aviography
02-01-2008, 06:38 PM
Well, based on the pics, the wheels are stock (i.e. non HFP), the original owner may have taken the HFP wheels off and sold them separately to get most money out of them.
The wheelwell gaps between the fender lip and wheels "seem" to suggest the HFP suspensions are installed, I believe HFP shocks and springs come pre-assembled, so you would just swap the whole stock shocks/springs out, and unlike the wheels/tires, it's too much work to take them off to sell separately so that's likely why the original owner left them on the car.
Since there are front mud guards, the side body skirt aren't installed, and I "think" there is no front lip, and there is definitely no rear lip installed.
Seems to be a good deal, I paid almost $10K more for my 05' in July last year, but this is in Canadian market so the numbers are skewed, and the car was immaculate.
I would check for accident repairs, and the condition of the paint cannot be known until you looked at it up close and personal.
Also, there are those rice pedal covers installed, so it's hard to say if the original owner drove the car hard, or not...........
CaptainVideo
02-01-2008, 07:37 PM
I guess I'll have to study some photos to see what kind of clearance there is between the wheels and the fender lip.

That Cleveland '06 Coupe is down to $16,333! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBTOX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280202660270&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI) However, not only is it missing the shift knob (suggesting the previous owner was a punk kid who replaced the original;) it also has an aftermarket cold intake (suggesting the previous owner drove it hard and wanted that extra 1hp).
The '06 Sedan I mentioned at $16,800 is down to $15,000. (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=232477533&dealer_id=61365159&car_year=2006&model=ACCORD&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&start_year=2006&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&only_price=1&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=&make=HONDA&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceASC&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2006&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=20000&cardist=367)
$15,900 (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=238871246&dealer_id=100012080&car_year=2006&model=ACCORD&num_records=100&systime=&make2=&start_year=2006&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&only_price=1&awsp=false&search_type=used&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=&make=HONDA&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceASC&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2006&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=18000&cardist=397) in Atlanta.
Since I'm getting close to purchasing, I researched some of these dealers. Most of the REALLY low priced ones don't appear to have existed long, appear under different names or have lots of online and BBB complaints.
North Coast Auto Sales shows up with a different name (1st Gear Auto, Inc.) but is an actual member of the BBB with most complaints resolved. And $16,333 IS an amazing price!
Am I right to think this car isn't selling for a reason and that a missing shift knob combined with cold air intake indicates a car a 43 year old guy should avoid? Cleveland is a bit far away to just drop in and check the car out.
What would a replacement stock intake cost?

I live in Cleveland and have looked at some cars at North Coast Auto Sales. They deal in mostly higher line cars like Mercedes, Bmw's etc. From what I can tell most of the cars are in average condition and come from out of state auctions. They are a volume dealer and have a huge inventory. I've noticed lots of little defects on their cars like broken lights, mirrors, mismatched wheels plus what you've already mentioned on the Accord with the missing shifter. Some of these defects are on cars that orignally cost $100k plus that are only a year or two old. Just strikes me as odd.
Better yet would most likely be the Lexus dealer trade in. Most of their customers are luxury car buyers so they may be willing to let this car go for less than usual.

The dealers that are into "HIGH END" Used are cleaning up. They buy average to clean used and put real shiny tire dressing on them. Then sell to the people that have under 500 beacon scores. They don't car how good their Benz looks because they are so wrapped up with their status to care:lmao:until it breaks...then they cannot fix due to money.... then it gets repo'd and the cycle starts over.:dunno:..
I would "NEVER" buy a car without seeing. Air bag deployment is a major issue. Usually means Bumper,Hood, core support and possible fenders.
Certified = no more than 2 panels replaced. Bumper & Hood/Fender & Door etc. That's a Honda rule I believe.
The biggest issue I see with lease returns coming back is Refinish Quality.
Body repair shops really struggle to get one close to average.

I'm not quite ready, but this (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=236745270&dealer_id=57905325&model=&make3=&make2=HONDA&start_year=2003&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=6+Cylinder&certified=&fuel=&search_type=both&distance=100&model2=ACCORD&make=ACURA&color=&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceASC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&address=45429&advanced=y&end_year=2007&doors=&transmission=Manual&max_price=)looks like a pretty good deal. $20,184 CPO '06 6MT Coupe.
Does anyone have a feel on how much a Honda dealer is likely to budge on the asking price of a Certified Preowned car?
By the way, I went on a test drive of an '06 6MT Coupe and enjoyed it. Is it my imagination or is the '06 quite a bit quieter (road noise) than the earlier coupes?

That looks pretty clean.
I would say that car cost 16,800 to 17,600 depending on auction or lease return. 600 - 1K for processing and certification. So base cost 17,400-18,600.
If they sold it for 19K you would have a good deal.

Am I right to think this car isn't selling for a reason and that a missing shift knob combined with cold air intake indicates a car a 43 year old guy should avoid? Cleveland is a bit far away to just drop in and check the car out.
Think about what you just said. Other potential buyers also noticed that intake and missing shift knob. Furthermore, even MORE buyers probably thought it was a bit too far away for them to shop for a car. So in a way, you are answering your own questions. I'd steer clear too.
So much for resale value of 6mt accords. Not good news for us.
blah. You 6MT owners have been experiencing AMAZING resale value ever since 7th gen hit the market. A correction was to be expected once the 8th gen was released. Thankfully, the extra hit of depreciation wasn't too much of a difference. A more extreme example would be owners of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata. When that car was redesigned in 2005 (or 2006), it was like a total REINVENTION of the car. At that time, values of the older body style dropped by 30-40% (because the price of the new model was roughly the same)

Yea, you're right. I think it was wishful thinking on my part. If the car was in near-perfect shape, $16,333 would be a no-brainer.

Certified Preowned are still fairly high. There were two in New York between $17,500 and $18k a month ago. Nothing like that now.
If you are concerned about resale, check out the prices on used GMs and Fords! The deals they are making on new ones have really hit the used car prices hard. Too bad the Cavalier is such a piece of crap!

^^Agreed with everything said above. Certified pre-owned is always super high in price, and in my opinion isn't as necessary in a Honda as most go without issues all the way up to and beyond the miles of the extended warranty provided with them.
I'm just jealous, because only 5 months ago, I was looking for a V6 6MT SEDAN in the $17K range, and I couldn't find one for less than $21,000, as they were extremely rare on the used market. Today, of course there are plenty of them in the $17K-18K range.

But any changing technology will continue to get better. You have to pull the trigger at some point.
I noticed automatic EX-L's are cheaper than manuals, even though Edmunds' prices would indicate otherwise. That stinks! I suppose it is scarcity driving up the price.
I'd like to ask again if anyone can confirm the '06 is quieter than earlier models, or is it in my head. If it ISN'T in my head, I can save a lot of money getting an '05. I may post this question elsewhere, even though I know it is bad etiquette.

That '06 6MT Coupe in Cleveland is down to $15,995 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBTOX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280202660270&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI)
Same dealer has an '07 for $17,895.
And I finally found mine! I got a Red '06 6MT CPO coupe w/21k miles for $17,600, which seemed to be a good price (you guys can chime in if that's wrong). It is in nearly perfect shape (only one barely noticeable ding) and the interior is nearly flawless.
I've mentioned elsewhere that after driving it a few days I seem to have that infrequent 3rd gear problem that '03+ 6MT Hondas and Acuras get. There's a fix, though.
Thanks for all of your help! This car is incredibly impressive and a joy to drive.

It has been almost 3 weeks. I'd like to get a review in before the car is old hat.
Overall, I love the car. Well built and thoughtfully appointed. But I'm going to start with what I don't like.
The 5th and 6th Gen Accords had an almost Germanic personality. You sit in one and you feel like you are part of the car. Everything works right and provides useful feedback. Only Mazdas, VWs and BMWs are better, in my opinion.
The Gen 7 Accord stumbles in what makes it unique: V6 and 6 speed manual. They are each excellent pieces of machinery. The V6 is quiet and eager and surprisingly fuel efficient. The manual usually goes in gear well and the clutch is light. But I don't think they work well together.
It just doesn't feel right. You have to think too much about what you are doing. At random intervals, some gear (usually 3rd) may not want to engage. It takes a while to develop confidence in driving this car. Also, I think a 6-speed is one speed too many. You spend too much time shifting. The V6 has a wide enough powerband where a 5-speed would suffice.
Part of the problem is one of the car's strengths: It is amazingly quiet. Never does an unpleasant sound enter the cabin from the engine. But the lack of audible feedback contributes to that disconnected feeling. I suppose the drive by wire does, too. (Having said that, I drove a Pontiac G6 6Mt which had a similar disconnect, but it added an overly notchy shifter, low quality interior materials and a useless back seat)
After 3 weeks I'm figuring it all out. I still make a rough 1st to 2nd transition every now and then. And sometimes the short throws cause me to think I'm in 3rd gear when I'm not. But I want to drive it every chance I can.
That's because the car really is a very good piece of machinery. It far exceeds everything else I considered in its price range.
The Accord feels tightly buttoned-up with no squeaqs or rattles. Reliability should be good. My other Accord has 220k miles on it and it has never had a repair more major than an O2 sensor change. MPG is amazing given how I drive it (28Mpg average with about 75% highway). Nothing feels cheap.
Handling is wonderful. It is always sure footed in just about any every-day situation you could throw at it. The ride does get a bit punishing on bad roads, though.
The seat is adjustable enough to find the perfect spot. The leather feels like it is good quality. The stereo sounds fine and easily fills the cabin with distortion-free sound. The bass can be a bit on the boomy-side, though.
Controls are laid out logically, and gauges are very easy to read. The interior is refreshingly free of some of the worst fads. Except for the stupid, idiotic aluminum shifter knob. You couldn't design a worse human/machine interface if you tried. Ok, maybe if you added spikes and an electric shock. As it is, the shifter is FREEZING when cold and I'm sure it'll burn in the summer. Because METAL is a STUPID material to touch when extreme temperatures are involved. You want to MINIMIZE heat transfer, not maximize it! UGH!
More low-end torque would be nice, but there's enough power available at low RPMs. The higher RPMS give quite a rush! Get it over 3,000 RPM and you are rewarded with a push back in your seat as you are propelled smoothly and quietly.
The engine compartment looks nicely laid out, although I'm not sure where the spark plugs are.
There are any number of things I love about the car but probably don't discuss because it is an Accord! You expect it!
The wipers vary by speed, but not the radio volume? And where's the RDS for FM stations?
This car is a keeper. Some day I may want mufflers with a bit more of an exhaust note. And it would be nice to replace the cable shift linkage with something else. A practical and reliable car with a V6 and manual is rare and likely to become more rare with increased CAFE standards. Performance options will decrease to the point where you can only get it in cars designed to provide it, and little else (i.e. Mustang)
I'm glad I have mine!

See here (http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9606&highlight=shifter) for a link to rectify the aluminum shift-knob problem, the "boy-racer" factory shift knob will only go back on when I sell the car!
If the front end is in excellent condition without much stone chips/pits, then you might want to seriously consider springing some money for a professisonally applied clear bra protetive film to the front half of the hood, the front bumper, and the two side mirroe housings, I just washed the car last week after driving mostly highway through a tough winter with much salt and sand applied on the roads here, and surprisingly hardly any stone chips were notices, I attribute this to the clear protective film.
I also installed a PnP HID kit with greatly improved lighting.
These are the only three "mods" I've made, but it's the best money spent for this car!
I'll likely change the MT fluid to the GM fluid in another month too, the "bulking" into 3rd is annoying to say the least.........., even though it does not occur often.
As to your comment about the 6th gear is not needed, well, as you said the engine has sufficient torque even at lower RPM, so I like the 6th gear as it helps to improve fuel economy, and find it just fine at highway crusing speed to keep the rucus down by a few hundred RPMs.

Great review, CaptainVideo! So are you happy you picked the coupe over the sedan? Likes/dislikes of having the coupe?
You got a really good price on it too! I still have a tough time figuring out the logic of dealers in my area and how they come to the prices they do. For example, an '06 EXLV6 auto coupe for $22,900. On another lot owned by the same dealership, an '06 TSX with 19K for $20,800. The Honda dealership right near me just added a USED '07 EXLV6 coupe on their lot for the bargain price of $27,495.

Thanks!
There'll probably be an HID conversion some time in my future, too.
First, I'm considering the DiceElectronics' HD Dice (http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/HDHONDAR_HD_INTEGRATION_KIT_by_DICE_ELECTRONICS_HD _RADIO_and__p_9881.html).
Asking prices for cars don't seem to have much basis in reality. The higher the asking price, the more room they have to negotiate downward. Undoubtedly, some people DO pay the asking price. So there's no harm in them putting that high number out there.
I think the key is to wait and watch. If a car has been on the lot for 2 months or more you can be sure they want to get rid of it. Figure out an amount you are willing to offer (trade-in plus some profit), go in and negotiate up to that amount. Be unemotional and don't be afraid to walk away.
When given the choice of sending the car to auction or selling to that guy with the lowball price, they'll probably pick you.
These are all things I was preparing myself to do. It turns out my car was offered for a price I was willing to pay.
There's no buyer's remorse over having a coupe! That's largely due to the fact that I already have a minivan to haul the family in. Being a coupe makes the car a bit more unique. And it looks great, too! Thanks to everyone here who offered advice and gave me a heads up on some of the car's disadvantages.

Thanks for the review. You mentioned the 6th speed isn't really necessary. I kinda think that gas milege would suffer adversely if that 6th gear wasn't available.
The four cylinder 5 speed is lucky to get over 31mpg for me. 28 is superb for a V6.

I meant that that the gears should be spaced out wider so that 5th Gear would essentially be the same as 6th is today.
Gas mileage is part of the reason I chose the Accord V6. The Mazda6s 'fit' better, but the V6 didn't have much power and was much less efficient than the Accord's V6. Nissan & BMW want you to put premium unleaded in their 6-cylinders. Good luck finding any other makes with V6 and manual transmission!

If the gears are spaced out too much, you end up having to rev up the engine more before shifting. This will making acceleration a bit choppy if you don't want rev it up quite that high.

I've had the car for a month now and I'm liking it more and more as I get used to it. That's a good thing, because the first impressions weren't all positive. Brakes feel grabby and twitchy and shifting is clumsy.
In fact, I still stumble on occasion, but I've discovered it is totally due to lack of audible feedback on engine RPM. When I turn the stereo off, I drive nice and smoothly. But when it is on or someone is with me I get distracted and start messing up.
That, too, is diminishing over time.
I'd like to take this occasion to point out some of the other cars I had considered. Maybe someone else has the same dilemma and would benefit from my experience.
The car needed to have a manual, be fun to drive, comfortable, reliable and reasonably efficient. I'd be driving it almost 100 miles a day. Target price was $15k to $20k.
1) '06 Accord 6MT Coupe: Relatively inexpensive, relatively luxurious, relatively fuel efficient and unquestionably the most reliable (other than the TSX, I guess). Great warranty! Wins!
2) New Mazda3i: Fun to drive, surprisingly intuitive feel, but underpowered. Spend enough time in one and you'll be reminded on occasion that it IS an econobox. But it IS a highly impressive economy car. I read of complaints that the A/C was weak, which is a bit of a peeve of mine. And I've read LOTs of complaints about the 3s' MPG, confirmed by another friend who has one and never gets more than 28Mpg.
3) '06 VW Jetta 2.0T: Solid, powerful and fun! Like the Mazda3 and BMW everything felt right to me and I barely needed to think at all to drive it. Reliability and premium unleaded killed it for me.
4) '01/'02 BMW 328i/330i. This really was my favorite car. I immediately felt at home behind the wheel. It looks good. Rear wheel drive combined with great low end torque made the car feel fun and stable during quick acceleration. But, it would be the oldest car by far and I'm not at a point in my life where I want to be spending much time maintaining and/or repairing my car. Maybe for my NEXT car.
5) '04 Acura TSX: Feels more like traditional Accords, which was nice. But for a car that delivers 29Mpg highway on PREMIUM unleaded, it was FAR too underpowered. FAR too expensive, too. The Accord V6 is a much better value, in my opinion.
6) Mazda6: Fit well, but engine was unimpressive when compared to the Honda's. Poorer economy and less power. Didn't feel buttoned-together as tightly as the other cars, too. Questionable reliability. But a great-looking car!
Other cars:
2003 Maxima: Cheap and luxurious. I liked the Bose stereo. Amazing power and amazing torque steer! Too much wind noise on the highway, too jittery at highway speeds. Weird styling. Notchy/rubbery shifter.
Saab 9-3: Felt light, nice power (except for the Linear which I found crude & noisy) and drops fast in resale value. But, like the VW things just break. I have a friend with one and something always seems wrong. It has never left him stranded, though.
Civic Coupe: For a car that looks so cool, it was a disappointment. Very plasticy on the inside. The brake handle dug in to my right leg. Competent, but not all that fun. The Mazda3i was superior in every way other than MPG.
Civic SI: The definitive boy-racer with all the bad and good that comes with it. Unfortunately, the "bad" hits right where I don't want it. You only feel a big rush of power in a narrow 1k band at the top end. The engine is excessively noisy, and it isn't a good sound either. It wants Premium unleaded and doesn't deliver particularly good MPG numbers. Why not get an 'adult' car, like an Accord EX V6 6MT coupe? I did!
'06 Pontiac G6 GTP: A rare combination of V6 and manual in an American Car! I REALLY wanted to like this car. But the shifter was notchy, back seat completely useless, interior seemed cheap and MPG stunk. The Accord did everything better, except for low-end torque.
'06 VW Passat 2.0T: Felt amazingly solid and luxurious, but you have to jump several thousands of dollars to get one with a decent stereo and sunroof. Also, it shares the Jetta's reliability problems.
New Focus: Ugly, but nifty electronics. Mazda3 is more fun and feels better built.
Chevy Cobalt: Can't they do better than this? It isn't even all that cheap of a car and it fails miserably when compared to the Civic and Mazda3. I called it 'inoffensive'. At least it is better than the Cavalier it replaces.
I didn't even consider some other cars that might have seemed obvious: Like a Mustang or one of those boy racers like an RSX or Sentra SE-R. By the numbers, none are impressive. Boy racers typically don't get much better MPG than the Accord V6, and have significantly less power. And I appreciate the highway stability you get from a mid-sized car.
There you have it! After a month with an Accord EX V6 6MT Coupe there's no buyer's remorse and I'd do it all again. Yea, I wish it was easier to drive, but I know every other car on this list would have its own problems by now. And if I have this car 10 years from now (likely) I KNOW it will have aged better than any other car on this list.
