Hi all. I currently drive a 2005 Accord LX, w/manual transmission and stock tires. This is my first Honda, and I absolutely love it - best car I've ever had (and I've had a lot of cars in 30 years).

Anyway, with my previous 2 cars (a Chevy Cavalier and a Ford Explorer), in almost 10 years with the Cavalier I only had 1 flat tire, and in almost 14 years with the Explorer, only 2.

I've had the Accord just over 2.5 years, and I've had 4 flat tires.

Cheap tires or bad luck?

Strictly luck in my view.

Bad luck, but know that the OEM tires are very crappy.

When you change, buy something better!

As the owner of an expired Ford Explorer sitting in my driveway looking for a willing buyer, I'm tempted to say that tires don't fail when the vehicle is parked in the breakdown lane or up on the rack. . . .:D

Seriously, I would say four failures on the same vehicle is more than bad luck or living next to the guy who is embezzling from the tack factory. I'm assuming they were all OEM tires, which suggests a bad lot. I'm sure the manufacturer and American Honda would love to hear from you about how crappy these tires were and how it not only destroyed pride of ownership and put a serious crimp in your bank account, but also put you, your passengers, and potentially other vehicles at risk. They may, if you fuss and fume and say how you're a young guy with many tire-buying years ahead of you, etc., comp you with something. Also, if they are the original tires, or at least the same tire, I would go the NHTSA (Natl Hwy Trans Safety Admin) at www.nhtsa.dot.gov and see if your tires are the subject of complaints. If they were my tires, I would file a complaint with NHTSA.

If they are good business people at the tire manufacturer, and if you stick to the issue politely but firmly, I would think they would want an opportunity to regain your goodwill. They should also be smart enough to realize that there are probably ten others at least who had a similar problem but didn't bother to complain. (Can you say "Class Action Suit," boys and girls?) Instead, they just didn't buy that tire again.

There is one other possibility, in all seriousness. Have you changed your garaging habits with your Honda? Is it now in a garage, and the other vehicles were not? Do you work with power/bench tools, like grinders, sanders, saws, in the same garage with your Honda? Don't laugh, but the electric motors in these tools can generate enough ozone to weaken the sidewalls of your tires. (Ozone is a form of oxygen (O3) than is an even better oxidizer than your everyday oxygen (O2).) Generally, it takes a lot of work with the grinder or tool right next to the tire to have this effect, and tires do contain antiozonants, but I have heard of this happening.

The poster above is right - do not scrimp on tires when you replace them.

Its not the cheap tires, Honda is out there to get you. You need to give me your car before honda gets you!

My parents had a dodge minivan, came with goodyear tires of some sort. Every single tire picked up a nail over the first two years. Tires were eventually replaced and stopped picking up nails, it was driven over the same roads areas and commute.

You can get unlucky with nails. Friend told me the other day about a open truck that lost a load of nails on the interstate, cars with 3 or 4 flats all over. That would suck!! But I do think some tires are worse than other tires, may have something to do with tread patterns and softness of the rubber.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like my cheap, OEM tires are beginning to show some wear. I've been thinking about getting some rims to replace the OEM wheels (which are beginning to rust), so it's probably time to get new tires as well.

As I said earlier, I drive a 2005 Accord LX. It's a 4 cylinder with 5 speed manual. I just went over 60,000 miles. I have a 60-mile commute to work each day (90% highway), and live in southwest Ohio.

Any recommendations on tires?

I would suggest browsing around The TireRack for many options and professional reviews.
